Montreal was actually a Summer games event, so we have a minor excuse there.

So... apparently the USA has twice as many medals as any other country.

I'm kind of surprised. I know we usually perform well (at least, from the little I've heard), but I kind of expected a few others to be ahead, or at least close. I suppose this is only the beginning, though.

EDIT: Wait, never mind. Germany got one more from the last time I checked.

...Still.

Sweden is fifth with nothing but gold medals, as well. It would be somehow hilarious to see them rank first in overall medal count without winning a silver or bronze, if that's even possible.

It's kind of weird. I don't know what happened to my national pride. Like, I love my country, but I find as a general people, we've let our ego get way too big. We think we're the shit, and I don't really see what makes us so great. I mean, don't get me wrong, I love my country, but I don't mind a little humility. Not entirely related to this topic, but it could change again anyway.

Umm, I agree completely.
I was more talking in general. I find lately, Canadians have been all like "Wooo we're better than everyone else" (not necessarily related to sports) and it pisses me off. We got our good reputation because we were good, now we're being arrogant dicks.
I don't pay too much attention to the nationalities in the Olympics though. I prefer to look at the feats, and be impressed.

See, I don't think it's surprising at all. The Olympic games are in Canada. We have a fabulous set of athletes competing. We got one of the best chances to in Gold in hockey, and that's important to Canada. I'm not sure it's about that Canada is all of a sudden arrogant dicks, it's that we have REASONS to be arrogant dicks. Honestly, how did Canadians view Canada up to this point? America's hat, Beavers, Maple Syrup, Hockey, etc. I think the games (and hell, the marketing of the games) have generally inspired national pride in a country that doesn't traditionally have any. It's kinda Canada's proving ground, I think. It's definitely not a bad thing.

Oh, I'm not referencing the Olympics so much. That's fine.
I'm just talking in general, which happens to be in the Olympics topic.
Like, on facebook, shitloads of people are joining this fanpage called "Did you just insult Canada? I couldn't hear you over our health care benefits". So we have a pretty good health care system. It's not perfect, and it certainly doesn't make the county the most amazing country in the world.
We used to be known as pretty a great peacekeeping nation. Now we're nowhere near being a good peacekeeping nation. It's just stuff like that. I'd rather we were more humble.
I get the olympics. We're hosting them, and in a sense we celebrate Canada. And we want to show off all of our good stuff. Which makes sense.

I dunno, I don't think idiots joining a fan page on facebook means anything. As well, I'm honestly not up on how much peacekeeping Canada is doing these days, but I won't be surprised if the conservatives are too blame. But either way, the only thing I've noticed is the rather prevalent view that Canadians are always better than Americas, 10/10, full stop. It's kinda of a...cultural thing.

"Inspiring national pride" is definitely a bad thing. National pride is unfounded idiocy. Take pride in what you achieve, not in randomly ending up being born in a place that was built up by people who aren't you, and definitely not in what others achieve just because they live under the same government as you.
