I dunno, I feel like when they say new "era" it almost seem like it's a whole other world of Sonic, like a radical change that has affected the franchise so much. Ah well, it's all good I guess, though doesn't Unleashed have the same formula as Adventure? Don't you have a large hub world and pick out the levels from there? |

Adventure style doesn't have boostspam. That's more than enough to set the two eras apart practically by default, even if you don't account for the changes in handling and level design that would make them incompatible with each other. I definently prefer the modern style even though low speed handling needs a big fucking tuneup, but if they ditched both of them and actually made some concious effort towards 3D slope physics as a main gameplay mechanic again, I honestly wouldn't complain. But that's a different subject altogether, I guess. EDIT: In other news, Sonic Shorts 7, mofuckas. Probably the weakest one in the series so far though, due in large part to being animated entirely by a single person, and the first skit being absolute garbage, but there's a few gems in there. Ehhh.. the part were Tails has a rabbit on his plate made me smile a little, and a few misc things I don't even remember. I don't usually laugh at these flash things unless it's just brilliant. You're right about that first one. |

I'm inclined to disagree, mainly because by Sonic Heroes, the formula was feeling dated. Sadly, I fear the time may come when the current formula may meet that stagnant feeling.

Actually, that wasn't bad, I think either the last one or the one before were a lot more boring. On that note, any hidden Tails Doll skit in this one? |

Oh, I just noticed the link. I think my favorite is the one with the tornado. As for that last one, I think it should have ended after the ants attacked Knuckles. Anything else after that was overkill. |

I eagerly await that day. Because then they'll either revert to something else or come up with something actually new. |

If they revert, that means they'll either be exclusively 2D, or we'll have another Sonic '06 on our hands. I'm tired of that shit. And what would actually be new? |

Ha, the modern formula has been stagnant for me since it first started. There was nothing good about SatSR or Unleashed, or at least certainly nothing groundbreaking to make it any better than whatever came before it. I still don't know how people can manage to play Unleashed or Colors without having to replay the same sections of level over and over again to memorize whatever is coming up. Give me back my Adventure 2 gameplay, or even the Shadow gameplay; sure, the Adventure titles liked to be glitchy, and the Shadow game had some incredibly tight controls, but otherwise I usually felt like I was in control of everything my character was doing, especially in Shadow where the amount of control I had over my character shined the most. |

Just because Sonic '06 was a bit broken, doesn't mean they can't make a better one with everything working. |

Yea, but given the absolute retardation of the fanbase in general, to put it in BL's terms somewhat, god forbid that Sonic Team either A) Try to please the fans by going back on old times or; B) That they actually try something new. |

Even if that game had no glitches whatsoever, it would still have been a flop. There were parts of the level design that were so insanely cutthroat that even when performed flawlessly, you still might die. I'm looking at you tightrope in Kingdom Valley! Not to mention the story was plothole city. And I actually quite enjoy the way things are now. But of course, apparently, I have this ungodly ability to actually avoid the death traps in the high speed gameplay. -_- |

Because 1) it's an established part of the gamestyle's challenge, literally no different from the likes of Super Meat Boy with the exception that the lives are, even though generous, still finite, and 2) it's a genuine thrill to play once you do have a goddamned clue of what you're doing, because a perfect run is so satisfying to pull off that it easily doubles as its own reward. Granted, there were occasions in Unleashed where they got it wrong (one of particular note being a curve in Empire City that you're supposed to start grinding around before it's even fucking visible), and Secret Rings is just plain up shit altogether, but it certaintly doesn't make it any less legitimate as a means of establishing a difficulty curve. Especially when, with the exception of Adabat, Eggmanland and the aformentioned example, fucking up a memory-based decision typically only results in a less convenient or rewarding route. Even all that said though, most of what either of us could say about Unleashed is for naught based on the improvements to the style that have come in the form of Colours, and quite likely Generations too. The ironic thing here is that the Adventure era titles had a bigger tendency to rob control of your character for the sake of scripted sequences than Unleashed ever did. There was at least one level in ShTH where I shit you not, I could put the controller down and the game would literally play itself for nearly a full minute. Frankly, even outside of scripted level design I'm still not convinced it's "being in control of the character" so much as "arbitarily losing all momentum at any time due to an absolutely Sonic 4-esque lack of inertia", which would probably explain why they had to spam boostpads whenever they wanted to make the game feel fast again. What they should be doing is designing a game that can hold up based on objective merit, really. Trying to appease fans is literally about as feasible as trying to win a game of Chinese Whispers with tens of thousands of people - a lot of these idiots don't even know anymore why they ask for this shit, but say it anyway because it's what everyone else says and they want to stay in the in crowd without even questioning what it really does for the Sonic style. Which more than anything else is demonstrated by the "Sonic Only" fad which resulted in Unleashed, and they bitched anyway because it only meant Sonic Team had to take a slightly different approach to the genre roulettes that turned people off to it in the first place. Similarly, doing new stuff for the sole sake of doing new stuff doesn't exactly work either, because... well, look how well the werehog turned out. It was brave, sure, but it contradicted the entirety of the game in the process (I mean let's be honest here, a lot less people would object to a beat-em-up in a Sonic game if it actually played somewhat like a Sonic game in the process), and the wishes of not just the fans, not even just the few sane people who still play these games, but against the advisement of every other Sega branch I can actually think of. And when several continental divisions are in near-unanimous agreement that something shouldn't be done, and Sega Japan does it anyway, something has gone horribly wrong. This shouldn't be about appeasing fans or constantly generating new formulae, because without a steady hand in the design process all it really serves to do is to divide their target audience even further than it already has. I guess having a fanbase with an average age of 10 and and average IQ of 4 doesn't exactly help that image, but all the same I really wish people would stop thinking of this as "SONIC MUST BE ADVENTURE STYLE TO SUCCEED AGAIN" or "THIS GAME WILL SUCK IF IT DOESN'T HAVE ROLLING", because that kind of absolutionist attitude helps nobody and more often than not, ends up backfiring on them. Why can't it be something more like "Hey guys, how about a Sonic game that doesn't suck? That sounds nice"? Sonic Team can tell me and everyone else to go fuck ourselves for all I care, as long as they base their decisions on what can objectively be argued as good or bad, rather than the opinions of random critics and fanboys with no legitimate reasoning or games industry experience to back them up. |
