Which musical instrument would you recommend for an absolute beginner (i.e. me)?

Ideally, it shouldn't be too hard on the wallet. I'm not planning to play in a band to impress people or anything, it's just something that I want to learn for fun so I plan on teaching myself as I go along. Also, it should give me some early progress without having to spend years of practice before I can even play something cool. >_>

I'm looking at getting a recorder, but are there any more instruments that could fit my criteria?

Ugh, not recorder. Sucks.

Are looking to actually learn how to read music and stuff?

Well, I have a bias for (and I'm sure Luneth does as well) for saxophone. Assuming you have all your fingers, it's fairly easy to learn but an interesting challenge to master. Getting a good tone is difficult. However, they can be expensive and I wouldn't blame you if didn't want to get that. Guitars can be really cheap while remaining fair in quality. That's something you easily learn by ear (I assume so, at least. I've never done it myself, but teenagers do it and they seem pretty on the ball). Drums would also be good if you're good at keeping a beat, though I'm not sure how much they cost.

Also, fuck yeah, cowbell. Forget everything else I just said.

I would like to learn to play sax or trumpet. I do believe sax would be more fun. But I am poor and retarded, so I can't see it happening.
just saying.

Actually, trumpets can be much more expensive than saxophones. It all depends on where you look and what you get. One thing that trumpet has over saxophone is that it isn't a woodwind, meaning you don't have to buy reeds for it every now and then. But, because of that, I think trumpet is a bit less intuitive than saxophone.

If you want to be good at something quickly, do not harmonica. Plus, you can play just about no recognizable tunes on it. Unless you listen to a lot of blues.

Yeah, I guess that would be a good thing, learning how to read music. I don't think I'll be able to play by ear. Not yet, anyway. <_<

Can't afford it nor do I have the space at home to place one. >_>

Maybe a portable keyboard, but not a piano.

I'm in a similar situation and I picked acoustic guitar some months ago. The prices are affordable, and you don't really need a lot of space at home, plus you can take it anywhere you want, like a BBQ or something. You can start playing songs early and there are a lot of easy guitar songs. There is a lot of material (online lessons and tablatures, books, etc.). The guitar tab system is pretty easy to read, so you don't really need to learn how to read rythms and stuff.

If you decide to go for it, I really suggest justinguitar.com. I'm using it and the beginners course is the best I have found online, and for free. Lots of other lessons too. Another nice site here with a nice selection of easy guitar songs and other useful lessons.

I didn't know you could change this

Go to a pawn shop to look for your intruments, they'll be awesomely cheap.

Trumpet's not too hard, really. Piano's pretty easy. Recorder is easy and will satisfy you. Harmonica isn't too hard and you can do some cool things but it's really pretty boring. Ocarina's are easy but deceptively meh.

I'm still loooking for a cheap piccolo or slide-whistle, myself.

there's never enough time

Something cheap and you want to do quickly, probably go for guitar.

Especially with so many sites dedicated to it, and getting a guitar is very cheap compared to other instruments.
