Hey, in an effort to help Outcast in his activation of these threads, here are a few images of my Leopard 1A4 before its renovation.![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() First on the list was a strip-down and cleaning, which is done. Next, the hull is to be properly painted (pending) and the turret is to be modded to be easily openable (not glued shut as designed) and thats in progress. I also have to get the turret MG's, as they were missing, but I have all the other bits, and some spares to boot. Anyone else got a Leo 1A4? |

NICE! Does that system allow for different gear ratios? I see a set of gears without the matching pair off gears about half way thru the system. Least I think I do. Not that one would want to go faster with a tank... Thanx for posting those pictures. What a nice tank!

Outcast: Nope, no-one that I know of made a reduction for this, and with a stock 540 and 6-cell pack, its a bloody speed demon. WAY too fast for scale. I think it could be reduced by adding a second set of the black middle gears that aren't setscrewed down, just held with collars in place, but that would reduce speed by another 2:1 or as much as 3:1 (I'd have to count the gear-teeth to say) Like the crawlers, most of us old-style tankers that don't upgrade to DMD gearboxes are using the Integy SCM 5501 55t lathe motor to power our units. It brings the speed down to near-scale, though I expect it'll be a tad slow for a real Leopard 1A4. I may try to fix that with a 7-cell pack, but until I see how it runs on 6, I'm not investing in new bigger packs. I may even go with a set of Willy's Black-Torque units for my Blizzard... some speed is ok, but I want some power too. Besides, I'm at the stage where I'm considering NiMH packs and a new charger... so I'm not gonna invest until I've got a decent charger. WhiteWolf |

Ok, I see my mistake. the lower side of the picture looks like a single shaft with a spare gear. The upper one shows the true setup. Didn't realize... I have heard that Tamiya tanks are too fast. Mind you so are their rigs. A lathe motor is man's best friend. And the fact you can get them from 55 turn to 80 turn should mean you can find the perfect one. It helps they are cheap too. A GD600 gear box from tower Click here is very popular with crawlers. Its a super cheap way to get extra gear reduction. You have to modify the output gear to get a pinion on it but its an easy mod. And you can run an extra 2.5 to 3.8 reduction with their gear options. |

Ok... now I'm flipping out... WHY? Cause I just bagged ANOTHER Leopard 1A4 for $155 US shipped: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...item=6033854248 This thing appears to have been a shelf queen, and NEVER painted, not had its prized rubber mantlet guard installed (meaning its PRIMO for replication) Ok, now I'm gonna flip out - I just read the PayPal ID - I sold it to this guy about 10 years ago! WILD : I'm getting my Leo back! ![]() Now I'd like to put out a call for any Tamiya Leopard 1A4 owners... I'd like to form some sort of mutual support group. Why? Well, many of the parts are no longer in-stock at Tamiya. As such we can only count on private trades, private sales boards, and eBay. And more than a bit of self-interest, as I now own ~two~ of the babies! To that end I would like to invite you to come to the Yahoo group I moderate for Grauwulf - The Armor Salvage Yard: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ArmorSalvage/ I'll soon post all my Leo 1A4 spares, and I invite ~all~ the Tamiya Leopard 1A4 part owners (even if you don't own a 1A4) to post their parts lists for sale so we can keeping these pre-DMD babies going. I'll also replicate the post here in the Wanteds/Sales/Trades thread under a hopefully ongoing 'Leo 1A4 Support' thread (with Outcast's permission of course) I hope to have the chance to recast the rubber mantlet guard, as the one inbound appears as if it was never installed and is not dry-cracked. Anyone know who can replicate 'em? WhiteWolf McBride - owner of ~two~ Leo 1A4's now - moderator of Armor Salvage |

Of course! This site's sole purpose is to advance tanks in the RC community. Helping people keep the old school tanks still running is a great idea. And Congradulations on your excelent find! Can't wait to see it when you get it...

I believe that's the A4 that was on sale at RCMT. I wanted it so badly, but when I checked back WhiteWolf had taken it  I hated you so
But I hated myself more for hesitating. Those are awesome. I want an A4 so I can deck it out with a full compliment of a Full Option A6 components. So I guess I will need to get an A4, an A6, and then transfer the drivetrain and electronics I wish Tamiya would just make a full option A4 and save me the headaches.WhiteWolf, that tank is just |
