Why do you think I write my own reviews?

I like it when people use the word "gay" in any context other than a homosexual one - it only proves that they have the maturity of a five year old, as if their obsession with shooters didn't already do a good job of pointing that out. It's also pretty amusing that he pointed out Skyrim considering the fact that, y'know, it's set in the bloody medival era and doesn't even have muskets, let alone generic modern firearms.

But just for fun, let's play around with his logic a bit.

game - gun = gay
game + gun = -gay
game + gun + Arem = ???

The only reviews I pay attention to these days are that of Bajo and Hex on Good Game and even their reviews are iffy in some areas.

Pretty much. Mostly because the two of them have so many goddam games to play though, including games in series they;ve never touched before which tend to be the most "iffy" ones. Hex tends to be pretty accurate. Bajo is as well, he's just a bit more... harsh sometimes.
Good Game

Hex: Yes, you've read the book, you've seen the film - now avoid the game like the plague lest your memory of Harry Potter's epic conclusion be tainted by what can only be described as a short, half-arsed cover-shooter that's boring beyond belief.

Bajo: ...It's shit.

Everyone needs to read this. I don't care if you're going to tl;dr, read it anyway:

That rings pretty true.

There are a few good points in there, but a lot of it is blatantly over-exaggerated. The most damning part about it is that he's essentially overgeneralizing the entire console community over a single special case, one in which literally only happens on one console in the market (PS3 in regards to mandatory installs - and even then, the alternative is lagging the entire game to hell by running it completely off the disk, which is a far less appealing option to a one-time install), and often isn't even as nasty as what he claims Resistance to be like (I can't remember the last time I needed a firmware update personally, but even then it takes anywhere from 30 seconds to 5 minutes, which really isn't massively inconveniencing either). Honestly, he could've summed the whole thing up as "fuck you EA/Activision/Gamestop", and I'm honestly surprised he didn't at the end of it all.

Day-one patches and DLC still sucks hard, though. Well, except maybe for the Genki pack for SR3, but that might just be because it contains quite possibly one of the most unspeakably awesome vehicles ever designed. Speaking of consoles becoming more like PCs, though, what the fuck ever happened to local multiplayer anyway? On one hand I can kinda understand where they're coming from because it's becoming increasingly difficult to maintain both a solid framerate and a decent amount of detail between 4 split screens (though if Reach can do it, fucked if I know why anyone else can't), but it really pisses me off these days that I can't just use a LAN instead and have to connect through a paid online service to play with another guy in the same room as me.

It's Jim Sterling, he tends to get overly dramatic sometimes, but a lot of what he said is pretty true. The majority of PS3 games have become mandatory installs now, as popping in the disc for the first time initialises the installation and, as far as I know, there's no way to play the game without complying. The phasing out of local multiplayer has become more apparent as of late; more and more games are just outright elimintating it from the equation completely and if they're not doing that, they're lumping in some really half assed shit to put people off of it anyway (see Goldeneye for the Wii, where it's so bad, you have to reconfigure any alterations to the controls you may have made EVERY. SINGLE. MATCH.).

EDIT: Here's something I didn't even know about:

http://www.forbes.com/sites/insertcoin/2011/06/13/the-day-dlc-went-too-far/

EA has gone around DICE, a company known for making their games as consumer friendly as possible, and employed all the worst tactics modern video game marketing has to offer. A level pack called Back to Karkand featuring some of the series’ classic maps is now part of a pre-order DLC pack called “Physical Warfare.” Further still, EA has removed specific guns and weapon attachments from the game and made them pre-order bonuses for certain stores.

All of this is an unfortunate move by the company, but one that’s still not unusual in the industry. However, in a genre that requires balance, EA has actually taken the unforgiveable step of giving some players access to game items that will actually give them a leg up on the competition, something Call of Duty hasn’t even dared to attempt yet. They’ve removed a powerful Light Machine Gun and two unique weapon attachments, making them only available through pre-order.

Also, this is pertinent:

These are the kinds of things that used to be rewards for skill. Beat the game and unlock the ability to play in the Batman Beyond costume. Find every Riddler Trophy and unlock Robin as a playable character. Goldeneye had you complete levels in a certain time, and that’s how you unlocked paintball mode. Now, you buy it. What do you get for achieving these difficult tasks instead? Useless achievement points or trophies, and if you’re lucky, maybe a new shirt for your avatar.

If you shift over to the world of casual games, cheats are even more of an overt form of currency. Games like Farmville or Mafia Wars literally tell you, if you give us money, we will make you richer and more powerful than anyone else playing. There’s an entire industry based on trading real world money for virtual world money, and regardless of the fact that money buys influence in nearly EVERY free to play game now, they still enjoy millions upon millions of players.

This is happening because it works. People will preorder for these bonuses now, people will pay to make their virtual farm bigger. And people will now pay to have paintball mode. Will the next Grand Theft Auto still have a “spawn attack helicopter” cheat code, or will I have to pay for that as well?

The anger phase of dealing with DLC has passed, and most are moving on to acceptance. One has to wonder however just how far the line can be pushed. How much can you cut out of a $60 title and tack on for a fee afterward? When does it stop? I don’t think we’ve reached that point yet, and I’m worried at what the industry will look like if this trend continues.

And on the subject of Batman:

This has gotten really ridiculous. Someone went and made this interesting piece:

Because it's actually gotten to that point of ludicrousness. Of course, the sheeple will still buy into it, because fighting the industry is totally out of the question when they try to screw you over like this. Such a shame people have gotten to the point where this is all okay and are taking it sitting down.

Yes, but it's just gotten ludicrous now; Getting Robin requires DLC, yet one of his costumes is unlockable through the game. LOGIC?

Some complete tool made a bid of $1725 for a copy of Modern Warfare 3, 4 days early. The kicker? The estimated shipping time for the purchase was 3-4 days. Words cannot express the sheer stupidity I just witnessed.

In a vaugely related story, a delivery truck in France got hijacked by masked men with tear gas, making off with 6000 copies of MW3, with a combined value of about half a million dollars.

Are people really that fucking crazy over a generic brown-and-bloom ironsight shooter? Also, quote relevant:

It's funny. I'm not even sure why people would pay for a CoD game at all.

Activision has at least three different studios dedicated exclusively to CoD games, so no, it's not really surprising they're trying to milk every last invididual cent of worth out of the franchise. It's the kind of short-sightedness that will inveitably end up backfiring and biting them in the ass eventually, and we all know Activision is long overdue for some karmic retribution.
