Hello All, I'll try to post again, here. I typed tried to post two times before, but lost the messages somehow when I tried to preview them. So here goes! I got the nitro Blizzard DF300 on Christmas and tore right into it, carefully seperating the parts and reviewing the whole thing before starting. I had it pretty much ready to go in a week and picked up the radio gear, paint, fuel and bottle, and glo-plug battery stick. Took a few more evenings painting and assembling it, what nice stuff Kyosho makes! I've also got a sailboat from Kyosho and it was a pleasure to build also. Break-in time: It fired up and ran as it was set from the factory and I ran through about 8 tankfulls at only about half throttle,(never got into 2nd gear). Then I started leaning it out and by tank number 10 I was opening it up to full speed. All went well with a few minor adjustments here and there. Big Trouble: After about three or fuor more tanks of fuel and a couple tumbles and flips I crashed it into a solar yard light and it went end over end and died. When I went to start it, the pull starter would not engage the engine, so I assumed the starter was broken. Not the case at all. After pulling it down I dicovered the 3mm CRANKPIN had broken off cleanly right in the middle! Repairs: Luckily, I build precision tool and molds for a living and was able to grind and polish a new pin for it, the other parts were OK and the pin pressed out of the crank nicely. I have no idea how that stout little pin broke when the connecting rod is a really small aluminum piece. Got it back together and it runs like a top, although I richened up the mixture 1/3 turn or so to be on the safe side. It's been running pretty well but yesterday I dropped it while carrying it by the tow hook and cracked the plastic bracket tha holds the drive sprockets to the chassis. I replaced it for now with an aluminum sleeve with a counterbore which I made up real quick. Good thing, because today we got a nice 2 inches of dense snow to play on! (I'm about 50 miles from Chicago) I recieved a set of bearing for it and will probably do a complete teardown and rebuild before too long. Does anyone know what the other bearings are for? 16 are for the wheels and I havent looked ito where the others may be used. To sum it up: This is a great vehicle, great to build, way fun to run it, and you certainly benefit by being handy with light gage mechanical fare. Wade Gyure |
