 It's not really much of a pay to win model anymore. Sure, you need a hell of a lot of Red Star Rings to unlock the other characters, but now you can collect a few each run, since they now litter the field. That's pretty luck based, though.

 They were at first, but Shadow at least (the only other character I've unlocked) runs using his jet shoes and does different directional tricks during the section transitions.
