The Winds of Change

Saint Lucca is a small town in eastern Massachusetts, where everyone knows their neighbors by name, where the scattered traffic lights wink ceaselessly in a warming orange glow, where florid drunkards stumbling from the sole bar on the far side of Main Street are the worst of the riff-raff to populate the jailhouse. Of course, fifty years ago, the town had a mighty hustle and bustle: The worn-out husks of textile mills and industrial parks line Oldtown's silent streets, the desolate blocks somber and heavy with the stains of graffiti and rainfall, the faces of buildings sunken with age. Now, the only signs of life within the skeleton of Saint Lucca's industry exists within the iron-bar joints of the industrial park on Abbott's Row. Independent businesses are as short-lived as the mayfly there, leases trading hands as an almost everyday occurrence. You live here in Saint Lucca. You might be a troubled teenager grinding your way through junior year, working minimum wage at the local pharmacy for a scrap of change. You may have worked at the steel foundry for the last twenty years, the only stable career in town since it hasn't moved from the little shack on Main even after everyone else packed up shop. You could even be one of the drunkards who has lived here all your life, finding the only solace in your life a bit of ale to imbibe and some painkillers to choke down. Not much really changes in town. Businesses come and go. People are born in the hospital a half hour out, get baptized on the church at the peak of town, and get buried in the cemetery down the hill. Road trippers barrel on through and never stop for a second glance, a mere shortcut for them, a lifetime decaying in sepia for the locals. But what if something did change? Would the world stop for the briefest moment as Saint Lucca heaved its chest with the taste of one fresh breath curling across its lips, or would it all be choked down in the monotony of daily life? If someone could photograph the occasion, would they take the time out their life of slothfulness? If a new face showed up in the crowd who would be the first to take note, and who would be the first to take initiative? Sometimes, it pays to ignore the small details, and sometimes it pays to be vigil. If your life changed dramatically, if everyone and everything you knew was just a speck on your horizon, if nothing could ever be taken for granted in the world- would you stay vigil? In Hunter: The Vigil, you were a normal person once. Or, to be more exact, you still are- you're just changed by the things you've seen. Perhaps you've had a near-death experience, perhaps you're haunted by surreal and vivid dreams, or maybe your imagination is far more inviting than most people. No matter the case, your life has always been a little different than most others, but you have never let this change your way of life. You still go to school or labor at a job with as much gratification that comes with it, you still make friends like everyone else, and the greatest tragedy to ever cross your life was likely a death in the family. One day, this is not the case. One day, you will enter a world of the paranormal, one you will never be able to escape. You might be able to withdraw into the confines of your own mind, but never will what you see escape you. You have the choice of being a recluse or chasing down what supernatural beings may exist to terrorize you in your sleep, but you will never have the choice of living a normal life. This isn't a story about how you saved civilization from destruction, nor is this a tale spun tight around your heroics. This is the nitty-gritty, your life on the edge of your seat. This is a battle of survival, a war against the darkness that threatens to consume humanity- yours and everyone else's. You will fight to protect, you will fight to preserve, and you will fight to conceal, but you will never earn the recognition you deserve. But we're rushing ahead of things. You are not a candle amidst the night...yet. Your story starts before the beginning, a prologue as you will. This is Day Zero. Welcome to your last day before the fleece gets snipped from your sight. You don't need to know how to play the game in order to play the part of a Hunter. You just need to know what it feels like to be a human being. The only thing you need to know is what I need to know. I need you to tell me: -Who are you? What is your name, how old are you, and how would you describe yourself? -What are you? What do you do for a living, and what does everyone else think of you? -Why are you? What are your skills, and how did you come across them? Who are your family, and how important are they to you? -How are you? Do you have the mental strength to handle your last moments spent in ignorance? Do you have the physical prowess to handle any creature, man or beast, that dares to threaten you? Do you have the social charm and wit to get the information you need from the people that matter most to combat the coming darkness? We already know where and when you are. This is your last day of ignorance in Saint Lucca, where you live. The rest is determined by you. This is a Play-by-Post (PbP) game, which means that it operates mostly like a free-form RP with extra rules. The setting of this game is modern day, in an environment rife with supernatural horrors that nobody else dares speak of. A copy of Hunter: The Vigil may be used, but otherwise isn't completely required to play this game. I will put up a link to resources such as the book and character sheets when the time is right, but otherwise I just want to get the main setting out of the way, check who is interested, and get an idea on who is willing to kick some ass. I'm not sure when or if I'll get my D&D game running, so I figured that this might be a good introduction to tabletop gaming for people (even if it is PbP). If anyone wants a copy of HtV pronto, 4chan's Rapidshare depository has at least three copies from what I saw. |

I'm in. Oh, and I guess I'll join the RP too. Anyway, I plan on being a school teacher. I'll list more as I flesh the character out more. |

Dexterity 2 + Firearms 3 + Handgun Specialty 1 + Glock Accuracy 2 = 8 dice (8d10.hitsopen(7, 10)=5) Did I mention that I rock the dice rolls? |

Sup, I want to play a social outcast in highschool who has a part time job as a pizza delivery boy. His name's Jason Wilcock, everyone hates him, he's full of rage and angst and spends more time shooting his mouth off than anything. He's pretty street smart as well as intelligent, but the latter doesn't show considering he'd rather sleep through classes than get any work done. He's also the only child in the family. Err, that's really all there is to it, anything I need to add? |

Parents would be a nice touch. What the father does, what the mother does, and so on. One thing to know, Jason Wilcock, is that, as much as they wouldn't like to admit so, mostly every teenager in this town is a social outcast in one way or another. You see, cliques aren't based around social groups such as geeks and goths and jocks, but more around how long each person has known everyone else in town. The school's structure is of an odd heirarchy, and it's not much of a surprise that most of the student body, upon hitting high school, have thought of (or have done so) transferring to the vocational school in the next town over. Better to learn a trade than to live a life of wasted opportunity, which is one way to describe town. |

Hmm, so in order to have my guy be the typical model of a highschool outcast, he'd have to be from out of town? Also, I was thinking of having his dad be this dickish business guy, but I can't really think of anything, any ideas? |

Well, I'm just saying that your character must really stand out if the standard clique isn't even accepting of him. As for dickish business guy....hmm, I might have one solution to that, but you'll have to trust me with the details. The only question I have to ask is: Does he commute often? |
