Guys...

The classis model is just 4 arms that rotate and let the accumulating salt or sand slip off the side of the scatter-pan as the arms rotate. Better ones on Municipal vehicles have enough speed to the spin that the arm literally throws the salt/sand. Its usually integrated into the gearbox so that when the truck stops for a light, the spreader stops too.

Now... to examine one, hit the local hardware store, as they make human-portable models that you carry in a harness, like a backpack, but on your front. You crank a nandle, and it spreads.

As to build, blades glued to a 4-arm head of a servo rigged for continuous spin would be just the ticket. I may take a shot at this tweak myself, seeing as I've got a few damaged servos about.

ok make up your mind guys!!! i'm in FLA so i have no snow and no plowing vehicles to go off of lol. you've said that the blizz with a plow would only be used for smoothing the top of the snow and not actually clearing the snow down to the road do to the fact that the tracks require the snow to drive on. now if your dropin salt that means your clearing the road down to the asohalt and droping the salt to melt the ice. which is it??? a snow smoother or a full on snow plow for clearing the roads down to the asphalt?? the best comparision i have here would be a fertilizer spreader. LOL :banghead:

LOL We're confusing Shag...

While a snowcat is technically a groomer. My Blizzard is to get rid of the darn snow so I don't have to do it myself. No grooming for me. So a salt spreader is a worthwhile mod.

Shaggy:

Guess again: some municipalities use versions of the tracked cats for grooming the beaches in the US. I've seen pics of the units they sell for it, and they have drag rakes/blades to remove their own tracks, just as the snow versions do. It means no-one has an excuse not to join in on this one.

If you like, I can do a web search and get you a few links to makers that sell beach groomers. Florida has beaches, lots of 'em... so get off your tush, don't be a Bush. *wince*duck*

As for spreaders... remember, asphalt is not completely smooth. Even a blade can only cut as far down as the two highest pieces of asphalt that the blade is resting on at the time it passes over the patch, right? This means that thin areas of snow/slush/ice/whatever can be left, and to do the best job, they use salt to melt the areas, and sand to embed grit in it so its not slick. Sometimes one, sometimes the other, but often both.

Many countries want their municipalities to switch to a calcium-salt instead of a sodium one, as its easier on car bodies. Its the main reason why cars in warm dry climates last for decades - no salt corrosion! Look at Australia!

sorry white wolff calcium is not easeir on the cars or metal it works down to lower temps just like magnesium does wich is easier on concrete trust me that stuff destroys all things metal
as for salt spreaders i do some side work for a couple plow boys here got two of them to work on tommorow.
that link i posted would most likely also have a auger in the box to keep the salt broke up then it would go down to a flingy thing (that is the technical term for it) and break windsheilds. there are also tailgate spreaders for dump trucks that just hang off the tail gate and u raise the bed to feed them
nice thing about a spreader is u dont real nead a channel for it on the radio just clear your snow flip on the spreader and drive fast works good in the real world they want to sell you fancy speed controls for them i allready got one my foot
:woohoo: if anyone wants some pics of real spreaders i could snap a few refrence pics for them i have acces to most of the major desins you would come across
