The Simpsons; Quantity is not equal to quality

The Worst Movie of 2007 poll including The Simpsons Movie reignighted a rant I've had before.

Has anyone else noticed a massive decline in the quality of The Simpsons? I've watched the show from the very beginning. My parents watched The Tracy Ulmun Show (or whatever it's called) from which The Simpsons spawned.

Now, I tried pointing out the decline of quality in the show years ago to my family but, being the nuts they are, they didn't believe me until just recently.

I couldn't really point out what the heck was wrong with it, what bothered me exactly, until about a month ago. The show has become more of a cartoon. I'm talking about its jokes, they've become so pathetic in the attempts to humor the lower IQ of people as well as children that I've lost the taste for it.

They used to have real-life sublte things that were funny, like pointing out the eerie fact that all laundry detergents have one syllable names. These days it's become a repetitive crap-fest that seems to have lowered its standards to compete with Family Guy.

Lisa used to be an intelligent person who looked out for the environment when she could. Now she's a constantly crying emo girl who drools over every boy she comes across.

Homer's always been a ditz, yes, but he used to love his family, he would do anything to make any of them happy. He didn't just happen to fix problems through sheer luck or by the help of others. The episode when Lisa had a substitute teacher, and when Bart was trying to run for class president is the prime example of who Homer used to be.

Bart's become a hyper-exagurated version of himself, though he's probably the one who's changed the least with the exception of Maggie.

Marge used to be a woman who was a proud homemaker and loving wife. A commentary in one episode even had Matt Groening talking about how they liked the fact that she wasn't the cliched "old battle ax". She was a woman that loved to love her husband. Lately she's become just the opposide, she's a whiny woman that kicks Homer out of the house for any damn reason that comes up.

Every single episode now is all about Marge and Homer's rocky relationship and how they barely manage to "scrape by" and I'm sick of it. With the exception of what managed once again to pass as their Halloween episide, I didn't even watch the last season.

I'm tired of all the new crap. Like I stated earlier, everything's become too cartoony, chases with people going in one door of a hallway and appearing out the other, breathing fire after drinking spicy soup, everything. They also seem to touch on current events and politics, it wasn't always like this, I don't care what Groening thinks of the War in Iraq.

The inconsistencies are piling up too. I've seen episiodes that were almost exact copies of older episodes, or the same joke tacked on. I could point all kinds of things, but I don't want to sound like an obessive fan. *cough*IchyandScratchyMovie*cough*

Remember when their seasonal episodes were really about the season? Not just a convenient short three episodes, or it just happening to to Christmas when they go to a ranch and Lisa gets emo about a boy all over again?

Quantity is not equal to quality. I heard a rumor about a year ago that the show was going to end because the voice actors were wanting a raise. I jumped for joy. It needs to stop, while there's still some kind of spark of respect in it.

What do you guys think?

When a show is dragged out and milked for more than 4 or 5 seasons, people have a reason to worry. The Simpsons had been one of the staple shows of the late 80's and early 90's, bringing the genre of "adult cartoons" to reality along with Beavis and Butthead and Aeon Flux. However, the fact that it's STILL going on, and well into it's 19th season.....this disturbs me more than anything else.

The show prided itself on adult humor, pop culture references and mature themes. Bart switching places with a Russian exchange student, only to be kidnapped by drug dealers, while the exchange student was a spy for the KGB was a good example of some of the episodes that went on back in the day. There was drama as well as humor, but lately, the show has degraded into nothing more than sight gags and gratuitous cartoon violence to fit in with the times I suppose.

The current target audience have short attention spans that require a large amount of visual flare to get them interested, and it's the reason why the show has gone downhill. People today don't appreciate the finer points of television shows, which explains why Lost is still a popular show, despite the lack of any originality.

The Simpsons was a very popular show back when I was a kid, and it was something that was very rarely known in the Middle East. Cousins brought VHS tapes with recorded episodes off of TV and we'd sit there and watch them all during the weekends. It had a cult following, until it became more mainstream and less appealing. I wasn't an avid follower of the show, but seeing some of the new episodes have really made me feel that, much like a lot of things that become popular, the show has become cheap and worn out.

I won't bash Family Guy because the show started out the way the way it is now. It was intended to serve as a hyper violent comedy with enough 80's pop culture references for only adults to get. In my opinion, The Simpsons should've died years ago, when it was still ripe with the good stuff that made it fantastic.
