depends what you want - are you familiar with running a nitro RC car?(I would say tank not car, but unless you already had a Nitro blizzard you wouldnt be...), it can be a little more involved than running an electric.

however beyond the basic power source both the Blizzard EV and GP work the same way, a single diff with two brakes, one to stop each track to steer(skid steer). I believe one of our members is looking into converting one into the other(nitro -> electric).

the nitro blizzard is currently easier to get on Ebay, and for a similar price to the EV right now... Kyosho are reorganising their distribution and the last blizzards sold out, the next batch should be due in january if you can find a store selling them.

personally I would get an electric(blizzard EV) as I am most familiar with running electric RC's and already have electrics that can go in it. plus I dont really want to have to muck about tuning carbs with frozen fingers if I run it in snow...

It is a good question. Owning both nitro (4 at one point) and electric. (too many to figure) Theres a couple plus's and cons to each type. These are some pretty major generalizations.

Nitro:

Plus:
plenty of power of of the box.
can keep refueling so your running doesn't stop
Loud! Some people love that sound
Con:
Messy, no matter what you do a nitro is always a mess to be cleaned up.
Loud! Can be a big problem depending on where you live. Also some can't stand the drone.
Hard to tune. getting the motor up to temp and keeping it there goes a long way.
Hard to start in the winter I keep the motor on the hot air in the car when I head out then it will be warmer, so easier to start

Electric

Plus:
easier to run, just connect and go
Bl motors can compete with nitro
Clean
Quite
Con:
batts don't like the cold. I keep them in a insulated lunch bag and throw in a pocket warmer for good measure. A cold batt in winter could lose 50% right off the bat!
The esc needs to either be a waterproof model or protected from moisture. Most can't handle water at all.

 good luck getting either right now....

one things that bugs me tho... the nitro/GP blizzard seems to have a 2 speed trans, presumably it goes pretty quick.... why not the EV? I have a feeling I may shove an E-maxx 2 speed lump in if it doesnt satisfy my need for speed with a reasonable motor.... I'll settle for getting one first tho...

I would assume the big problem is lack of torque with the nitro motors. It would need to be geared way down. Then it would have no top speed. So that would explain the 2 speed in the nitro. It gives it the best of both worlds.

Electric on the other hand has no torque issues. So you can gear accordingly. Now adding gears only adds to your choices. I think that adding an emaxx 2 speed or Tamiya 3 speed is a natural conversion.

 I dont want to put in a 3 speed partly cuz I wanna bash with my Blizzard and it looks a bit fragile, plus I have one already - earmarked for a scale 4x4 bronco...

plus I'd have to use my 6ch radio on yet another RC, whereas I can get away with a TQ3 and a cheapy 3ch Rx for a 2 speed.

I'll see how it runs with the stock setup before I make any major plans for it tho...

btw does it come with a decent motor or do I supply my own?

Well it comes with a stock can motor. So it will be good for torque, and run time. Tho slow.

A 19 turn should be a good choice. Still plenty of torque but way more rpm potential. It all depends on what you want out of it. If you want to put a plow on it I would think a lathe motor (55 turn for those that don't know) would be killer. Then you could add some weight to the Blizzard and have the torque and runtime to plow your whole driveway if you wanted...

Do any of you guys have a nitro version? Is there any problems with the blizzards the new guys should know about??

I know the tranny is finicky. You need to have all the linkages setup well to make it do everything it wants to do. But as long as you take the time to do it tight it will be fine. Thats about all I know...

You have to break in nitro engines.. that sucks.. And you can only run them outside, another suck. Indoor crawling is the best. ;)

I've owned Electric racing RC both ON and OFF road my entire hobby life of about 20yrs.

I then got the bug for Nitro since my buds were all running them. I liked the Blizzard and decided to go for the GP Blizz.

Nitro Blizz Pros/Yays

- When it stays running it's a HOOT!
- Lots of HP on the top end to rooster tail some snow tracks.
- Refuel and go again is lotsa fun.
- Sound and smell that can't be replicated. Bystanders are in awe of engine+tracks
- The 2-speed transmission is awesome.. I like shifting into low gear on a steep incline.
- This is a high performance machine.. It likes to be maintained.

Nitro Blizz Cons/Boos

- It leaks messy fuel everywhere.
- I have to preheat the engine with a heat gun no matter what temp outside.
- Going downhill at WOT will break a connecting rod. twice. Tracks have inertia!
- My local hobby shop takes months to do ANYTHING. So parts are sketchy.
- The tuning is finicky depending on air/temp
- Stalling the engine in a barren ice-fjord sucks.
- It stalls if you arne't throttle-conscious.
- No bashing in the fresh snow from the back steps in your barefeet.
- You have to PLAN to go play. Even if it's 5min you'll need support gear.
- It's a high performance model/machine.. it demands to be maintained.

1. If you want a novelty blast of a machine to drive and enjoy. Get the GP!
2. If you want to last minute bash with only a little upkeep and you enjoy some occasional inside action, get the EP

I own the GP and I enjoy it a LOT when I maintain it.

I plan on selling it and obtaining an EP version based solely on the mess and maintenance of the nitro.

If I could get an inexpensive spark ignition engine for it....I would stay with it forever.
Until then. Batteries for me next time. But I'll miss the smell and HP.

Hi,

I've been reading up on the Blizzard and I really like it and I'm leaning towards the current Nitro version. My reasoning is as follows: I've been on hiatus from R/C for a long time so I don't have the high powered battery packs, the charger, motor, or the ESC that most folks agree make the EV Blizzard much better. So therefore compared to the EP version the buy in would be less for the nitro. OK so I'm leaning toward to nitro version and I'm aware the nitro version is riddled with faults so my question is are they really that bad? I'm mechanically inclined so I'm not put off by maintenace. I've read the engine leaks oil, is every run accompanied by an oily mess? Noise is not a problem for me. Any additional experiences with the nitro version will be appreciated!

Cheers,
John
