They got sold the Duke Nukem license, realized it was still getting used without their permission anyway whether through intention or ignorance, and rightfully took steps to correct that - I know I'd be pretty pissed off if I were in their shoes. If anyone, blame Apogee/3DRealms for being stupid enough to give them the IP to start with.

It doesn't make much sense for another company to just up and start making a new game out of the blue without permission, not even considering whether someone else owns the IP or not. The story was decent and it definitely poked quite a lot of fun at everything, including itself at times. MkII has a vastly improved gameplay system and a better, if anvilicious storyline regarding piracy, and Victory improves the formula even further to where it's actually reasonable. Plus the first two are being remade on the PSVita with the third game's battle system so they wouldn't be quite so grating on that front.

Oh, so now I learn about this, after only just buying mk2 a week ago. Man, my timing is terrible D: I still haven't gotten my hands on Victory yet. Didn't have the money for it when it came out and I haven't seen it anywhere since. All this aside, I found the first game to be enjoyable, but I wouldn't say its battle system is bad, just confusing as all fuck. Though I guess that's enough to call it a bad system.
