Maybe it was just me, or maybe it was just because I developed a sick, masochistic streak while trying to beat the Planet Wisp Act 1 Doppelganger mission, but I actually started to find that level fun. The fact that I stumbled on the discovery that Pink Spikes could in fact spindash once after it comes in contact with a surface certainly helps, as well as that well-timed spindash+jump combos could clear entire sections in one go. (For the record, I beat that missions S-Rank by almost a full minute once I got a good run in.) Act 2, however, can go fuck itself. On a side note, upon starting my hunt for Red Star Rings, or rather after I gathered five from one level, I discovered that this is another way to get new abilities for each Sonic. Getting all five in Chemical Plant Zone Act 1 nets you the Breath Holder ability, which lets you stay underwater longer before needing to grab a air bubble. I haven't gotten them all yet, but I've got around 60 or so so if I ever get my ass in gear I'll find out what the rest are. (That goddamn Planet Wisp Act 1 Doppelganger mission should give me plenty of practice to find its Red Rings...) |

I've played both Planet Wisp acts enough times to be pretty decent at it, but I do feel your pain for the doppelganger missions for Planet Wisp. Act 1 gave me the most trouble. But if it helps, study this guy: Edited by Arem, Jan 31 2012, 10:58 AM.

That's because that guy makes it look that way. Your first run-through, you will suffer. You didn't see it much, but there are tons of those rocket-launchers inside the factory, and most of them you can't see until you accidentally step on them. Thankfully, most of them are scripted, so they don't really go off unless your close by. Like I said before, it took some time before I got half-way decent at the level and knew what to expect. |

But that's the ultimate fun of a Sonic level; being faster than whatever the level has to throw at you. This doesn't really look all that different from some of the later stages in the early Sonic games. |

Worst part in the entire game... I remember when Sonic's last bosses were actually fun.... Also "Sega Confirms 1.63 Million Copies of Generations Sold in 2011"

Geez, SEGA Sammy Financial doesn't seem to know a profit when it sees it. That's 30-60 million dollars they're talking about for Generations alone. That's fantastic for a video game!

I honestly feel like I'm starting to hate speedruns in Sonic games. Especially these ones. Edited by Luffy Foxtrot, Feb 3 2012, 03:38 PM.

Well, that explains the very low times I've been seeing on that level. |

...Holy shit. I didn't even know about that first Helicopter, and I was wondering why there was a dash ring down there. The rest of it... That was just exploitation. Edit: Now that I think about it, I'm curious about some of the posted times in the 3DS version too. My best run of Big Arm is 27 seconds (Score two hits while it's hovering at the top, two more once it's down, smack it once more just before it flies off, get hit and retaliate for one more, then finish it off), but the top score is 22. I don't really care much for speed runs, I just do the bare minimum to get the highest rank then never bother with speeding. In fact, if I ever go back and do levels, I'd probably spend more time on them and explore areas I've never been to. Seriously, that's infinitely more fun. |

Though I don't really take Yahtzee's reviews seriously, he brings up a good point: Why is there a Sonic Next Gen level in the game, given that nobody liked the game and that it literally wrote itself out of the continuity at the end? How did the Time Eater even absorb an event that never happened storyline-wise, and why did they decide to make it the hardest goddamn level in the game for Classic Sonic (I'm not even going to try with Modern Sonic until I get a controller). I think I died more on Crisis City than I had on every single level up to that point combined, plus Rooftop Run (I've yet to play Planet Wisp) |
