It's not bad. My only complaint is that Sonic's voice sounds a bit too deep, but I'm sure I'll get used to it as time goes on. Tails's voice, though, is perfect. :)

lol at IGN's still retarded scoring system. Let's praise the game for an hour, then give it a 7.5. It really sounded to me like he wanted to give it a 9, but we all know how these people work.

Also, what happened to this just being a port of the first game with just some thrown on K'nex controls? Godammit, now I have to miss out.

Yeah, we know IGN are bastards like that, but a 7.5 still, that must mean something.

I like it when people use the word "gay" in any context other than a homosexual one - it only proves that they have the maturity of a five year old, as if their obsession with shooters didn't already do a good job of pointing that out. It's also pretty amusing that he pointed out Skyrim considering the fact that, y'know, it's set in the bloody medival era and doesn't even have muskets, let alone generic modern firearms.

But just for fun, let's play around with his logic a bit.

game - gun = gay
game + gun = -gay
game + gun + Arem = ???

It means Sega and/or Microsoft paid a pretty penny to not have this game bashed. ;)

Recently, I've actually come to like IGN and I honestly don't see anything wrong with this article. Sonic Riders wasn't an amazing game and the article said "Sonic Free Riders is, ultimately, a fairly standard racer that works well for Kinect", which was the point of the review. Maybe it's just that I've come to learn what they mean and how they say things but that was not praise... For the most part, the article was just telling you what to expect with some small praise on what works.

Perhaps look at their other 9+ reviews and compare the content, then maybe you'll see what I'm saying. I honestly don't see anyone giving a 9 for this game, let alone any Kinect game, at least not for a long time.
Good Game

Hex: Yes, you've read the book, you've seen the film - now avoid the game like the plague lest your memory of Harry Potter's epic conclusion be tainted by what can only be described as a short, half-arsed cover-shooter that's boring beyond belief.

Bajo: ...It's shit.

That was never actually the case. When we got wind of it on SoaH, the source link AKA TSSZ made an assumption that it was a port of the first game with no evidence whatsoever, aside from the fact that Free Riders was rumoured to be an XBLA title.

Looks like Kotaku doesn't agree.

I'm just going to say what I've been saying about Kinect from the begining; I don't see it working at all. There's no way a motion capture system so...simplistic, for lack of better word, would be accurate enough to simulate real life movement to the extent needed for you to enjoy a videogame, especially one that would require a lot of complex (for the device) motions, like Sonic Riders (best example would be moving your hand out to pick up powerups). It will ultimately fail before heading out the door, because there is too much that can and will go wrong with it. Motion control may have grown out of infancy and into childhood, but the idea behind the basis of Kinect is way too advanced for such a young technology. Nintendo knew exactly what it was doing when it entered the market, and has been taking it slow enough (Wii Motion, Wii Motion +, Balance Board), with small steps before the probable boom into full blown motion sensitive controls. Sony had the right idea by imitating them with Move, as really, I think Kinect will ultimately end up being as bad an idea as iSmell was a decade ago.

Also, if Kotaku's right, then Keiji's post above probably has a lot more going for it than one would initially think. Either that or IGN still doesn't know jack about videogames.

You know what they say? You can't spell ignorant without an "ant".

...owait

Also, Sega didn't pay Kotaku no money, so Kotaku didn't give Free Riders any props. Have we learned nothing from the Gamespot/Kan & Lynch debacle? :3

Also also, IGN trashed Ken's Rage, so Psy's right, IGN is still balls.

My guess about the huge gap in review scores is setups.

IGN and Gamespot and whatnot have enough money to set up Kinect in a huge, empty room where it works best. Therefore, they probably get their controls working perfectly. Kotaku is a blog, so their reviewers play games in their own living rooms, which are often small. Their controls simply can't respond as well.

Unless you've got a giant, empty, white room to play xbox in, it's probably better to err on the side of the blogs for Kinect reviews.

Except even IGN admitted to the controls not being as fantastic as one would think, they just didn't do so in so many words like Kotaku did.

Indeed, and that's because they had an optimal Kinect set-up.

Kinect very well may have been everything it was supposed to be had they not had to consider costs. They themselves said the camera uses only a single digit percentage of the Xenon CPU, cut down from 10-15 which was a cut back already from having the microprocessor. Had the microprocessor been retained, we may have very well had the next big thing in gaming but with these returned Eyetoy issues and a delay making itself quite evident in just the basic, family oriented games that are coming out with it, Kinect just doesn't seem like it will actually pay off... It really seems like they should have waited either for the technology to make the microprocessor affordable or just waited for the next generation to add the necessary capabilities to the console itself.

You guys are talking like you know exactly what Kotaku's setup looked like, or even what IGN's looked like. I didn't really see any shots of either reviewer working their magic on the game.

It's no surprise that Microsoft would cut costs either, because that's the sole reason the 360 has had (and still has) hardware problems, including, but not limited to, the RRoD. Like I said above, they saw how the Wii was dominating the market with motion technology, so they tried to one up them at whatever cost instead of thinking sensibly. When they realised that that cost was too much for them to handle, they cut corners and released a half baked product, much like what Sony did with the PSP.

We get glimpses inside of Kotaku writers apartments all the time; those guys love to write about their own lives. Their living quarters are very average. Back when Rock Band came out, they emphasized the difficulty of storing all those plastic instruments with shots of some of their gaming setups. They were nicely sized for sitting down, but could hardly fit a Rock Band kit, let alone Kinect.

I am making assumptions about IGN, but really, why wouldn't they optimize their Kinect setup? They are professional reviewers, it's their job to play games the way they were meant to be played.
