Hideo Kojima is one of the gaming world's greats. He's managed to create a following for himself by making games with a strong narrative and great story, akin to a movie. Around when Metal Gear Solid 3 was released, Konami created a subdivision known as "Kojima Productions", with the great man himself at the helm. He now has the ability to exercise more creative control and better funding for his projects. So far, he's established three prime series' during his years with Konami. We have the Metal Gear series, Zone of the Enders and Boktai/Lunar Knights. There was also the old Snatcher/Policenauts series, which has yet to be revived. Although much of Kojima Productions has been exclusive to Sony's consoles, Kojima himself has stated that once Metal Gear Solid 4 was done, he would be investing a lot more of his resources into the Wii, seeing as he thinks the console has much potential and he thoroughly enjoys Nintendo's creations. So, without further ado, this topic was made for everyone to talk about their favourite Kojima games. Hit it! |

Because back then, this board was comprised of like, 5 other members besides myself and they either just lurked or posted very little. Due to that fact, there was very little diversity with regards to tastes, so...yeah. Wasn't amusing as much as it was depressing, but I guess you had to be there. Anyway, like I said in the Konami thread, I think the man going out on his own warrants setting up his own topic to mark his achievements and upcoming projects. I did a search because I thought we'd already opened a topic on it, but I stumbled onto this one instead so...yay? Also, kinda surprised you haven't played Revengeance since it's PlatinumGames. >.> |

I'll admit in earlier days I didn't really have that much respect for Kojima, mainly because his love for cutscene exposition seems bloated to the point that you'd legitimately think he'd prefer making movies instead, and it's increasingly contributed to an epidemic of developers and publishers segregating gameplay and narrative into their own separate time slots rather than weaving the latter into the former seamlessly in the vein of, say, Breakdown or Half Life. My first real experience with him was MGS2 Substance, and I swear it was like half a fucking hour before I was even able to move, and I'm sure I wouldn't be the first to poke fun at his tendency for this, either. That being said, he's become a lovable kind of kooky over time as far as design decisions are concerned, if that even makes any sense? And to learn of the draconian treatment Konami has forced onto its employees makes me question how a human fucking being can remain as passionate as Kojima is about his work in spite of it. So I guess basically what I'm saying is that Kojima is an alien that spends extortionate amounts of money making videogames and somehow doesn't waste any of it. =V |

Makes perfect sense; I went from worshiping him, to hating him for the same reason to loving his quirkiness. To be fair, he probably should've invested in directing movies at some point during his life, because everything between MGS2 and MGS4 really just felt like it was trying too hard to be cinematic, while simultaneously trying to cram as much gameplay elements, regardless of how redundant and unnecessary they were (fucking camos and making everything edible in MGS3 was a special kind of insanity). |
