what is it your tryin to block?? allways remember that the hackers are one step ahead so make sure your not ten steps behind. i personally use spybot and ewido (now AVG owned) crap cleaner works good too. i use ALL three every day several times a day. and allways remember that the programs are useless unless YOU run them. much like your house, they don't clean themselves. LOL :nice:

Strange first post.

I personally don't use a software firewall on any of my PC's, I've never had a problem. The hardware firewall built into the router is enough.

But, if you need one, I here that comodo is supposed to be one of the best free software firewalls. http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/

Well...

I used to use the free version of Kerio Personal Firewall, but they sold/discontinued it. Last 'free' version under that name was version 1.4, and it was very user friendly. I now have XP Home, and use XP's built-in one (not user-friendly but apparently seems to work) I back it up with a load of very efficient freeware programs. Grisoft's AVG scanner (downloads and e-mail) plus Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware. So far, no problems. I check for updates for AVG nightly, and the other pair weekly.

Before you say" He's on dialup, its the best for stand-alone hacker-proofing " thats a crock of sh*t. I was hacked over dialup a few years ago, and I found the culprit, but ISP and RCMP dinna want to pursue it (fools) DO NOT USE ZoneAlarm, its useless, hacker went through it like it wasn't even there, both the ISP's copy and my personal one.

Apple/Mac claims its the best for virus-free ops, but thats cause there ain't enough about for amyone to make it worth their trouble... *shrug* (ex-IBM tech who ~hates~ Apple/Mac)

Then again, using a *nix OS would make you even less prone, but I wouldn't know... and the best bet: DON'T CONNECT.

just my Canuck pennies...

I really don't see what all the fuss is about. Even if a hacker got control of your computer, really, what would happen? Your computer might be SOL but does that matter? There goes your 15GB MP3 collection... so what? The computer itself can't be physically damaged, so you can allways reinstall windows if something goes wrong. That would probably do some good for your computer anyway.

JMHO...
