My EV became bound up very quickly, placing a huge strain on the electronics. Hence I fried my new esc :(
If you want to run in sand, I would highly recommend bearings and sealing up the drivetrain as much as possible. Personally, I will never run mine in sand again.

That sucks. How did it get bound up? Did the sand just get caked in the tracks or something?
BTW What esc were you using?

:o Sh*tty and they show it rippin through sand right on the box. Are you sure bearings would've prevented it from binding up?

It lasted 1/2 a pack. I have not tore it down yet, but basically sand got in the chain, brakes, and the drivetrain somewhere.

I was running the stock bushings. Mistake #1

But the esc should have shut itself down when it started binding, before it went POOF

It was the Associated AI Runner Plus.

No, I don't think bearings would have saved the esc, just prolonged it's life. I'll get around to teardown and see if I can spot the exact problem(s) later.

Gonna go have a cold one and drive my crawler for a while first :D

hmmmm, maybe it was defective. ESC should have thermalled long before it popped.

yikes :o

mines been ok on grass and dirt and concrete/tramac(albeit not much grip on tarmac/concrete), only time mines tripped up is when I got twigs caught in the chain(I thought the bakes were stuck on or something it kept driving around in cricles... )

that ESC should have a thermal cut-out tho, and LRP do offer good warranties on their ESC's you may find they'll replace it for free....

Teardown revealed that the main source of drag was sand got in the brakes. Sand running will require loosening up the calipers. Switching to a solid style caliper may work better too...

I went out with some friends rock crawlin and after hearing Gimbals horror story I decided to test my rig in the dirt and sand too. The sand wasn't deep but I ran a whole pack and other than throwing a track during some hard cyclons I had no problems. Maybe it's the bearings.

4/7/06 :new: - Good news! Associated replaced my fried AI esc no charge :D
Took about 2-3 weeks turnaround time after I shipped, but that's ok, I'm happy. Only thing is, I did not get any explanation on why it fried... but then maybe they just said heck with it and shipped the new without looking at it.

Now the dilemma is, do I sell it, or try it again in...

i tried to warn everyone of the dangers of sand runnin. hard packed wetish sand wont give as much problems as soft dessert/beach sand or even play sand. the diffrence is in the amount of thrown sand there is coming off the traxx. packed wetish sand wont get tossed like dry soft sand does. the soft sand gets into the brakes more then the bearing/bushing and thats the main cause of the problems. it also gets into the drive gear and mashes into the teeth and makes for nasty clicky sounds from there too. you'd have to do some major custom sealing to get it sand proof but for people like me that live nowhere near snow, it might be worth the effort.

but till things bind up, the blizz handles the sand like a dream!!!! :nice:
