The upper one shows the true setup. Didn't realize... I have heard that Tamiya tanks are too fast. Mind you so are their rigs. A lathe motor is man's best friend. And the fact you can get them from 55 turn to 80 turn should mean you can find the perfect one. It helps they are cheap too. A GD600 gear box from tower Click here is very popular with crawlers. Its a super cheap way to get extra gear reduction. You have to modify the output gear to get a pinion on it but its an easy mod. And you can run an extra 2.5 to 3.8 reduction with their gear options.
