I'm far from a Heavy Metal historian so this could be the real thing, or maybe not. On ebay a guy is selling what he calls the original prototype that gave kyosho the idea to produce the Heavy Metal. "This is a once in a lifetime offering. This Heavy Metal Monster tank is the original "idea" vehicle for the model. It was built by Dave Sproul, the founder of the NR/CTPA(name on door), and has a few unique features. The treads have been cut-down by hand to the narrow size. The drive for the treads is done by a series of pulleys/belts which are connected to an Ultima transmission, and the seperate braking of the treads is done by an arm connected to two metal strips which bind onto two metal wheels giving friction to slow a track. This was conceived in the early 1990's and has been in our posession since 2000. There is an understandable reserve of $350.00 set for this VERY unique piece of R/C history." Interesting, On looking at the outside you'd think it was an outright lie. I could see the body having been available at the time but the wheels? Unless they were added after. It would have made more sence if the rubber wheels were on it. But then the interior pics show one heck of alot of custom work. Makes one wonder... Its either a standard HM with a total rebuild inside which is impressive in itself. Or its the truth with the wheels (and maybe body) being questionable... Impressive anyways... |

Well I doubt its the prototype. Why? He says it was ~concieved~ in the Early '90's. But my Heavy Metal manual is copyright 1991 from Hobbico, meaning Kyosho prototyped it a few years ~before~ that. Sorry guys, its an imposter. The rest is just icing... - The Heavy Metal used the same gearbox as the Blizzard, so why gearbox kludge? - Those rims were made specifically for the Heavy Metal. - That Ford van body & decals look WAY too clean/refined for a prototype. - The drive sprocket looks metal/cast... why make plastic/chrome rims and not make the plastic/chrome sprocket too? (the HM sold with a plastic sprocket) And finally the HM came with stock tracks, and is ~always~ pictured with them ( I have an original manual & box) The manual had an addendum "Optional Performance Tip" page but noted clipping the tracks voided any warranty on them. I strongly doubt its a prototype for the HM, but it ~could~ be one for the more modern EV, as that uses a single motor with braked tracks... $350? (censored)... shoulda bought the NIB one, fools... |

BTW the bidding got up to $212.50 but the reserve wasn't met.
