Are you serious? Are you suggesting that Nintendo should be responsible for advertising and PR for other publishers' products? Or are you claiming that EA didn't release Mass Effect 3 on the Wii U at full price, only to release the trilogy on other consoles, barring the Wii U a month or so later? Or how Square retailed Deus Ex at a much higher price on the Wii U, despite not having additional features? Or how Ubisoft, Warner Bros. and Netherrealm continue to halt support for the Wii U versions of their games? Or how publishers like EA released year old ports on the console and judged said console's viability based entirely on the sales of said ports? Because that's kinda ludicrous. I'll concede that a new developer should put their money where their mouth is and we'll just wait and see what kind of product they'll deliver. That aside though, everything they said is true, it has happened and the only real crime Nintendo has actually committed was the name they gave the console, confusing buyers initially. |

Going back to King and Candy Crush. It's a blatant ripoff of CandySwipe, which was released two years before Candy Crush. King's now attempting to get the creator of CandySwipe's trademark cancelled, simply because he had the gall to challenge King's trademark for their game being confusingly similar to his game. Not other publishers' but their own. Outside when I really dig into the gaming world and come here, I don't hear about the Wii U in of itself at all. I hear more about the 3DS in common conversation than I do the Wii U. Part of that has been compounded by the publishers' being dicks but the root cause is there hasn't been a big push to expand the install base. |

Doesn't help that NoA hasn't pulled out a decent fucking ad for the Wii U. Still, at least they've actually made an effort to try and sell the thing. Which is more than I can say for Nintendo's other branches. |

Between Nintendo Directs, new bundles and upcoming blockbuster first party titles, I think they've got a half decent handle on it. I haven't really seen much issue with them advertising their own games, it's just that people are too dense half the time to give something that isn't brown and grey a chance. Pretty sure Pikmin 3 and Wonderful 101 had some pretty decent backing most of the time. Advertising for games has become a dying art form anyway, what with magazines getting phased out and television being pretty much non-existent in favour of Netflix/Hulu/Amazon. |

Let me put it this way, if you're not a nintendo fanboy or friends with one, there is little knowledge of Nintendo Directs. Sure people see the bundles advertised in the daily circulars but that's it usually, as for Nintendo first parties, where is the advertising outside of Nintendo friendly zones? Pikmin 3 and Wonderful 101 had no backing here in America. Zero, Zilch, I keep forgetting they exist. Advertising is dying but it's still important, particularly Television. |

But it's not like other companies are really making much use of advertising either, that was my point. What you said about Nintendo goes the same for Microsoft and Sony, as I'm pretty sure people who weren't familiar with the franchises really knew anything about Killer Instinct or Knack. |

Well no, but why the fuck shouldn't they? Literally every other hardware maker does it in some form. Microsoft does it. Sony does it. Valve does it. Even fucking Apple does it, and their store is an unmoderated cesspool of shovelware and an absolute laughing stock to anyone that actually cares. At the very least they leave in a section for 3rd parties when their conferences came around, and many of them were even kind enough to give them stage demos - this is something Nintendo could really fucking learn from. Besides the fact it would otherwise leave them needing to pad it with stuff like, of all things, Wii fucking Party U, trust with 3rd parties is a two way street - they'll support you if you support them. Don't act like this is an isolated incident either, Nintendo's been treating them like shit since the N64 at least, and it shouldn't come as a surprise that it's coming back to bite them in the ass. Back to the point I was making, the root of the whole problem is that Nintendo can't even make their own console sell, and the root of that problem of that is that they're making virtually no effort to publicise the fucking thing. The Xbone has virtually nothing to even play on it right now, and the PS4 isn't faring that much better, but both of them outsold the WiiU's lifetime sales within their opening week. That's an entire year's head start completely squandered. Want to know how that happened? Because of this. I see this fucking ad wherever I go. And even I have to admit it's pretty awesome. Both Sony and Microsoft had an absolute blitz of marketing before their consoles were even out, and continue to do so long after necessary (even if some will argue the latter's tactics have an appalling lack of tact) to bait more and more people into buying it. And while neither really have much to warrant buying it for right now, this alone has basically ensured both of them as a viable platform for success without having to drop budgets to shovelware levels. What the fuck has Nintendo done lately? A bunch of short, generic infomercials that waste more time trying to explain it's not a Wii than anything else and doesn't even broadcast anywhere far? A series of Directs that are basically invisible to all but the relatively few dedicated fans on the internet still praying for something to justify a purchase? An E3 they more or less handed to Sony on a silver fucking platter by refusing to show up on stage at all? The games themselves literally could not be more irrellevant right now, as much as it fucking pains me to admit - this is all about money, plain and simple. The Wii has already proven that a bunch of zombie consumers will buy just about friggin' anything if it's on the console with the lion's share of the market, and developers will flock there once they learn they can not only make money from it, but also make a lot of money from it. If anything, when a publisher has to repeatedly cut extra content to save money and still fails to break even on WiiU, that just speaks further for the difficulties of actually doing anything on it as it stands right now.
![]() And whose fault is it when the WiiU can get the definitive versions of some games, and still sell like shit? This is literally not the slightest bit about the quality of the games themselves, because you already know there are enough EA zombies around to eat shit like this up everywhere else - this is about the fact there aren't even enough people in possession of the system to justify these ports to start with. And the blame for that rests indisputedly on Nintendo's shoulders. |

Alright, I'll concede to the first part; Nintendo needs to up their advertising game then. Seriously, why can't we just go back to the 90's, where we had these cool, EXTREEEEEEME ads for everything?
Technically, they've been treating them like shit since the NES, which resulted in them all pulling support come the N64, forcing Nintendo to readjust their relationship with them during the Gamecube era. You know what they say about how deep wounds heal. But, regarding the last bit of your argument, what good is releasing the definitive version of a game a year later, when everyone who wanted it already bought it? I mean, I'm personally not complaining, I have neither a PS3 nor a 360, so I really wanted a large bulk of the releases on those consoles to get the Wii U treatment but, let's be realistic here, without backing by the publishers themselves, those games will not sell on their own. They'd need to give buyers way more incentive than just having all the DLC on-disc, or what have you, for them to make a profit on year old ports. Fact of the matter is, the only people who bought those games were either die-hard fans, or people who never got the games in the first place, which are a small minority. The other issue is that, some of those games were NOT the definitive versions (LEGO Batman 2 did not come with any additional content from the standard release and the eShop has yet to feature any of the DLC) and Arkham City had a really bad bug that prevented people from replaying the Harley Quinn DLC, which Warner Bros. "rectified" by mailing people who complained replacement copies, after a lengthy process involving receipts and serial numbers. They didn't even have half a brain to release a patch, because they're clearly not interested in supporting the console more than the bare minimum. It's the reason why Injustice essentially had the plug pulled on it halfway through its lifecycle and why Arkham origins isn't getting any DLC. |

...right, I forgot NFS was an old port. My bad. The point I'm trying to make is that Nintendo fans (or apologists as the case may be) are failing to take into acount some of the bigger issues that are causing the WiiU to fall flat, and many of them aren't even related to the quality of the games themselves. I've made that point and you've acknowledged it, so I think I'm content now. |
