Are we talking about gameplay or anything else? They've clearly stated this is a spinoff and an entity on its own, so everyone will still get their vanilla Sonic alongside this.

Gameplay, namely, but even besides that I don't view "it's a spinoff" as a valid excuse for changing basically friggin' anything they can get their hands on seemingly just because they can - which in Sonic's case is especially bad because their demograph already suffers horribly from crippling divides because of moves like these. Every time you add another canon, another style, another universe that defies the expectations the franchise has already set for itself, what you get is another sub-set of fans who can't agree on which should be the primary canon or style or universe or what have you. You think it's bad now, with Adventure and Boost fans at each other's throats, and the old guard of the classic series bitching at both of them every chance they get? Each one of those represents a crack, and with the new niche Boom introduces the whole fucking thing is liable to fragment and just goddamned shatter, and the bad press and word of mouth will reflect on nobody worse than Sega themselves, who are banking on a WiiU title of all things making back the 20 Million dollars in costs they spent on that version alone. To say nothing of the high maintainence involved in creating regular entries in two seperate arcs of Sonic at once in the forseeable future.

And there is nobody to blame for this but Sega themselves. The entire friggin' history of this franchise thus far is a picturesque warning to any long-standing IP to rein that shit in and keep your developers on a goddamned leash, because almost nothing they've created over nearly two decades can even be accurately labelled progress - just swapping one kind of shit for another and refusing to polish what remains. And you know what the sad part is? The highest point in the whole damn franchise ever since it went 3D, after all the bullshit it had to put up with under Naka's name, is the one time it dropped any pretense of trying to sell off a gimmick or a demograph shift, and god fucking forbid, actually focusing on an experience in which mere movement was the core focus and the most fun part of the game. The one time it worked out for literally everybody was the one time it tried to be its own damn self for once.

I don't know how anybody can look at me with a straight face and tell me this shit doesn't matter. The thought process behind Boom is representative of everything that has gone wrong with Sonic games for as long as Sonic games have gone wrong, and will continue to go wrong assuming they even survive long beyond this point.

Gimmicks work for Mario, there's no reason it can't work for Sonic sometimes. I don't mind that it's using beat'm up gameplay... If they did it right it'd make me excited about the game. The problem I see, is that they've done this before, but much better with a lot more depth. And damn... the game is 6 years old and still looks insanely better in graphics.

Say what you want about the werehog levels, but the movesets were something out of devil may cry and done pretty decently. Where it lacked was how long the levels played out and how it could be irritating to move around the levels. I'd welcome the combat if they actually made it fun.

I like it when people use the word "gay" in any context other than a homosexual one - it only proves that they have the maturity of a five year old, as if their obsession with shooters didn't already do a good job of pointing that out. It's also pretty amusing that he pointed out Skyrim considering the fact that, y'know, it's set in the bloody medival era and doesn't even have muskets, let alone generic modern firearms.

But just for fun, let's play around with his logic a bit.

game - gun = gay
game + gun = -gay
game + gun + Arem = ???

They work for Mario because bar one exception, he doesn't fucking use them. Everything Mario has done otherwise acts as an extension of either his abilities or the level design, and comes off as a natural, almost expected progression as a result. Sonic's gimmicks on the other hand demand that the game revolve around them, and contort to their needs, rather than making any visible attempt to blend with the existing gameplay to achieve the same natural progression and flow.

You could also argue that they work for Mario regardless because Mario is not in the middle of a god damned identity crisis.

At the cost of a stable framerate, mind you. Even capped at 30FPS Unleashed still regularly experienced nasty drops whenever loads of debris and blur was involved. Especially for a Sonic game I'd prefer a higher framerate over looking slightly prettier, but again I'm not going to give Boom's horseshit a free pass just for being technically good.

EDIT: I just learnt that one of the writers of the upcoming Sonic film (yes, that CGI/live action hybrid) has been hanging out at SSMB answering questions and stuff. So far he's confirmed that it'll have nothing to do with Boom, and had this to say when questioned about his motives:

I don't doubt Mr. Robichaux will do the best script he can, but in the end I'm sorry, still expect this to be crappy nonsense- this kind of movie will be flooded with producers going "but it must have the dance number to appeal to the masses" "but where's the human character for kids to relate to", not to mention what director they get, etc.
None of the producers or studio executives involved the project have said anything like that to me ever. One of the main reasons I was hired for the project was because they wanted someone young, who is a true fan of the character and games. If that doesn't speak to their intentions, I don't know what does.
Still not entirely convinced this is gonna be good, but he's eager enough that I can step my expectations up to cautious optimism for the time being. It's clear he's not just in this for the money.

Rise of Lyric will not have microtransactions, no news on DLC at the moment.

EDIT: Negative Boom impressions coming on thick, 'worse than Sonic 06' is legitimately a thing now.

I liked how the characters finally have personality

If he's referring to the dialogue, I refuse to believe anything else he has to say.

I hear the cutscene dialogue is actually pretty damn good - they'd just have less of a problem if they shut the fuck up in gameplay.
