The loud and repetitive sounds of an alarm clock continued blaring for a total of 28 seconds before a hand came slamming down on the off switch. Sluggishly sliding off to the side of the bed, a young man shuffled off, looking at the display reading "7:00 am" before hobbling towards the nearby bathroom. One look in the mirror was all Erik Jacobs needed to see to know he hadn't gotten enough sleep.

Godamn....I look like roadkill....and I'm freakin' hungry.

He stripped off his undergarments and stepped into the shower, turning it on to full blast with the temperature at a warm setting. He stood there a few moments, enjoying the current of water washing all over him, coming to his senses more and more as he did. Finishing up and getting dressed didn't take very long, and Erik headed for his next destination; the kitchen.

And now, for some breakfast!

It wasn't much in the ways of a breakfast. Although Erik was a big eater, he wasn't fond of gorging on a lot of food so early in the morning. He made himself a nice, cold cup of chocolate milk and had a few cookies to go with it. He sat at the small dining table, indulging himself before he was ready to head out to his morning classes.

"Okay then...check plot 23 and tell me if you find anything."

"Got it. I'll ask Ted if he's found anythin' over where he's at."

"Hey...would someone PLEASE do something about the animals getting in? That's got to be the second time or so..."

Cyrus listened to co-workers at the dig. They all bustled back and forth, busy with various things, shuffling each other to different plots to see what they could come up with. Cyrus, however, stayed along one wall inside the ruins they were in. He paid more attention to the carvings in the wall, most of which depicting spirals, circles, and landscapes. He knew there was meaning hidden in them somewhere, but nothing he knew came to mind. So he proceeded to move along the wall, dusting various parts of it with his brush, exposing more carvings, and making the ones already found more pronounced.

"Hey, Drew. Bring those shards you found over here."

"Here they are, Sam. What d'ya think they were?"

With a sigh, Cyrus moved along the wall, trying to make the message behind the markings clear. He moved along until he found a place where they seemed to stop, then they started again. He tapped the part of the wall that was seemingly blank, and thought he heard a hollow echo. Confused, he stepped back and recalled the outside view of the ruins in his mind. The ruins were partially dug into a mountainside, and this wall should be pushing against either earth or solid rock. So why did it seem hollow? He knocked it again, and finally accepted that, behind this wall was indeed a hollow chamber of some kind. So he started examining the wall closely, and he found strange indentations in the wall, that seemed very shallow. With some agitation, he dug out the very solid dirt out of them and found that the indentations were hand-shaped. Curious, he placed his hand inside and found it a perfect fit.

Without warning, the section of the wall suddenly rotated, bringing him to the other side of the wall. Before him was a dark passage that seemed to go into the mountain. Curiosity getting the best of him, he set down the path, his colleagues unaware of his disappearance. The further he walked down the passage, the more his curiosity grew. Strangely enough, slightly luminescent crystals grew in various places around the passage, and their abundance grew the further he walked. After a short while, he found himself in a chamber, with intricately cut crystals made to adorn a strange altar in the center of the chamber, along with a stone spire with veins of the glowing crystal winding their way around the spire, like a web. The room, considerably brighter than the dark corridor, seemed to radiate a strange presence that Cyrus couldn't help but find himself enamored with. He stepped up onto the altar, and examined the spire closely.

The moment his hand touched the altar, the presence Cyrus felt seemed to jump and begin to swirl around the room.

"What in the world..." he said, looking around. The crystals seemed to brighten, then dim. The spire seemed to be pulling in all the light, as the veins of crystal inside of it began to glow brighter and brighter. He touched it again, and at his touch, it responded and began to glow green. He stepped back away from it as the presence in the room swirled and focused towards the spire, and a wind seemed to blow around the room, quickly picking up speed.

"...wind...? Inside of a mountain? What the hell's going on here?" he thought aloud.

Suddenly, a light spread from the bottom of the spire and began to flood the floor of the room, radiating outward, rapidly filling the floor. Cyrus stepped back from it until he found himself against a wall, where the entry to the passage used to be. The room began to fill with light, and before long, it was all Cyrus could see.
A desolate place, without any trace
It's only the cold wind I feel
It's me that I spite, as I stand up and fight
The only thing I know for real
There will be bloodshed!

It was the early morning, maybe a few hours before Erik Jacobs was fixing himself a breakfast of cookies and milk that a tall, gaunt man released a long arrow from its resting place on his enormous bow, fixing himself a dead man. Knowing fully well he couldn't stay for too long, he got up from his perch on the rooftop and took apart his longbow and stowed it away in his knapsack, after all, such a thing would make him stand out, which would be bad. That out of the way he glided down the wooden stairs as silently as he could. It was another job well done, he thought to himself as he walked out the side door of the three floor building and into an alley. He sat down by the enormous blue dumpster, collecting himself and allowing himself some light sleep, he had been up all night waiting to make his move.

He woke up around 7:03 AM where Erik was, but for him that meant three minutes past noon. He looked at his black wrist-watch and jumped up in partial panic, rarely was he late for a rendevous with clients. He walked out of the alley and onto the populated sidewalks of the city. He looked about, searching for a specific resteraunt, a "Faye Bar and Grill", that's where his client was, that's also where some food would be, who doesn't like food? A few minutes later he approached the doors, pushing them open, and asking if a Ghanji was seated. With a quick check and a positive answer, he explained he was supposed to be eating out with his old time friend Mr. Ghanji and happened to be late, due to massive foot traffic. As he walked down the aisle of empty seats and chairs he prepared himself for the rendevous.

Waking from the early morning cold, Van stood with a start. Looking around, Van took in his surroundings. "Right. Alley. Ugh" Stepping over a puddle, Van stepped out into the bitter morning sun. "I need something to eeeeat."

Wandering from place to place, Van seemed short for cash. "I really can't seem to find any fast food joints. Maybe I can ask some people in the housing area?" Making the long trek, Van had to be wary, as he was in the downtown area, where most of the badness took place.

Hmm. This house looks good Van thought to himself. Stepping up the porch of a very large house, Van thunked to old fashioned knocker. "Huh? A poor person, on my door step? No. Go away, you dirty bum!" "But...uhm...nevermind.". Walking off the porch, Van stepped out onto the sidewalk.

"Hmm. Where is a good place to ask for food? Where...? Ooh. That place isn't outrageously classy. I'll go there." Walking slowly, Van pulled his coat up over his ears. The house was a few blocks up, and across the street. I can't help but wonder who lives there. maybe the'd share their food...?

*KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK*"..........." "Hmm. No one seems to be home. I guess I don't get breakfast today. Maybe there's a park around here somewhere? I guess It's more sleep today, as apposed to food."
Turning away from the door, Van began to slowly walk away, head bent. Where exatly is a place without people?

Halting a passerby, Van asked "Do you know where I can find a park?". "Oh? Yeah. Go up the road about nine or ten blocks. I'd advise taking a cab" "Ok, thank you."

Walking up the road, Van saw a particualy nice tree. Laying his back against the Tree,Van slowly faded into sleep.
Man. I remember this place.

Erik promptly exited his room, his backpack en tow as he locked the door to room 712. He turned around to make his way towards the elevator, noting a fresh, new smoking hole in the wall right by the door to the room across the corridor, where his neighbours stayed. He shook his head, chortling under his breath as he continued towards the eleveators. Pushing the button for the Lobby, the elevator made it's quick descent, and he was out on the streets, well on his way to the university campus.

It'll just be a 10 minute walk from here. I'd be there with time to spare, scoring me big points with the doctor!

And with that, a scream broke out, followed by the ringing of a burglar alarm and some gunfire. Erik turned around and saw a man wearing a bandanna over his face running out of a nearby grocery store with a gun in one hand, and a black garbage bag in the other.

"SOMEONE CALL THE POLICE, THAT MAN STOLE OUR MONEY!"

Erik instinctively jumped up at the man, aiming a well placed punch in the face.

"Never fear, Psycho is heOOOF!"

He was surprised when the man ducked beneath him and kicked him in the chest, knocking him onto his back.

"Oh it's ON!"

***

Twenty minutes later, Erik, with his clothes torn up and various cuts and bruises covering the his arms and face helped a couple of police officers take the man into custody. Despite the messy scuffle, his face was beaming. He looked down at his watch and the big smile slowly melted into a horrified frown.

"DAMMIT, I'm going to be late...AGAIN!"

He grabbed his backpack and began sprinting towards the university.

"Uhn...wha...what? Where...where am I?"
"HAHAhaHA! I can't believe you don't know where you are! YOU are asleep under a tree in a park. However, your MIND is here. With me." "Eh? With yo----WAIT! I've been here before...am I..."

Van looked at his surroundings...or rather, what would be his surroundings. Everything was black, other than a set of large eyes of an undistinct color, glaring unblinkedly into Van's very soul.

"Why...why have you brought your mind to bare? What has happened? I have not even used your strength!"
"THAT IS THE PROBLEM. I have a yearning to taste blood once again. I WANT you to use my power. And I WANT you to kill. If you don't listen, you know what will happen."

"Hu...uh? Kill? I shall do no such thing. And what will happen? It has been so long since you last spoke to me in such a manner. Why have you suddenly grown such a blood lust?"
"Hahaha. You know you want the same as I. You love to murder. You love the taste of warm flesh. You, not I, have had such a yearn for years. Just ask that child from last year."

Haaaah...

-----

Shooting upwards, Van realized he was in a public place. "Uh. What a horrible thing, that demon is."
Man. I remember this place.

The man, having found his client's table, took a seat at the faux wood table. Not wanting to tamper with his headache, he sat silently, looking like he was praying to some god. The first to break the morning silence was not broken by Mr. Ghanji or the Hunter, but by their waitress, "Can I help you with your orders? Or are you not ready just yet?"

"We'll need another minute, thank you," the stout Indian man, Mr. Ghanji, replied. When the buxom lass was gone, he turned his tanned head to face his new companion, "Well?"

"Ugh, yes," the Hunter grumbled, fighting back the bits of sleep he needed, "I feathered the goose, now let's look at the menus, I'm starving," he and his client flapped open the plastic-wrapped menus, looking for the ideal lunch, "By the way, this is on you."

Gah, Dr. Edwards is going to KILL me!

Erik sprinted down another bland corridor, barely missing a couple of students as he dashed past them. He skidded around a corner and came to a halt before a closed door. Catching his breath, he looked at his watch.

Only 5 minutes late....that's not too bad right?

He turned the door handle slowly, making sure to make as little noise as possible and walked into class, doing his best not to disrupt the lesson by finding his seat somewhere in the middle.

"Late again Mr. Jacobs?"

Erik froze, the doctor's voice causing his stomach to churn, and his face to go red in embarassment.

"Eheheh, I'm sorry doc, I had to run an errand before coming to class."

"I can very well see that. I hope the rest of your dry cleaning isn't as bad."

As soon as the entire class burst into laughter, Erik couldn't help but look down at the condition he was in. Although his injuries had healed on his way to class, his clothes were still a tattered mess, as well as being covered in dirt and some blood.

Aww crap.

"CONTINUING OUR PREVIOUS DISCUSSION..."

The doctor continued, not wanting to embarass one of his smartest and highest scoring pupils too much. Erik sheepishly took his place in class and began to take notes.
