The Xbox Division is essentially on its own already.
I meant more in the sense of them just selling it to someone else, because they clearly have no clue what they're doing anymore.

That wouldn't really change. The Xbox unit has to answer to Redmond but they're still extremely autonomous and wouldn't want that to change.

Microsoft really needs to be focusing on making Windows not shit anymore anyways, in my eyes. For the life of me I can't conceive of a single fucking thing they've added since XP that's actually benefitted or been necessitated in their later OSs, and these days they're pointless RAM hogs on top of it.

Shaq Fu may actually be getting a sequel, according to Shaq himself.

I say "may" because there's still some ambiguity about whether he's joking or not.

In fact persistent rumours suggest that Microsoft is considering spinning off or even selling its Xbox business, although again that seems to be more investor wishful-thinking than a result of anything Microsoft has ever said.

I did post somewhere around here that one of the potential new bosses (who was Nokia's boss until MS bought it out) for Microsoft wants to get rid of the less profitable products. That primarily being Bing and Xbox. But there's really not much said about that guy, so I'm not sure if he actually said that.

All things aside, that guy is probably the guy I most want to see leading MS in the future. If only because of the possibility he'll stop Office products costing so damn fucking much. But that's off topic.

A desolate place, without any trace
It's only the cold wind I feel
It's me that I spite, as I stand up and fight
The only thing I know for real
There will be bloodshed!

The 8th generation will be just as bad, or worse than the 7th generation. It's a decent write up of everything currently wrong with the industry, but it's a little narrow minded, especially with his last paragraph:

Quote:

Those who started gaming this generation will probably disagree with the things I’ve stated. That’s understandable because you don’t know better, but old school gamers come from a time where everything was better and cheaper.

It's a little more than condescending to tell someone that they don't know better and it's incredibly ignorant to say that everything back in the day was better and cheaper. This guy clearly hasn't played a mass bulk of the garbage that used to come out on 8-Bit consoles and probably had no idea how much his parents were spending on his favourite hobby considering NOTHING was cheaper than today.

Why pay to play online? Why pay for something that should be free and used to be free?
Because believe it or not, servers cost money to run, and a server network the scale of any of the big three right now costs an absolutely ridiculous fuckton of money to run. Is that really so hard to comprehend? Free online is an act of generosity most companies can only afford if they play their cards right and have other streams of revenue to accomodate their costs, so this really should not come as a surprise.

What IS outrageous is that a service like Xbox Live is polluted with front-page ads that actually do constitute an alternate stream of revenue, only to charge consumers money for the service anyway.

They want your first reaction to be: ‘Oh WOW…this game is gorgeous. Here take my money!’ And that’s how it is these days, developers are selling you graphics instead of gameplay.
What's especially appaling about this is that game companies have somehow completely corrupted even what it means to be a good looking game. Whenever there's talk of graphics these days it's always talk of 1080p and texture resolutions and polygon counts and shaders, which is really just technical buzzwords and mumbo jumbo built to disguise the fact that their palletes are just a step shy of under-saturated monochrome over-layered with bloom effects that somehow always manage to be applied in the absolute worst, hap-hazard arrangements managable. Monster Hunter 3, for all the qualifications of looking like a goddamned PS2 game by those standards, has at least one view worthy of a postcard in literally every single area of the entire fucking game, because they remembered to actually look appealing to the human fucking eye.

And that's not even the only example of a gorgeous game without relying on what's called 'graphical quality' these days. Games like Muramasa the Demon Blades utilizes a 2-D sprite style that looks less like sprites and more like someone took the time to animate a painting and worked from there. Nearly every location in the game is wonderful to look at, and the characters move with such fluidity that you'd never guess they were sprites. I don't even need to mention the way food was done in that game either, as it could literally make you hungry just by looking at it.

Then you have games like Super Mario 3D World, where it's still cartoony but it's bright, cheery, and the devs can still do an immense amount to make it visually appealing without resorting to CoD brown. I don't have much time to post, but really, there's so many examples of how butchered the idea of graphics are and how they should be done that you only have to take five steps to walk into one.

The one savior of gaming I can see is PC indie gaming. Third party devs are continuously playing "follow the leader" with the big money maker, CoD, while indie games, free of oversight from corporations that hire suits that likely never played a game after Pac-Man (on the Atari), can pursue ideas Big Gaming are too chickenshit to pursue, like Starbound, Cryamore, Skullgirls (post Cokenami), and Mighty No.9.

...and, of course, Steam.

It took me a long ass while, but I'm coming around: aside from Nintendo, PC gaming is the future.

Perhaps I could be reading this wrong, but it seems bizarre to chastise developers for following the examples of others, and then to cite in opposition to them... a steampunk Zelda, a game based off of a 2D Minecraft clone, a fighting game reportedly inspired by Melty Blood, and a Megaman game in everything but name. Is it possible your issues with this approach are influenced by some kind of bias, or that the bigger problem is the amount of money larger companies stake on essentially re-making games from other companies people have already bought and played?

That being said:

This if nothing else is something that rings unfortunately true about the state of the industry - that executives are only barely involved in the actual development process of their games, and don't have the skills to empathise with them. Gabe Newell got where he is because he's a programmer, as did the likes of Miyamoto and co. They understand firsthand what it means to make a game, the limitations of the people making one, and how astonishingly crushing it is to have all creative freedom taken from them in the interests of, as Jim Sterling would often loathsomely quote, "appealing to a wider audience".

What the heck did people like Steve Ballmer do in that same light? He was a business manager. That's right, they put a man who only knew money in charge of the creative decisions of others. And that's fucking sad.

I think Kei's issue comes from the fact the big money developers aren't even changing their games' roadmap even though they have the dongs worth of money to do so much more.
