There's been a lot of reports of Nintendo's stocks dropping by 18%, Iwata publicly apologising and prompt responses from "analysts" that Nintendo should sell its IPs. Apparently, Nintendo's stocks levelled out by the end of the same day, and "analysts" seem to be conveniently failing to report that.

Aside from that, Iwata reiterates that there are no plans for Mario on smartphones.
In short "analysts" either should, or already have sold their souls to the iPhone market.

And are full of shit.

Bethesda was in the right, Notch was in the wrong.

Bethesda was rightfully defending their trademark, as if they didn't they'd lose it

and Notch was trying to trademark "scrolls" under too large of a sweeping context range.

 Sorry, I don't see it; how do you trademark a word you didn't create? That'd be like Nintendo suing a pizza place called Mario's Pizza. The worst part was that Scrolls didn't even resemble or play anything like any of Bethesda's games and it just seemed way too similar in concept to patent trolling.

"Elder Scrolls" is trademarked. I don't remember all of what the trademark includes exactly, but besides videogames I'm sure it includes promotional goods like shirts and mugs.

The trademark for "Scrolls" tried to cover damned-near fucking everything. Even if it were only in a scope of videogames, it's still a shitty move, as it would not only try to invalidate Bethesda's trademark, but any other active trademark with the word "scrolls" in it, and prevent others from using that word in their trademarks of the same scope.

If you do not defend your trademark, you can lose it and the protections it provides. The legal team at Bethesda was doing their job. If they had not acted and let Notch get away with his trademark anyone could have sold product under the Elder Scrolls name without consequence, which can not only fuck a company over on lost sales, but also fuck up the share values.

Yes, there are trademark trolls. However, Bethesda certainly was not acting as one.

 Okay, that makes more sense and you should've said it before, godammit. From what I remember, it SEEMED like basically Notch was just trying to make a game called Scrolls and Bethesda came bashing down the door because of name similarity.

 Because no one wants to admit that some indie devs can actually be stupid fucknuggets/complete fucking assholes (AKA like Phil Fish)? I dunno.

IN OTHER NEWS (or rather, not much different news because fuck the big wigs): Happy Wars, Microsoft's "free to play" game on Xbox Live Arcade, is now "free to play" for non-Golds. Why am I air quoting free to play? Because it's not fucking free to play. You still need to be a Gold to actually be able to do fucking anything in the game.

Apparently Microsoft did the same for World of Tanks: Xbox 360 Edition. Naturally, the CEO of Wargaming.net is fucking pissed about it.
