Not necessarily plot-necessary, but kind of a little diversion. Hell, I even had a layout for a Sonic RPG of a much bigger scale that Chronicles had, but with more variety in free-roaming and bonus levels that incorporated the individual play styles of select characters (Sonic = speed, Knuckles = power, Tails = flight x machinery, Rouge = stealth, etc.)

The rumour comes from Wentos, whose entire credibility comes from his prediction of one game consisting of a bunch of educated guesses literally any old sod could have made. And even then he was completely wrong about a fair few things he'd originally mentioned, like Shadow and Knuckles being playable characters, or Eggman turning into a fucking walrus. No seriously, he actually said that. Sadly, 4chan seems to think he's credible based off that one lucky guess (in spite of all the other stuff he's done since that turned out to be completely wrong) and ridicules all logic and reason to the contrary. Do yourself a favour and just wait for E3. EDIT: Even worse still, an impromptu post in the SSMB equivalent thread reveals even the original prediction was fake: FakeHedgehog There was a thread on /v/, shortly after the original thread that started all of this, that explained exactly how the entire rumor is fake (created by /v/ tripuser Ben Spurr), and someone edited the HTML (instead of Photoshop, makes it look more legit) on one of Ben Spurr/Wentos/Wintos' posts. They changed the message to closely describe Sonic Generations, screencapped that, and posted it to make it look like it came from 2011 (even with an earlier post number) a few months before the Generations announcement. Now all the news blogs are citing that as the reason why this leak could be legit, since it's coming from the guy that was right about Sonic Generations, after all. To clarify about the tripcode: You can have whatever name you want in the name field, but the tripcode is more like the actual username. The tripcode matches with Ben Spurr's, so it was Ben Spurr, NOT the original Wentos at all. Sonic Sonicstream. Sonic Goes Out And Does Things. The posting sounded very convincing. Most of us are excited to be able to play as other characters, and I can't see Sonic Team changing up the Unleashed style of gameplay very much (even though I can't stand the idea of Knuckles being able to Boost). Story also sounds on par with recent offerings too, so not sure if troll or not. Ah well, they want our money eventually so I'm sure we'll hear some real news soon.

Unless one of the Gamecube or other Sega Collections (don't have them, but I do own Sonic Jam) on consoles has it you're correct about Sonic Jam. Spindash in Sonic 1 is appealing for a little bit, unless you play Sonic 1 alot then the spindash is going to change the way you'll play the game.
