Apparently not. It's been bombing on most of the reviews here.

I like it when people use the word "gay" in any context other than a homosexual one - it only proves that they have the maturity of a five year old, as if their obsession with shooters didn't already do a good job of pointing that out. It's also pretty amusing that he pointed out Skyrim considering the fact that, y'know, it's set in the bloody medival era and doesn't even have muskets, let alone generic modern firearms.

But just for fun, let's play around with his logic a bit.

game - gun = gay
game + gun = -gay
game + gun + Arem = ???

Forget the reviews, I wouldn't expect anything less from them. I think the only people who'd appreciate the DOUK are fans of the DOUK or what the DOUK represents. I'm not going to bother giving "journalists" or generic morons who play nothing but CoD the benefit of the doubt.

I figured, so I actually asked someone over Xbox Live who was playing it while I was committing alien genocide on Reach. He apparently loves it, but I do declare, I have never heard someone swear so much at something they love...well, actually I have, but not to a game.

Sorry, PW, but the game totally blows.

This is a play through of the first level that shows as much.

Good god, this show is ridiculously boring and slow. I'm sorry, I couldn't sit through more than the first three videos (as well as that "disclaimer" at the end) and in all honesty, the game looks fine. Do you mind outlining what exactly they thought was wrong with it later, because they were having fun at the begining and I can't understand how the game could go downhill from there.

I think people's standards have shot through the roof and everyone expected way too much. He's sitting here talking about how bad it is being 17 hours long...I'm sorry but, that's fucking awesome for a first person shooter. He's also talking about "the Gearbox brand" like it was a commodity; they've only ever made one game before and it was mediocre at best. Also, saying that it just looked like a PS1 game with good graphics is a pretty weak argument, I'd say it was AT LEAST on par with Half Life 2. What exactly were you expecting from a title that was wrenched from the previous developer and polished up? I know I shouldn't JUST be thankful for getting the product and settling for less but come on man, it's not that bad.

Nobody told people to expect a masterpiece of gaming. Yes, it may have been overhyped, overadvertised and overdone, but that only goes hand in hand with the legend this game has made for itself within the past 12 years. The problem is that people took this way too seriously, like it was the second coming instead of just taking it at face value and enjoying a fun, mindless and obscene FPS.

Yeah, I'm just going to shut my ears and go LALALALA whenever I hear people talk bad about this game until I play it myself. This is exactly like the people who swore off Deus Ex because it has in-game advertising, or the ones who bashed Ocarina of Time 3D because it's wasting money on "another rehash", or even people who said 60 bucks wasn't a legitimate price for a fighting game with regards to Mortal Kombat. Gamers today just can't appreciate anything anymore without being overly critical and cynical.

To be fair, if you had watched more than a bit of it, you'd see why they were only excited in the beginning. (I ended up sitting through all of it)

There's a reason why the show was ridiculously slow and boring. The game is ridiculously slow and boring.

I have played the game meself, and I can tell you this - the parts where it's a shooter is just ok at best, and lackluster at worst. Every other part of the game is just horrible. It handles like shit, and in a car it's even worse.

It also is incredibly un-funny. Duke's jokes are simply ripped wholesale from movies and stripped from their context. It's not parodying action movies, it's wanting desperately to be one. I can tell you that I did not laugh once while playing it. There is a point where you find the women from earth, and they're being raped. It's not played for laughs. It's not treated as ridiculous, or so over the top it can't be serious. It's straight up rape, and then when Duke makes the required "your fucked" joke, it's not funny, he just comes off as an asshole.

Honestly, Gearbox should be faulted for trying to pass this off as a completed game. What they really should have done was taken the name, and built a whole new game from the ground up, and released that. By simply polishing the horrible game that the old studio created, they lower their own name, and the name of Duke. Also, don't try to convince yourself this game isn't ugly, it is. Don't convince yourself with the "it's 16 years old, what did you expect?" rhetoric. It honestly would have been much better if the game never seen release. This game is not worth the hype, and it is not worth 60 bucks.

Trust me here PW, you really should avoid it.

From what I saw, they played it slow and boring. Dude, it took them like 2 minutes to figure out what "LMB" means...who DOESN'T know that? They kept lollygagging and at some points I seriously wondered if they've ever played a game in their life before.

But anyway, some of that does sound pretty bad. I still want to give the game a go for myself before bashing it over the head.

EDIT: I am watching videos of this game and I am still finding absolutely nothing wrong with it. I don't want to just flat out spoil the entire game for myself, but really, with the way people are treating it, it's getting to the point where I have to see an entire playthrough of the whole game.

Duke's jokes are simply ripped wholesale from movies and stripped from their context.
In other words, the same standard that's been there since DN3D?

To be honest, I actually got quite a kick out of
Spoiler: click to toggle

About the worst I can say about the game so far is that the bosses really fucking suck, and that bloody RC car is the spawn of Satan (though the lifesize one ain't quite as bad for what it's worth). I haven't found anything especially offensive besides that, but for a game that only lets you carry two guns I can't help but feel ammo is way too restrictive on some of them (if I had a choice between a single-shot RPG with only 5 shots, or a Devastator with sixty nine, I know which one I'd choose).

Yet to try multiplayer, but I'm hearing it's all-round more enjoyable than the singleplayer, which doesn't particularly surprise me. I guess the strict ammo limits make more sense there, among things.

In all honesty trying to imitate Call of Duty (again) was probably stupid. When will FPSes go back to having a minimum 10 gun limit, along with a proper health system and NO iron sights? Seriously, can we just, stop doing that altogether?

Again, I'm still watching vids of this and thinking there's not much difference from Duke3D and that's pretty awesome. I hear multiplayer's not as good actually because it just basically turns into a clusterfuck of who can get their hands on the Devastator first.

Oh for the love of...

You know, it's nice and all that Duke's getting more exposure at the moment, but for christ's sake I wish everyone would lay off the remake bandwagon for a while. Or hell, just the nostaliga train in general, really. It just pisses me off to no end that some people are apparently so strapped for ideas that they have to make a quick buck off past games instead of making any attempt to blow them out of the water. I honestly don't know of any other industry that lets people get away with this shit like us gamers have.

Speaking of Duke exposure, I wonder what happened to that DS trilogy that was in the pipeline not long before 3D Realms kicked the bucket.

There was a game that was released on the DS a few days before Forever came out. No clue what it's all about though.

I never played the old games... I thought the demo for this wasn't the worst thing I've played. Not great, but not terrible.

There's no point seeing as there's a high-res pack available for download which significantly updates the look of the game to make it look like it came out...oh, about two or three years after it actually did. I don't know just how much developers think they can pimp the original game out though.

What they should do is try remaking the first two Duke games with updated sprites (maybe make it 2.5D) and connect/retcon the backstories with the newer games properly.
