Anyone who's dumb enough to watch the endings now really has absolutely no interest in gaming whatsoever.

If you'll also recall, Shang Tsung had access to quite a few more abilities with each youthful incarnation of himself. Of course, that's probably due to gameplay design and mechanics being upgraded with each new entry, but it could be interesting if they shoehorned that into the plot.
