dunno how many folk round here have one, but I picked up a cheapy runner XR311(made from a re-release kit) off ebay, and its great fun, the paint needed attention but otherwise good fun:

I also have a second one NIB, waiting for me to take the time to build and paint it as true to scale as possible.... :excited:

its a pretty cool RC, you dont really want to drive it hard for fear of damaging the body, but if driving at scale speeds its great fun, doesnt have much ground clearance, and it has no diff and RWD but due to this at lower speeds it will drift/powerslide quite easily.... :firedevil:

Sweet XR311 Spoon! Could we get some chassis shots please? This is one of the kits I want, but they are so hard to find! Well...there IS one at a hobby shop that I think is overpriced. If I remember correctly, it was somewhere in the $500-$600 area. ;)

will do... I dont have any stored just at the minute tho...

I got my runner for £90 off a Tamiya specialist in the UK(he was buying alot of NIB/mint Tamiyas and selling them on Ebay, I think he was a bit dissappointed by the condition of this one and sold it at a knock down price), the NIB one cost me £145 from a Hong Kong seller (it was either RCworld or stellamodels).

I'll get chassis pics soon tho ;)

Very very cool. Tamiya has always been able to make very realistic vechicles.

I'd be curious at whats under the hood as well.

sure thing:

here she is 'fully clothed' as it were:

and now topless!: :D

front (steery bit):

rear (drivy bit):

underneath:

and a close up of the rear torsion bars(it has all 4 but I cant take pics of all of them and the rear of the transparent skidplate is least scratched):

the torsion bars attach the the pivot point of each lower arm and correspond to an adjuster(ironically featuring a coil spring) in the middle this can be turned to make it stiffer or softer.... I run it pretty soft for good grip/less bounce...

its a very simple RC chassis, but as I understand it this was originally Tamiyas first stab at suspension and off road vehicles for that matter(the orig kit #58004 that is, mine being the later re-release of the same). it hanldes pretty well considering... :excited:

Nice pics Spoon! I really like how simple chassis are in the old days. I actually like them a lot more than the complicated race machines though :D

I missed out on a SUPER deal on this truck about a two years ago. There was a new hobby shop grand openning. I saw this truck sitting on the bottom of the consignment shelf (driver-less though and needed a little cleaning). Back then, I wasn't interested in Tamiya's and never thought about it. If I remember correctly, it was around $100. When I clicked into TamiyaClub the first time, I went back to that hobby shop to see if they still have it, but it was long gone by then. :(

no probs! :nice:

unlucky on that $100 deal.... they are worth checking out if it doesnt cost you an arm and a leg. the only difference between the orig and the re-release as far as I can tell is that this re-release has spring steel torsion bars, the old one used plastic ones which were probably more supple but tended to become brittel with age and snap.

for that reason you may find several original XR311's(or cheetahs for that matter, same chassis etc) on Ebay that are complete except for torsion bars....

I learn my lesson. A rule I follow now if I see any used cool looking RC's is: Buy it, then find out what it is later. :D

On the note of missing good deals....

A hobby shop near me cleaned out it's storage in the back room and had three NIB RC10 Championship editions. Limited run cars.

They sold them for $100 each. I guess one guy came in mere hours before me, saw them and bought all three.

I have seen these go badly USED on Ebay for 200 bucks. I'm guessing he got at least 500 bucks for each one if he sold them.

Another story of "almost" is the guy that brought in a NIB Mountaineer into my LHS. He had the Futaba radio,Tamiya battery,Tamiya ESC and the whole kit all NIB. Guess he bought it for his kid and his kid never got around to even taking stuff out of the box. He brought it to the LHS to see what he could get for it.

A local guy gave him $200 on the spot for EVERYTHING. Can you imagine! That's like $3,000 in stuff NIB! I almost crapped myself after hearing that one.

Had I been there it would have been a bidding war until the end!
