The second is a cover that seals the main hull from the rear axle and lock bolts. I ground a flat side on the nuts, so it can be set from the outside. I have to silicone this in place tonight.

And finally, the brakes. This really turned out better than I thought it would. Formica seems like an ideal brake material, only time will tell. Since it is so rigid, I could slip them on without any glue, and if you look close you will see tiny springs between them. These springs are cut from out of a ballpoint pen (I got the idea of pensprings from Outcast) and once you release them they snap back away from the rotor and re-center the lever-arms. After I took the pic I realized that they were crooked, so now the nuts are even.

Thank you, I am still wondering about the gearing situation though. If I hook the motor up direct to the pinion, I'm afraid it'll be a hardpack-only machine. Also, does anyone make a centrifugally actuated two or three speed trans?. I want good speed, but not a lot of "really cool paperweights".

Well most nitro vehicles use a clutching 2 /3 speeds. BUT they require plenty of RPM to engage and stay engaged. The only electric versions I know of that work is running large BL power thru the nitro tranny... There have been attempts to make a normal electric 2 speed but they arn't very strong. For normal electrics an Traxxas Emaxx tranny would be a good choice, or possibly a Tamiya bigrig 3 speed... Both options would give you shifting on the fly... |

Thanks for the info, I have also been considering a reduction of one or two teeth on the drive sprocket or a just that rc4wd 2to1 reduction unit. |

Thanks, I'm starting to think that eagerness to run in the snow may put some of my changes on hold(for now). If I just get a 34T pinion and 73T spur for now, I think I can get it running by this weekend or next. Also, I can't see messing about with a chain tensioner for just the one winter that it will have drive chains. I moved the steering servo further to the back actually and I'm putting the RX in the very front. The battery should end up in the middle in a lengthwise position. Hopefully the ESC can sit flat on the belly pan far enough away from the battery. |

please keep us posted. i am checking your post almost everyday. once you successed in your project, you should start selling the chassis LOL. i hate the stock chassis either and end up using a piece of plastic to seal the big hole in the middle. |

Manufacturing all-aluminum RC snow cats has crossed my mind, but it would be a long waiting time as I've been doing this with only a hacksaw, a hand-drill, a hole-punch, two wood-clamps, three small files and a jewelry saw. If I had a full shop, I'd do it, just to fill a much needed RC niche. Just yesterday, I started working out plans for a larger version powered by an 80cc 2-stroke 6-speed, we'll see what happens winter after next. |

Ok, I just picked up a 33T pinion and a 70T spur in 48P. Hopefully this will work well with the 19 turn orion V2 that I have. The stock gearing with a 17T/86T comes out to 25.5:1, which seems low to me. I need to re-calculate and see what it will be now, since direct drive would have been 5.045:1 final drive. |

If the diff and the chains can be counted as the "transmission ratio", I get 5.045 for that, and the "tire diameter" is 32mm. With a 33T/70T it comes out to a final drive of 10.7:1, is that right?. Any help is greatly appreciated. |

I am still working out where everything will go inside, but here are a couple pics anyway. You can see the aluminum "axle locator bar" that was needed, as well as the springs that give greater suspension articulation.

Thanks guys, even the most frustrating moments during this have been made tolerable by all the support. I just tried to break-in my 19T motor with the 3v no-load method, but it just hummed and would'nt spin. I gave up and spun it with an electric drill for a few minutes instead. So what do any of you think about the 10.70:1 gearing with a 19T Orion V2?. |

I seems a little high to me, but maybe it will move it ok. I am still around 17:1 gearing with my brushless motor. And I know it has tons of torque still. I'm sure I could gear it even faster. I just haven't had much time to play with it yet since I go the new motor. |

Thanks, I hope to find out very soon. After seeing your video, I'm sort of wishing that something might overheat, giving me an excuse to go brushless now, rather than later.

Thanks, I'm frantically working to finish the "snow-frame" that will seal out the wet stuff and after that, it's all just soldering and component installation. Once it seems to be adjusted correctly, I'll slap a lunchbox body on and shoot some vids!.

That is not good, I hope you got it fixed. Well, I was waiting on some more sheet aluminum to finish sealing up my chassis and it's here. I'm hoping to get this thing done asap, as I type this it's snowing again.........

Forget brush replacement, comm-cutting and wondering if I'll have enough torque/speed without overheating!,...My new Mamba-Maxx 4600 will be here by Friday. This project seemed worthy of such a system, and after seeing Jim's video, I was totally sold.
