[OOC Interjection, GO! It's nice that you've taken the time to explain things a little further. That helped out a lot in the character creation process.

Just thought I'd say that.

Maleager looked out at the valley that stretched before him. In the two years he had spent living in the fort, this was the first time he had been placed on a guard post. Really, what was he guarding the fort from? Surely not from an outside invader. No attacking nation would make it this far inland. It made everything seem so... redundant.

He shook these thoughts out of his head and continued staring into the valley. It had never occurred to him how magnificent it was. As the cold mountain air whisked across his exposed flesh, he shivered. Even in summer, the valley was unusually cold. In fact, it was not uncommon to see small snow flurries in June. Another cold breeze swept across his steadfast form, this time from the opposite direction. Fed up with the cold, Maleager donned his cloak, which helped slightly.

Finally, as dawn broke, the commanding officer of Maleager's unit approached him. Maleager have a firm salute, which the commanding officer returned without hesitation. Maleager was the most promising soldier in his unit, if not the entire fort, and he knew it. Then again, what can you expect from a man whose father was an unidentified Norse invader? Nothing less than excellence. This is why he pushed Maleager harder than anyone else.

"Stand tall," the officer began, "most recruits fall asleep before the break of dawn." Maleager didn't show it, but he felt a small welling of pride within him. "I had my orders, sir."

"Gear up, training exercises begin in ten minutes." With that, the officer left.

The lone horseman made his way to the top of the hill, towards the direction of the moderately sized castle, situated at the top of it. He slowed down and dismounted, as he came to the main gate, and procured a small key for the lock from one of his satchels. His hooded cloak ruffled in the wind as he opened the door and led his mount in, closing it and locking it behind him. He approached the stables and tied his horse in before making his way to the front entrance.

I've been gone for a while...I wonder if anyone's awake so early in the morning.

The traveller knocked on the door, which prompted a quick response with someone opening it.

"Master Adrian! We weren't expecting you for days!"

"I wanted to surprise everyone. It's good to see you so well Antoine."

"And it is good to see you sir. Please come in, let me take your coat and belongings."

"It's alright, I'd just like to go to my room and freshen up before doing anything."

"Yes of course sir, your room is just as you left it."

And with that, Adrian Bartholomew made his way into his home, his heavy leather boots making it past the doorway and onto the lush, red carpeting. Before he made it to the stairway, a young, feminine voice called out from the top of them.

"Adrian, is that you?"

Adrian looked up to see his younger sister, Elisabeth, looking down at him from over the banister. She quickly ran down the stairs and jumped into his arms, giving him a long, welcoming hug.

"Lisa, I missed you so much."

"And I missed you too, you big brute. How could you leave your dear sister behind."

"You know how it is, protecting the kingdoms and all that. All in a days work."

"Well in any case, you better go up and take off that armor. We have so much to talk about, and you have to tell me what it's like being a paladin."

"Alright, alright, all in good time."

He let her go and began making his way up the stairs, his armor clanking with every step. He felt good to be home again.

Just as the sun managed to fully rise above the majestic range, Maleager, along with the rest of his unit, had already suited up and were standing in formation in the encampment's courtyard. Between the rows of men, commanding officers paced, inspecting every man for the smallest of infractions. Any sight of one would mean five lashes and reduced rations for a week. Already, several men were subject to this harsh treatment. Indeed, life in the encampment was strict, but it helped to produce soldiers of the finest quality.

Even among the hundreds of identically clad warriors, Maleager managed to stick out. He was shorter than most, and his build was noticeably stockier. As such, it was impossible for him to hide from the watchful eye of the encampment's commanding ranks. As the commanding officer walked by, he paid careful attention to Maleager's presentation. Infractions that they would have otherwise let slide would be called out instantly. That was the price he had to pay for being one of the best.

"At ease," called out the instructor, and the soldiers did as they were told. The instructor then pulled out a note. He cleared his throat and delivered the message. "As of today, our king has ruled that a squadron of warriors from each encampment will be chosen to travel to France in order to assist with the recapture of the holy land. Written on this note are the names of the chosen." The once placid unit suddenly became more attentive. Each soldier was eager to see battle. Slowly, the instructor began calling out names.

"Alphonse McIlrick."

"Thomas Harold."

"Fredrick Clemmons."

"Edward Aberdeen."

The remaining men waited anxiously for the final name to be called. The air was still, so still that one could hear a bird sing from miles away if they listened hard enough. Finally, the instructor called out the final name.

"Maleager Remus."

It had taken him quite some time, but Adrian finally felt that he had spent enough time in the bath, and was satisfied with the level of cleanliness he'd achieved. He took his time getting dressed, enjoying the relaxing atmosphere and the fact that he was in no rush to get anywhere, unlike the military. It was a good feeling, and he revelled in it. Once he was done he looked himself over in the mirror. Although not a very formal person, he did enjoy formal clothing. He pulled his navy blue jacket over his shoulders and brushed his sleeves, before heading out the door.

Finding the dining room wasn't as easy as it seemed, for the castle was quite large and spacious. Nevertheless, Adrian knew his way around and still remembered it's location. He came to a pair of large doors and pushed them open, entering the dining room. It was quite large, as a table adorned the center of it, filled with all manner of foods that one would eat for breakfast. Adrian noted that Elizabeth was seated all the way at the end, waving at him to come over.

"Well, it took you long enough."

"Oh ease up, I haven't relaxed like that in a long time. Where's Uncle Henry?"

"He said he had to take care of some things before breakfast. I don't think he's going to make it. Now come, sit, eat and tell me about your adventures!"

He did just that, and took the nearest seat to his sister, filling his plate with food. He hadn't had a meal this good in so long, that he tried to savour it.

With the intense light beating down from above, the marching unit scarcely noticed the chilled air that encircled their form and filled their lungs with every passing breath. It's not like Maleager cared anyway; his mind was split between the ache in his legs from the long march and the adventure ahead.

After nearly a full day of marching, Maleager's unit caught sight of the shore and the dock that accompanied it. Soon, their march would come to an end, and they would sail off into the fog of uncertainty. Maleager gripped his shield's handle harder in excitement and minuscule levels of fear. The time to prove himself as an able warrior was close at hand. Was he ready? One can only hope.

As he and his unit marched down the long, winding hillside path, they caught sight of and came in contact with other units from other encampments from around England and Wales, and together they marched into the small port village as its residence looked in awe at the fighting force that was passing through.

With a sense of calm urgency, the soldiers boarded the ships that had been pre-stocked with the essentials: meat, water, and beer. The sleeping deck consisted of a bare floor covered in dingy brown sack cloth sheets. The ships possessed no sails - clearly, the king expected the soldiers to row themselves to France. After a small supper (consisting of meat soaked in beer, beer, and water) and a quick rest, the soldiers took their places within the rowing deck and began their journey to Europe.

The burning pain in Maleager's arms became next to unbearable, but he had no choice but to grit his teeth and take it. If he were to give up now, that would throw the entire crew off and the punishment would be several lashes. With such severe forms of punishment Maleager began to feel like a doomed slave more than a soldier.

Hours went by, and finally, as the sun slipped below the watery skyline, the soldiers who had spent the passed few hours sleeping below emerged to take the places of the soldiers who had been rowing non-stop. An exhausted Maleager was treated to another meal of beer soaked meat and more beer before laying down on a random "bed" to sleep.

That night, Maleager had a dream, something he hadn't experienced in years. In it, there was a cliff. Surrounding the cliff was a black cloud. The cloud suddenly condensed and formed what appeared to be a young child with horns. The child laughed, and Maleager awoke from his slumber to the sound of slaughter.
