I'm kinda shocked that the TV show didn't convert into more sales.

I have a feeling that it's because the TV show targets a completely different audience. The TV show is a bunch of goofy 15 minute segments that involve a bunch of characters who happen to also be Sonic the Hedgehog characters. The games are supposed to be this epic adventure and a struggle of good VS evil, ancient artifacts, and such. Exactly how were they planning to tie these two things together? I can understand if the show was a proper half hour block thing with short goofy segments plopped maybe after the episode, like the PSAs from the 80s and 90s, but as it stands, the show feels like it's completely disconnected from the games aside from sharing the same characters and setting.

The TV show doesn't have jack shit of merchandise the sell. The videogames being awful became common widespread knowledge too quickly for the show to do anything about it.

I honestly doubt we'll get a season 2 at this rate.

Kids don't really realize or care about an epic struggle vs the goofiness, they like the characters and will go for that. I mean, you have to expect it's not going to be that goofy. Problem is that the show is on so early that I think some kids probably still aren't aware that it even exists. Therefore, it's kind of hard for the show to help sales much. That, and word of mouth about the bugginess doesn't help.

Havoc, did you have a weird childhood were you didn't force yourself to wake up early in the morning on the weekends just to catch your favourite cartoon? :P

While kids don't mind the goofiness, they will watch the show because of the other thing. This is how entire toy lines have continued to sell (at least to boys), by creating a new franchise of goodguys VS badguys and getting kids to make their parents buy them all the characters trying to beat each other up. Worked for GI Joe, Transformers, Ninja Turtles, you name it. The fact of the matter is, Sega came into this as part of a massive merchandising campaign, but they've dropped the ball into a bottomless pit on how badly they've managed this. They create a show aimed at the 6-8 year old demographic and they create a game aimed at the 8-13 year old demographic. That's the inherent problem here, aside from lord knows how well made the toys are and how good/bad the comic tie-in is doing right now, plus the piss-poor lack of advertising on everything but the damn games, which are the ass end of this merchandising monster. Had Sega secured the franchise as a whole, the failing games wouldn't have been as hard of a blow since they could recuperate losses through toys, cartoons and comics.

As it stands, this thing fell apart before it even got anywhere.

It's also because the show hasn't even started airing yet anywhere other than America. For some reason they thought it was a good idea to delay the show for an entire fucking year everywhere else - including the UK, where Sonic fandom is by far the most prominent.

On the subject of the tonal dissonance though, part of me wonders if the in-level dialogue was supposed to bridge that gap somehow by trying to be funny. The fact that it failed isn't really all that atypical of a licensed tie-in when you think about it.

Sonic is apparently somehow more popular in the UK, so yeah. But I'm sure they're all catching it online anyway. I think the demographic for the show is a little wider than that to be honest. Just because you aim for something doesn't mean you'll get those results. ....Just look at MLP...

And no, I never liked getting up way too early just for school. I'd have enough time for one cartoon while eating cereal.. :P

Intended demographic and actual demographic are two completely different things. Media and products are always designed with a single group in mind (unless you're EA lol focus testing) but, more often than not, multiple people outside that initial demographic will take an interest in it.

Take Nintendo (or any global corporation with roots in a particular region) for instance. They may make products enjoyed globally, but their first and possibly most important demographic (to them) is the Japanese market.

Just because Sonic is enjoyed by people of varying age groups doesn't mean that SEGA's obligated to try and make a game that appeals to literally everyone at the same time. They may have actually tried in the past, but the results are never good.

That's because it brought a fresh retro feeling for half the game, and an improved modern Unleashed experience that felt more in control. The nostalgia was a huge plus as well. Like Enzan said, like a greatest hits album.

I like it when people use the word "gay" in any context other than a homosexual one - it only proves that they have the maturity of a five year old, as if their obsession with shooters didn't already do a good job of pointing that out. It's also pretty amusing that he pointed out Skyrim considering the fact that, y'know, it's set in the bloody medival era and doesn't even have muskets, let alone generic modern firearms.

But just for fun, let's play around with his logic a bit.

game - gun = gay
game + gun = -gay
game + gun + Arem = ???

You know they could take either one of those gameplay elements (again, but with the improvements) into a new game and do pretty well. I wish they used the retro gameplay for Sonic 4. Maybe then it wouldn't suck.

It struggled mainly because of the wonky physics, not necessarily the gameplay.

Mind you, the physics in Generations are pretty crap too. It's just better at hiding it because the Spindash is so god awfully overpowered.

It struggled mainly because of the wonky physics, not necessarily the gameplay.
Physics are a big part of gameplay if you're controlling them.
