Then you get into the stuff with a bigger focus on story (also Sonic's Adventure design pretty much stopped after '06) Finally we have the current one, without stories connecting games (also Sonic's current, ever so slightly more classic-styled design)

Upon the failure of Sonic '06, it was later revamped to become the new formula that Sonic Unleashed would introduce, hence the modern era.
