I support used games, just not GameStop.

GameStop does too much dirty shit to the gamers. Stealing free online passes, selling used games as new, overpricing physically old copies of a game at near launch-retal-price, selling tampered hardware...

Fuck Gamestop and it's sisters. Dirty whores. I'll deal with honest small chains and individuals where I can over them.
Agreed, especially since due to Gamestop's horrible practices, everyone else followed suit. It basically boiled down to Gamestop selling used (and sometimes new) games at ludicrous prices (pretty sure Marvel vs Capcom 2 is still going for 80 bucks used) and all the other stores like Best Buy were like "wait, we can charge people THIS MUCH?". And so, everyone started charging out of the ass for used and it probably brought too much attention to the market because developers saw that retailers were making WAAAAAAY too much of a profit off of it and wanted a piece of the pie.

I like it when people use the word "gay" in any context other than a homosexual one - it only proves that they have the maturity of a five year old, as if their obsession with shooters didn't already do a good job of pointing that out. It's also pretty amusing that he pointed out Skyrim considering the fact that, y'know, it's set in the bloody medival era and doesn't even have muskets, let alone generic modern firearms.

But just for fun, let's play around with his logic a bit.

game - gun = gay
game + gun = -gay

Because you're a smart shopper and the sad truth is, not a lot of people are. The biggest victims of Gamestop's malpractice are casual gamers and soccer moms because they don't know what they're getting themselves into and are easily duped by the system. This is mainly due to convenience because Gamestop is the most common and widely available videogames related retailer in the country, so naturally, seeing as everytime you trip over you'll run into a Gamestop, that's where people'd shop.

By the way, I did talk to the local GameStop in town regarding them opening up new copies and selling them as new. While this may not be the same at other GameStops, the one here does it do they can put out a display case, because it's too expensive to buy simple display cases, the giant display cases were you lock everything behind a Plexiglas sliding door, or buy the electric case things that Walmart has individually. While they do make money, stores are often too small to have those protective measures. So, they open up the cases, put the discs in a lock drawer, and when someone buys a game, they simply put the disc back in. This is typically done when there are no more unopened new copies of the game. I asked them that at the Gears of War 3 launch party, and then soon after when I saw the huge stack of Gears of War 3 standard copies sitting behind them, untouched.

Now this case does not apply to pre-orders, because they are not allowed to put up display cases until noon the day the game comes out.

It's not about simply doing that to protect against theft.

It when they do that AND don't give you the free content codes that sometimes come with games, or they put notably used copies of a game into it.

I've personally had both happen to me at the same time.

I don't think it's hard or very expensive to buy a bunch of empty DVD cases and print out cover art to put on display, so I don't see where that excuse is coming from. =/

Color printing in high quality is exceedingly expensive, Psycho. Do it as much as they need to, you're talking tens of thousands of dollars of ink per year, and that's not considering the possibility of investing in a high quality printer that won't discolor the print or smudge it, which a lot of lower end color printers tend to do. Add that up, you're getting closer to the hundreds of thousands.

Times are tough, Psycho. They'll cut back where they need it.

They'll only be printing one cover to place on an empty box and put it up on display as a way of saying "we have this game". The customer can inquire about the game by bringing the display copy to see if it's available, etc. I'm not really sure how costly it'll be considering we don't really get a library's worth of games every year. It doesn't even need to be high quality, just good enough to look like the actual game's cover so customers know that that's what they're buying. It's like those mock-up StarCraft: Ghost display cases they had for years, they could easily do something like that...if corporate took the time and effort to do so.

I do get that times are tough but they'd probably benefit more from this in the long run. They'd have less store theft, new games'll stay new because they're in storage and used games'll be kept in relatively good condition, without fear of someone running off with a game's box or something to that effect.

They tend to put up exactly how many games they have on the shelf, unless it's a new release where they have too many to shelf, hence the selling of unopened new games primarily.

And you may need to know something about professional advertising. Placing a tacky fake case with a not-so-great looking cover is considered very unprofessional, let alone it looks hideous. Sometimes you just need to actually look professional to please the eye. The price of professionalism being a fashion.

I rather they print out a poor copy of the cover art instead of that crappy drawing of kids running in the street that they put on most of the used games that came without a box. That image might just be a local thing here though...

Pft, around here, if something came without the box, they'd use those paper CD slip things.

Printing is expensive? You kidding?

This is the same company that ALREADY DOES THAT, except they print their own generic label that simply has the name of the game also printed on it. They certainly don't use glossy paper for it and it looks plenty fine.

And this simply isn't an in-my-area thing, as they do this in several states.

Even home colour-printing is expensive I don't know why the same wouldn't be true for higher quality printing in larger quantities

Printing in decent color without smudging, it is very expensive, and it builds fast.
