Whats the difference between this and the newer Blizzard EV? I know it uses two motors rather than one with brakes, but are there many other differences?

also are they worth looking up if you intend to run it? I want something I can bash with, but its not looking too easy to get any blizzard right at the minute so if the DX is worth looking for I'd rather get one of those....

also where is the best place to get them from? obviously theres Ebay, but beyond that I'm not aware of any vintage kyosho specialists....

Well I am not much of one to reply. But as there are no-one else at the moment, I'll tell what little I know and hopefully someone can answer better later. I grabbed these pictures off the net.

I know that the DX used 2 380 motors. So its able to turn on the spot. It used a plastic tub chassis, and had 10 rubber tires. Options at the time were a front plow and rear snow groomer. Whether those were options from Kyosho or Groupner (sp) I am not sure.

The newer EV has much likeness to a Twin Force. It uses aluminum side plates and bottom plate bolted together into a box. Comes with plastic wheels, and uses differential braking to steer. It shares 90% of its parts with the nitro version. It should be able to handle more power then the DX without issue (just guessing there) seeing as the nitro version I have heard guys dropping in 15's without issue. Because of its side plates design the torque of the tracks will / can bend the plates. The answer seems to be run it in reverse. The plates push against the braces then rather then pull away from them. Or run some bracing. New heavy duty sideplates would work well too.

the DX looks pretty cool, but the EV looks more robust, I think that might be better to get for bashing....

well I've only found one so far, and thats on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/KYOSHO-BLIZZARD-LOOK-R...1QQcmdZViewItem

but of course he only ships to the USA, and I live across the pond in the UK. but the current price is around $250 + shipping which is about the same as what some folk sell NIB Blizzard EV's for on ebay....

either way I'd rather buy within the UK if possible and I hadnt planned on spending $300/£175 on a blizzard...

I can always pick you one up here in Canada. (200ish Canadian) and then ship it out to you if you wanted. I don't know how our moneys convert as to wether this would be doable or not. Just a thought.

Saw this on a UK site. They call it an EP model, but I think it's misprinted and should be the EV. Or is there an EP version? http://www.rchobby.co.uk/kyosho_ep_blizzard.html

If you're in the UK, you might look for 'em over on German eBay. You'll have better luck than us on getting one with a groomer too!

http://modellbau.ebay.de/ and go into RC-Modellbau (3rd column)

Use the following key-words (separately): Pistenraupe, PistenBully, Pisten Bully Blizzard.

Graupner called it the Kassbohrer Pisten Bully (real brand name of snow groomer)
I see quite a few up now (even one complete one) cheap toy versions, and a few of the Conrad 'uglies':

http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7375050351 (Graupner)
http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7375472956 (Graupner)
http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7373217435 (Graupner)
http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7374475342 (Graupner)

http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7374723329 (Dickie toy)

http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6020893657 (Conrad Ugly)
http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7375436163 (Conrad Ugly)

If you want a basher, look for a functional chassis... any body can be stuffed on it with a bit of skill.

Outcast: :nice:

Thats one good-condition DX you have. I'll be saving the stock controls for display, and using dual-ESC's or if I can get a few spares, a Tamiya DMD T-01.

Looks like yours is missing the battery crossbar too... not many have it at this late date, but its easy to make a replacement. You going to put bearings in the wheels and the final drive axles? I am, just haven't gotten to it yet.

Oh... know anyone that still has stocks of the BL10 tracks? They are our older style ones instead of the BL-10B's that have the every-other-link cleats like the Nitro has?

Lester:

EP/EV... apparently the names are interchangable, but may be market-dependant, like the old Kyosho/Graupner name difference (yea, the Graupner Pisten Bully WAS a Kyosho Blizzard DX marketed under their name)

Those were just pictures I found somewhere on the net. I am waiting for my EV to come in. It will be my first real RC tank.

It would sure be nice to pick up a DX as well one day. But then I want just about everything... :D

I think it was less a matter of Graupner making it, and more of them repackaging it with the extras, their German box, manual & decals (stickers)

Both my 'Blizzards' came out of Germany as 'Pisten Bully's, but neither had any German markings on them apart from the decals. Any styrene markings read Kyosho.

Its not the first time stuff has been marketed by someone else.

true lol... Carson does enough Tamiya and Mtroniks gear in Europe... I just tend to think of Graupner as the guys who make motors bigger than 540's...

Just found this site after a link put on http://www.tamiyaclub.com, and you have some great info on here :P

Quite a few of the guys over there are into Blizzards of varying types with some nice DX's with all the accessories as well as a fair few EV's.

The pictures of the Orange EV posted further up this thread are actually copies of pictures of my original release EV with Kassbohrer colour scheme from my Tamiyaclub showroom here.........

http://www.tamiyaclub.com/showroom_model.a...d=28205&id=3382

It seems Kyosho have recently quietly re-released the nitro and EV versions of the Blizzards as well as many of the spares. I recently bought some spare tracks, some hard to find drive parts and a full spare bodyset from a UK supplier, so the spares are out there if you need them.

By sheer co-incidence I also ended up with what looks like one track (a BL-10 one) from the DX / early EV release Blizzards still in its original packet! It comes in about 4 sections with more, thicker bars on it. Up until I got that I had always assumed the tracks were the same accross versions of the Blizzard :).

Although I have a few RC cars and a Hovercraft, the Blizzard is probably my favourite - there is just nothing like it. Just finished fitting mine with an 11 turn motor and have fully ballraced it, although dismantling the whole thing is not for the faint hearted

Cheers,

Chris

Chris:

I looked for BL10's - apart from one listing in the UK thats asking £23.52 for the packet (and you need ~two~) I can get two BL10B's out of HK for less than the price of one of these (list at $14.90 US on eBay) Thats also ignoring the atrocious UK shipping costs... If you know of some place cheaper, PLEASE let me know...

If you know of a place that has original bodies, PLEASE tell me! The new bodies do NOT fit the DX, and anything less than the original is a poor kludge. I can get the decals replicated, but the body? NO. I had one contact, but he vanished.

As for TamiyaClub... if you know of any other DX owners that have the groomer attachment, PLEASE put me in contact with them. If I can get a good scale scan of the parts, (I can replicate 'em for a LOT less than that kit that went on eBay Germany (over £120!!)

I would like to add a comment about the DX.

They are not able to turn on their own axis. They turn similar to the way the EV turns. One track can me slowed and stopped but the tracks are not designed to go in opposite directions.

There are 2 speed mechanical controls. One for forward and reverse and on to control how much power is sent to each track.

If you rewired it or used 2 electric speed controls then you could make it so one track goes forward and one goes backward.

Another note I would like to add about the DX is that they are really fun to drive. I have both a DX and an EV. Both are fun but in different ways.

The DX is surprisingly fast. It also has a lot better control.

Mine has the plow on the front and it is great to play with.

Also, since the DX has a tub it is sealed and the body fits pretty tight it seems to be more water resistant for the electronics.

As a side note. If you run a DX try to use one of the clunky old 4 channel remotes that are from about the same time as the DX. It adds to the experience.
