I enjoyed playing through the campaign my first time, but I haven't had any urge for a second playthrough. Seems like Reach is still going to be my favorite Halo for a while. I'm not a fan of the loadout system, personally. I much preferred the options Reach gave you so that you knew what to expect. Gave the developers more control over balancing loadouts to stages. At least the weapon drop system isn't as bad as it was in CoD 4 when I gave that a shot way back. Really though, the campaign. How did they manage to fuck up a Halo campaign that was totally devoid of the flood? I just want to fight Covenant and these stupid teleporting giants are getting in my way. The Forerunner shit isn't even legitimate difficulty in most cases - they'll often teleport behind obstructions and fully recover their shields before you track them down, let alone line up more shots. All it does is sink ammo with no basis in player skill. At least the Flood operated according to reasonable mechanics, even though they managed to be more stressful than challenging in the end. Don't even get me started on the art direction. Edited by YCobb, Feb 2 2013, 06:26 AM.

There's just a weird overproduction to it all. I don't pretend to have paid serious critical attention to Reach's gameplay, but that game's art direction was probably hands down the best I've ever seen. Everything went well together - the UNSC looked like modern+ military, the Covenant looked alien, and the atmosphere was perfectly bleak. Halo 4 is... the closest comparison I can find for it is sports equipment. If you go out and look at a tennis racket in a store, they've all got weird ridges that don't need to be there. Sports equipment focuses on looking cool, usually in kind of stupid ways. Halo 4 does the exact same thing. I saw a discussion earlier about the game's unicorn-helmet? All the rest of the armors suck too. Even the base model they're all built on is just completely absurd. For starters, the Spartans don't look physically capable of being in the military. They're sticks. The bodysuits they're stuck in wouldn't make sense for military, either. The armor would either be all physical (metal plates and shit) or they'd operate entirely by force field or what-have you. I don't care enough to dig out an image like I did when I discussed this on a different forum, but there's one armor in particular with a gap running a good two feet down the leg, exposing all of the knee, covered only by the bodysuit. That isn't how armor works. Halo took a step down, and now it seems to be imitating its various mediocre competitors - Section 8 comes immediately to mind. Everything is unnecessarily detailed and after Reach, that just about breaks my heart. Christ, the Chief's new armor doesn't even look good, why did they change it? I'll also note that I'm not exactly a fan of much of the art direction for the Metroid Prime series, so as a rule all of the Forerunner tech just looked awful to me. The "orange glowing bits and lines everywhere" style strikes me as beyond lazy. THIS SAID, you don't notice any of the issues much when playing, especially not in multiplayer. You're still perfectly able to think "there's a blue guy, need to shoot him." I'm just disappointed because I can't appreciate this game the primary way I appreciated Reach. It's just not a beautiful game, in my eyes. I hoped 343 could do the series justice, and I feel let-down that they decided to do that by imitating the series' imitators. ((wow this whole post is not very coherent. If anyone doesn't get it, maybe I'll just crosspost everything I said over on a different forum when I took the effort to go in-depth)) |

Sounds pretty coherent to me, though I just Googled "Halo 4 armor" and, looking at the designs, they're kinda okay. I actually disliked Reach's designs because they were too bulky and rife with tons of accessories that made the game look like it was set in the immediate future, as opposed to over 500 years from now. These designs look a lot more sleek and futuristic, which seems a bit more appealing to me. I get what you're saying about gaps in the armour though; the entire point of having armour that didn't require ease of movement was because Spartans were the only people capable of moving like normal people in it. This is one fundamental flaw that, for some reason, everyone seems to neglect. Inside the armour, a Spartan moves like any other individual, but outside, they're so fast that it's as if time stops for them. Creating new armour that looks like it's easier to move in and consists of less heavy metal (*headbangs*) is fine and dandy for regular guys, but doesn't make much sense for Spartans. Not unless there's a more pseudo-scientific meaning behind it. |

Reach was very good graphically. But at the same time, I view the comparison as to watching an animated special versus a live-action sequence. The Elites look like a reptile alien, as opposed to sleek-looking eels/sharks in armor that just happens to be biped. Halo 4 took a LOT of detail in their models, but I find that actually quite refreshing. And the difference in the "spaces" are because of the armor type. I mean for example, the Spartan III's were children in SPI armor that didn't block any sort of weapon damage, but was small and able to reflect the environment. In a sense, camo on a skinsuit. The Spartan IV's may go with the same augmentation as the Spartan II and IIIs, but they aren't genetically perfect material either, they are down the line of the originals. So in a sense, the bulkiness of the Spartans is an aftereffect of both increasing technology and the actual Spartan subjects themselves. Like most modern tech. They can accomplish the same or better goal with a sleeker and smaller design. As well as the fact that they can make/acquire more Spartans in faster time as opposed to II and IIIs. |

I don't care what they look like on Legendary, I just want them to fucking die That said, the environments were very clean but beautiful at the same time. I just hope the covenant are used more in the next one, the prometheans felt like fighting Tron without a personality. Also they should have put dual wielding in the more casual playlists. Or had casual playlists. |

Well, I can understand the frustration with the Prometheans, but at least they aren't the flood. I was going to be pissed if the Flood ended up being in Halo 4, which luckily they were not. *Cough* Made me pissed that they were in Halo Wars *Cough* |

See, Halo 4 was very pretty, but it felt so frustrating to play. I ended up feeling like I had to force myself to play it...so I no longer do. |

I whored Spartan Ops so hard when I had Double XP tokens to burn. 14000 points a mission. There is a reason I'm SR10Something and can't hit the broad side of the Ark. |
