Played a demo of Sonic 4 last night, here are my thoughts so far: it's definetly a different beast from the previous games. Sonic feels a lot weightier, heavier, and indeed he doesn't accelerate as quickly as he used to. This doesn't mean he's slow, however: a quick jump boost can get him up to speed quickly, and there are plenty of tricks to maintain or increase his speed. I might get the full game today, if not tommorow. |

Okay, now that I've had a chance to play the game all the way up to the final boss... fuck instant deceleration to hell, seriously. But other than that, I actually kinda like the new approach they've taken here. More challenging, more rewarding to keep speed built up (hell, it's more than Press Right to Win, which I can't say the same for most other Sonic games, even some of the Genesis ones). There's this certain system of risk and reward that I've noticed happening in some ways - for example, a Homing Attack is the easiest way to kill something, but it also cancels all of your momentum, making standard enemy-to-enemy bouncing much faster if you know what you're doing. Also, unless I'm mistaken, I think the rolling might even be less speedy than plain running - which from a gameplay standpoint, actually makes a hell of a lot more sense to me, because rolling essentially breaks most of the challenge beyond death pits anyway so I might as well be rewarded for not abusing it (not to mention you're automatically uncurled after rolling off edges anyway. Some people say this is a bad thing, and those people are stupid - this is just more reason not to be overly fucking cocky about it). Really, the only honest-to-god complain I have so far is that there's little in the way of conservation of momentum unless you're holding the movement stick in the direction momentum ought to be moving (so if you don't try to move at all, you'll effectively air-brake and come to a horizontal stop even if you're in midair), but it's hardly the gamebreaking mess that so many people are making it out to be. One neat little thing I discovered by accident is that if you do an air dash (ie unguided Homing Attack) immediately after stepping off a ledge, you'll shoot off with a fair bit more velocity than if you performed one through an ordinary jump. Not entirely sure why it'd do that, but it really comes in handy in some situations provided you weren't trying to do a proper jump as opposed to a speed boost (which I was, around the time I realized this was happening). |

This being the Sonic topic... FUCK YEAH I BEAT SANDOPOLIS I'm like fifteen years late or so, but fuck yeah! Also tried the Sonic 4 demo and was impressed. If nothing else comes up that I want to buy more, I'll probably be getting it. |

I could beat him in under thirty seconds. It's easy: jump him three times before he spin dashes, hit him three more times after he stops spindashing, then spindash into him while he's dashing. Easy money. |
