Chapter 1: Class Dismissed

“Michael, give Okami his glasses back,” Professor Marcellus sighed as the football player held the glasses out of the short Japanese student’s reach. There wasn’t much to do to help Okami…he’d have to hold out for another five months before going back to Japan. They were on a field trip to a museum, and it was going to be a long, hellish ride…

“Here you go, kid.” Michael tossed Okami his glasses back, who fumbled with them before putting them back on. “Hey, here in America, we say thank you when someone else is being nice!” He shoved the kid further into his seat, who quickly started looking the other way, thinking about better days, back in Japan. Professor Marcellus shook his head. Maybe he’d retire…

“You seriously got them?” Peter asked Barry, who nodded. “Nice…man, we’re going to have a lot of fun with these.” He put the slip of paper into his pocket. Barry had found a list of keywords the principal stupidly kept on the desk of his office. One of them probably would let them into the school’s website.

Wallace was sitting next to them, listening to Dan and Larry play their guitars, which they brought with them. One of them gave theirs to Eric, who was having fun trying it out. He was learning pretty quickly, by how well he was actually playing Purple Haze.

Sean was staring at Mona, who was a few seats off, eyes closed. He wasn’t sure if she was thinking or sleeping. As he looked at her, his gaze was broken by one of Joe’s slaps. “It’s not polite to stare, you know.” He tried to ignore the football player. “Hey, answer me!” Another slap. “No Level 43 Elf or whatever to protect you in the real world, Sean. Get a life.”

Evelyn and Harold were sharing the same seat, but they didn’t say anything. Harold was sleeping, and Eve was looking out the window, humming to herself. Harriet, Kenneth, John, Raven, Charlie, Jack, and Herbert were talking to each other.

“Looking at her again?” Tom asked Andrew, who was staring at Candace. She was a few seats in front and to the left of them, talking to her cousin Ron. “Come on, you have to make a move sometime, you know.”

“Hey, I’ve talked to her…”

“Not really. Just a few sentences, and you guys walk off. At least try to be friends,” Tom suggested. Andrew sighed, shaking his head.

Professor Marcellus frowned as he turned his attention to Robert. Was that smoke coming from him? He’d had to confiscate the kid’s bag later. The teacher yawned. The ride was longer then he had thought, is turned out. Even he was getting tired...in fact, everyone was. All over the bus, the class started drifting off into sleep, no matter what they were doing. Marcellus closed his eyes as he rested, not noticing the gas mask the bus driver was wearing.

Chapter 2: Battle Royale

“Where are we?” Tom groaned as he woke up, stretching his arms. He was in a desk, and by the looks of it, the last one to wake up. “And what hit us, anyway? Wait…” There was something on his neck, like everyone else’s. “What the fuck are these metal collars doing?”

“We got knocked out by gas or something,” Andrew answered. “That’s what Ron said…and he sounds like he knows what he’s talking about. Where we are? On some island…and Ron’s not telling us about the collars. Ron, you never said why we were here, did you?”

“Eve, you okay?” Harold asked. She nodded. “The gas didn’t harm you or anything? Good…just stick with me, alright? And it’ll all be okay…”

“Hey, where’s my guitar!” Dan and Larry both cried out at the same time. Robert smirked, still having his smokes in his pockets. He was lucky that when the teacher woke up, he didn’t remember to search him.

“We’ve been chosen.” That’s all Ron would say. “It’s our turn.” When he said this, his cousin Candace immediately grew nervous, shaking for some reason. This wouldn’t be good.

“Congratulations, students.” They all turned to the door which had been locked from the outside. A tall, brown-haired man walked in with several bodyguards surrounding him. Each of them, including him, had a pistol. More walked in, carrying bags. “You’ve been chosen for the Battle Royale.”

The Battle Royale. Everyone knew those words now. To deal with the ever increasing population and growing rebellions, the United States’s government decided that every year, a random class would be selected to kill each other out on an island. A tape of it was shown every year, which brought discord and prevented rebellions. Insanity. But it was there turn to participate in it.

“T-t-the Battle Royale?” Marcellus stuttered.

“Yes. Don’t worry, teachers don’t participate in it, remember? Now, in case you have all forgotten the rules from last year’s show, which I have to admit was rather disappointing…” the tall man who had enter first began.

“Who the hell are you?” Eric asked. “And how do we know this is the real Battle Royale, not some shit a terrorist group is trying to pull off.” The man walked over to him, grabbing him by his shirt, gun in other hand.

“Look, squirt, you will address me as Mr. Kallen, the president’s newly instated chief operator of the Battle Royale,” the man told him. “And remember, I’m the one with the gun, not you. Watch your mouth, kid, unless you want a bullet down your throat.”

“Yeah, right. I’ve read all about this thing, you know. Every kid, based off future potential by some formula’s got a fee on them that they pay the families when we’re killed. And guess what? If you kill me, it’s coming out of your paycheck. And trust me, I’m expensive.” Eric grinned as Mr. Kallen threw him down to the ground.

“I’m sure as hell when I say I’m going to be glad when I see you get sent to damnation. Now, where was I…right, the rules. Now, each of you will be given a random bag. They will contain food, drink, a map of the island, and your item, which will be random, most likely a weapon. Those collars allow us to track you all down from our base, and when you are in what is called a danger zone, it will give a beeping noise. Staying in a danger zone causes it to explode along with your life. If we go without a kill in 24 hours, they all explode. You have 1 hour to get the hell away from each other after you all receive your bags. There is no escape. Any questions?”

Mr. Marcellus stood up. “You can’t be serious…please, not my class…anything but my charges.”

“We will offer you a fee if you need one.”

“I don’t want money! You’re wasting innocent lives! Think a-“ A gunshot was heard, and the students’ teacher was lying dead on the ground with a shot right through his heart. Mr. Kallen was a good marksman.

“Teachers don’t come out of my salary,” he laughed. They all sat down their, silent, beaten. This was the real thing. None of them opened their bags when they were given them. “And your hour of running begins…now.”

Chapter 3: Insanity

“And the hour of safety is…over! Mark these on your maps…the danger zones are C 3 through 6 and M1 through 4…in other words, the school, the Battle Royale facility, and the dock.” Mr. Kallen had a PA system all over the island, apparently. Charlie was running around, crying, separate from his group of friends. He sobbed as he tripped over a tree root.

Taking out his knife, Charlie threw it against the tree. This was crazy…he couldn’t survive. He wasn’t the strongest, he wasn’t the smartest, he ran away from his friends…this was it. He was screwed. Going to die alone.

“N-no! I don’t want to die!” Charlie screamed at no one in particular, the tears still running down his face. “I want to be someone…I’m always in the dark…”

In the fall, during soccer, he remembered one time he was sitting out. Eric…he played everything. Football, baseball, tennis, soccer, any sport that you could play varsity, he was in. He had an easy shot, a penalty kick, to break the tie. The goalie wasn’t that good. Charlie could take him on, couldn’t he? He thought this as he sat on the bench, waiting.

Eric had given one of his smiles, the ones that made him show that he believed himself to be better than anyone else. And that macho attack…the cracking the neck, the blowing kisses to cheerleaders, Charlie hated him. Anyone could do that stuff? Why should Eric be the one who did it right? Charlie never seemed to realize that with his idea of everyone being out against him, he cut himself off, and that was partially the reason why he couldn’t.

“And it’s a goal!” Everyone was crowding over Eric now. Charlie stormed off, now that the game had just ended a few seconds after the kick. He fell to the ground as a soccer ball hit the back of his head, from the other team as a way to take out their disappointment. Charlie thought that it had been Eric that did it. The popular kids had to be jerks, didn’t they?

“I’m not going to be in the dark,” Charlie told himself as he sat there under a tree and his knife embedded into it. “I’M NOT!” He didn’t notice the collar beeping until a few seconds later, not realizing he was in a danger zone. As he realized that, Charlie grabbed his map, learning that he was too deep in. When the beeping stopped, he froze. Nothing happened, and Charlie relaxed.

“Ha, you got me there, guys…” In his moment of relief and happiness, Charlie didn’t notice the explosion around his neck.

Chapter 4: Many Promises

Eve was alone in a warehouse, crying, with her panlid on the floor. The door opened and giving out a yelp of fright, Eve looked up to see Harold standing in the doorway, the light pouring into the dark building. He walked over, sitting next to her.

“It’s okay,” he whispered in her ear. “It’ll all be alright, okay? Calm down, Eve…stop crying. I’ll protect you…you’re safe with me. I promise, alright?” Eve nodded, crying into Harold’s shoulder. “We’ll get through this…trust me. We’re not playing the game. There’s a way out of this, I’m sure. We just need to find the others and think together, right?”

“I just don’t want you to die…don’t leave me alone, okay?” Eve sniffed. “I don’t want it to happen all over again…be abandoned.”

“Hey, glad to see you here,” Harriet sighed as Jack found her hiding out in a cave. “Let’s just play the survival game, alright?”

“Sure thing…we’ll take turns watching and hang out. No one’s going to come here any time soon, I bet,” Jack agreed. “So, how long have we been friends now, exactly?”

“Ten years,” Harriet counted.

“Let’s keep it that way, alright? Promise?”

“Yeah…” Harriet wondered why Jack was bringing it up. Wait…maybe…maybe he was playing the game! Damn it, you couldn’t trust anyone, could you? This was insane…maybe she was just paranoid. Or maybe…just maybe…

In a forest, though in a danger zone, Sean ran around, not knowing what to do. Stopping, he took out his tracking device. Maybe he did know. This thing showed him the location of every student on the island if they were alive. He saw Mona’s dot…

“Hey there,” a voice spoke behind him. Turning around, Sean saw Kenneth pointing a shotgun straight at him. “Sorry to do this…”

“What are you thinking?” Sean asked. He found himself backing up against a tree. There was no way out. “What are you doing?”

“There’s only one person that’s going to survive this thing!” Kenneth shouted. “And it’s going to be me!” His arms were shaking wildly. “See you when I’m in hell, but from old age.” As Kenneth readied to pull the trigger, a figure jumped out and smashed him with something long and heavy. Sean had his eyes closed by then, and when he opened them up, he first saw the corpse of Kenneth.

It was bloody, limp, and beaten up, with bruises all over. There was a gash in his chest, where blood poured out of. Sean had a feeling that if he looked from a different angle, more above the body, he’d see the no longer pulsating heart, probably with a gaping hole in it. Looking up, still trembling, Sean saw Joe with his crowbar over his shoulders.

“This isn’t one of your games, Sean. Killing isn’t as easy as it seems, right?” Joe’s arms were twitching, as if wanting to throw his crowbar away. He looked like he needed to throw up.

“Why are you helping me?” Sean asked as Joe offered him his hand to help him up.

“Like I said, this isn’t one of your games. This is the real deal. Now come on, is there anyone you want to find?” Joe asked. “I’m guessing that thing with all the blinking red dots is your weapon…”

“It’s a tracking device,” Sean replied. “And…yeah…I want…I want to find Mona.” Joe raised his eyebrows as he helped Sean up.

“Damn, you’ve got better taste then I thought,” Joe remarked. “Let’s go find her.”

Wallace was running across the island, until he stopped at an abandoned gas station. There were two figures there that he knew well. “Wallace, glad you could make it. Watch me at work,” Peter told him.

“What are you doing?” Wallace asked.

“Well, Barry here…remember that list of words? I think some could be passwords to getting into the Battle Royale computer system,” Peter answered.

“But- wait, did you get a laptop as your weapon?” Wallace asked. Peter nodded. “Well, what are you trying to do?”

“Well, you and Barry keep me safe. I’m going to make it so that the collars won’t be a threat anymore. Then I’ll shut down all surveillance but not before making it so that I can track everyone myself,” Peter explained. “We all get together from there.”

“Hey, don’t worry, we’ve got your back.” Wallace took out his shotgun and sat against a wall. “We’ve got everything covered here.” Barry took out his dagger. He never says anything, does he…hey, what does that mean? Damn…I gotta chill, stop freaking out…just stop…freaking out…

Mona ran, not knowing where to go. She was popular, but she had no real friends. There was no way for her to win with a fork, either. She was alone. Mona gave a yelp of fright when she heard a noise from the right. “Who’s there?”

“Don’t worry, we’re not here to kill you,” Candace answered. “My cousin and I aren’t after anyone’s blood.” Mona trusted Candace. Ron…that was different.

“Yo, there you are,” Dan shouted as he saw Larry on the beach. “Damn, I thought someone already got to you…hey, Larry? What’s wrong? Come on, what are you doing?” Larry was just staring out into the ocean. “Larry?!” The guy’s knife was in his hand.

“Dan…sorry.”

“Larry, what the hell are you talking about?!”

“Stop pretending this a fucking game or whatever! This is the real deal! Come on, there’s only going to be one survivor! I’M NOT GOING DOWN!” He lunged at Dan with his army knife. Both of their minds were taken over by the reptilian brain, the part that was pure instinct. And both of them were told to fight each other.

Struggling, Larry had his knife in his right hand, trying to stab Dan who was under him, grabbing his wrist. Rolling over, Dan let Larry fall down as he used his rope to choke Larry, cutting off his best friend’s oxygen. When Larry finally stopped fighting back, Dan realized he was now a full-fledged murderer.

“You know what? We’re both going to get out of this, escape from this island, Larry,” Dan claimed. “You already did. My turn, now…” Before leaving, he added something that he felt half-badass, half-lame. “Rock on, Larry. Rock on.”

“Hey, Tom?” Andrew asked as they ran together. “Promise me something…”

“Sure, but what is it?”

“If I die…”

“Andrew, you’re not going to die,” Tom argued.

“But if I do, watch over Candace, alright? Find her…and make sure she lives, okay? Promise me, Tom,” Andrew pleaded.

“But-“

“Promise me.”

“I promise,” Tom vowed, “but I won’t have to keep it, since you’re going to stay alive. And I also promise that I’m not going to play the game unless for your little girlfriend, okay? Hey, Herb!” Herbert was just ahead, waiting for them. “You want to stay with us?”

“No.” Herbert lunged at Andrew, his hands grasped around his neck to suffocate him. “I still have a life I want to live!” He was too strong for Andrew to get him off of.

“Go…” Andrew managed to say despite the lack of air, sliding his pistol towards Tom. “Right now…”

“Not a chance.” Tom took the pistol, but also drew out his dagger. Herbert was too wild right now to notice Andrew was talking to Tom, or that Tom even existed, right now. He could kill the guy right now…

“You promised…not to play…the game…keep both, or no guarantee…to keeping…other…”

“I keep my promises,” Tom sadly admitted as he walked off. “I’ll get Candace for you. I promise.”

“Sir?” a soldier reported in. “Mr. Kallen…the bus driver said something strange. One of the students, a Ronald Kent, tried opening a window before falling asleep, as if he knew was going on.”

“Ronald Kent? That sounds familiar…” the manager of Battle Royale admitted. “Hm, I remember now.” He laughed. “Strange how fate works, doesn’t it?”

Ronald Kent was the champion of Battle Royale last year.

Chapter 5: Unleashing a Killer

“Well, I’m disappointed. We’ve hit the afternoon, and only four kills? Come on,” Mr. Kallen’s voice rang over the PA system. “The deaths, in order, are Garth, Kenneth, Larry, and Andrew. Keep on going, or you’ll run out of food before the thing’s over! The new danger zones are…”

Mona looked at Ron, whose eyes were going back and forth, as if watching for anyone coming after them. The gun in his hands only frightened her more. “There’s something about Ron…why is he so…?”

“I know, I look like I’m a professional, don’t I?” Ron admitted. “What do you expect from last year’s Battle Royale victor?”

“You’re what?” Mona was backing away now.

“Calm down…he doesn’t want it to go down the same way this time,” Candace reassured. “Maybe if you drop the gun, she’ll feel better.” Her cousin nodded, slowly putting his gun to the ground but keeping near it. “He’s still suspicious, though.”

Harold was getting Eve out of the warehouse now. She did whatever she was asked to, vaguely recalling the past…

Eve was eight years old back then. As she walked back home from elementary school, skipping and laughing, she saw a few kids from the high school hanging out in an alley. She saw them every day there, and usually ignored them, even their smoking, but there was someone else there that wasn’t before.

Turning into the alley, Eve caused the others to run away. One of them, the one she recognized, didn’t move. Instead, he dropped to the ground. Eve cried. It was her brother…”Brother, what’s happening? What happened? Wake up…wake up, brother…” Replaying this in her mind, Eve had tears sliding down her face.

As Tom ran on, he played back the strangling of his best friend by someone who he probably would’ve trusted not to. It was unbearable to watch over and over, but he couldn’t get it out of his mind. Stopping, Tom collapsed, crying. “Andrew…you had to go down with some stupid heroism…now I’ve got…no one…” He shook his head.

“No, I’ve got…I’ve got Candace to look after. Not alone yet,” Tom muttered, continuing on. “I’ve going to find you, no matter how much you’re afraid that I’m after your blood! Because I promised my friend that I would…”

Some distance behind him, Herbert had finished strangling Andrew. “Nothing’s going to stop my life…nothing. Because I have a promise to keep, and Battle Royale isn’t going to fuck it all up.”

“Herbert…come closer…” His father had whispered as he lied down on the hospital bed, stretched out. He was dying. “Promise me…promise me that you’ll help give the family the medal that I never won it…”

“Don’t worry dad…I’ll become the fastest runner ever, and I’ll be the fastest forever…”

“Heya, Herbert.” Looking up, Herbert saw Robert. “You killed him?”

“Stay back,” Herbert warned, feeling pathetic as he held up his rubber chicken to defense himself against the brass knuckles Rob wore. The maniac laughed. “What’s so funny?”

“Nothing…it’s not like I’m going to hurt you,” Robert answered. “Come on, let me help you kill people…you know, it’s pretty neat…we’re stranded on an island where, well, we’re encouraged…encouraged to kill our classmates, and there’s nothing wrong about it…and there’s no punishments…”

“Robert? Robert, what the hell are you doing? You said-“ Herbert would never finish that sentence, as at that moment, a brass knuckle came flying straight into his face, cracking his skull. The track runner flew a few feet before lying down on the ground, corpse spread out.

“Damn, that was fun…” Robert hissed as he walked over to survey the dead body. Out of curiosity, he stepped on the fractured skull. There was a sickening crunch. Kicking the body, Robert laughed. “Hell, this is going to be fucking awesome! By the time I’m done, the devil’s gonna be bowing down to his new master!”

Chapter 6: Meetings

“I hate this game,” Tom muttered as he walked on the island. “Nothing…nothing to gain. It’s all so pointless…and all it does is bring pain. If I do get out of this, I’ll never forget…but at least that means I don’t forget my promise, right?” He was walking through the forest, which seemed to cover most of the island.

“Hey, who’s there?” he asked as he heard twigs snapping. Turing around, he saw Dan with an army knife. “Oh, hey Dan…how’s it going? Where’s Larry?” When a tear slid down the guitar player’s face, Tom took a step back. “You didn’t. Tell me you didn’t.” His dagger was gripped tightly in his hand now.

“Sorry, man.” Dan tossed the knife at Tom, who did the same with his dagger while taking a step back. Tom tripped over a tree root, causing him to fall and roll down the slope the forest fell into, letting the knife fly far above him. However, the dagger flew straight into Dan’s shoulder. The pain was agonizing as the would-be rock star pulled it out, the blood spraying all over the ground.

Lying down against a tree, Dan moaned. “Ah, damn it…that hurts…oh, damn…SHIT!” He wasn’t good with pain. “FUCK!” The blood was flowing freely, and moving his arm gave off unbearable pain, making it impossible for him to reach into his bag for First-Aid. “Larry, if you’re watching, get a miracle to happen…” His eyes were closed, teeth clenched, his entire body shaking. This was hell.

Rolling down, Tom eventually stopped at someone’s heels. “Get up.” Looking up, Tom saw a face that brought both bad news and good news at the same time. The bad news was that it was one of the people he was afraid of most in this competition. The good news was that Candace wouldn’t be too far enough.

“Hey.”

“Hey.” Raven walked into the old building, having found Eric inside. “What are you doing?”

“I’ve got to admit…I have no idea,” Eric confessed. “I’ve got a pistol, but this is retarded…a shootout to the end? Not even I’m going to live through it. Sexiness is a good shield against most things but bullets isn’t one of them. What’s your weapon?”

“Some detonation device,” Raven answered. “I don’t think it works, though…wherever the actual bomb or whatever is, it’s damaged…” Eric’s face lit up. “Hey, what’s your problem?”

“Heh, Raven…remember that time I accidentally gave myself some burns? And that other time I caused a little bang?” Eric reminded. “Those were some good times, huh?”

“Ah…Eric, you feeling okay? What are you trying to say?” Raven asked. “Maybe the pressure’s just making you crack…maybe you need to rest.” Eric was laughing now.

“Hey, Raven, what do you say about finding that bomb and fixing it? There’s some supplies here…and from there, give Mr. Kallen a little surprise?”

“Are you saying…”

“Yeah, let’s have what will be known as the last competition go out as a bang!”

Chapter 7: Coming Together

“She’s in a group,” Sean told Joe. “With…Candace, Ron, and…weird, Tom came flying right in, like someone accelerated his speed…”

“He probably just rolled down a slope.” Joe was a lot smarter then Sean had thought. He was beginning to have respect for the person who once bullied him everyday. Sean felt like the dumb one, now.

“Hey…Joe?”

“What’s up?”

“If we all get out of this thing…how are things going to end up, back in school?” Sean asked. Joe shook his head. “What’s the matter?”

“Like I said, we’re not playing one of your videogames. Everything doesn’t work out in the end, you know? If we get out, we’re not going back to school. We’re going to hideout in some damn Middle Eastern country or something…you’re supposed to be smart, not me. You think for a moment, alright?” Joe asked. Sean knew Joe was right.

“But…”

“Alright, if things somehow worked out so we all went back to school, I’d probably stop bullying you. Maybe,” Joe added, laughing and playfully elbowing Sean.

“Hey, why are you so smart in this stuff?” Sean asked. Joe just started walking a bit faster, remembering how he pretty much grew up in the streets.

“Hey, bro, where are you taking me?” he asked as a third grader, like always. Usually it was to a street fight, where’d Joe would watch and his brother would stop every now and then, teaching Joe something. But they weren’t going their usual route…

Half an hour later, they were running as soon as a kid in his class, Eve, had seen them. “Why’s the other guy taking a nap, and why are we running?” Joe had asked. His brother had told him to shut up. The next morning, Joe’s brother was gone, and he wasn’t told why. His parents never told him. He just sort of worked it out himself eventually.

“So…Ron…” Tom started, not knowing what to say. “What’s up?”

“Don’t talk, don’t move,” Ron ordered him, pistol pointing at Tom. He wasn’t in a good mood, it seemed. “I won’t hesitate to shoot.” This guy meant business.

“Hey, Tom,” Mona shyly greeted as she came from behind a tree. The quiet but still pretty popular girl most people had a crush on sooner or later. Tom had gotten over his time a year ago.

“Oh, hey M-“

“I said don’t talk!” Ron interrupted, kicking Tom in the shoulder. Damn, the guy should be playing soccer. Better yet, he could replace the damn gym teacher they had, the fat ass who acted like he invented every sport while he hovered over them, the big tub of lard…

“But-“

“Don’t talk!” Shit, he was worse then the fat ass. And in better shape.

Chapter 8: Shattered Hope

“Hey, come on!” Mike laughed as he and Joe were over at Okami’s desk. “Let’s see those shoes you have.”

“No…shoes…look at…” Okami stammered.

“Speak right English, damn it!” Mike pushed Okami out of his chair, knocking his glasses off. Most of the class laughed as Okami desperately tried finding his glasses, crying. He wanted to go back home…he wanted to live in Japan again. His parents gave him great stories of America…but it was nothing like what he heard, this place. Okami never seemed to realize the stories were before the elections sometime in 2000 or so.

As he ran through the bushes, Okami wanted to cry, not knowing why these memories were coming back to him. He had his bulletproof vest on, of course…

“I’ve got it!” Peter announced. Barry and Wallace looked at him, grateful. “Now…what do you want first? Let’s get rid of these collars…” He pressed a few keys, and there was a small, low shock administered on their necks. “I think I just deactivated their abilities to explode…now let’s remove surveillance, alright? Hm…this might be tricky.” As he continued to work, Wallace looked at Barry.

Curious at what exactly a computer hacking looked like, Barry got up to walk over to where Peter was. Wallace held his shotgun up, stopping Barry. “Stay back!”

“What are you doing?” Barry asked.

“I see, now talk, now that your plan is falling apart and you’re nervous!” Wallace was shaking, his shotgun pointed at Barry’s chest but always moving off target. “Get away from us! I know what you want to do!”

“Wallace, what are you doing?” Peter cried. “Barry’s not doing anything!”

“HE’S PLAYING THE GAME! HE’S BEEN TURNED INTO A KILLER!” Wallace screamed. “He wants us to die! I understand what’s going on, he wants us dead! He’s going to kill us! He-“ Wallace and Barry didn’t hear the rest of the sentence as there was a sickening crunch from behind them.

Both turning around, they became paralyzed as their gazes were transfixed at Peter’s dead body. He had the expression of joy he had before, disabling the collar system, but mixed in with the shock Wallace had caused and the moment of agonizing pain he had endured. It created a grotesque expression, not helped by the fact that his head now seemed to be dented as a gash opened on the side, blood gushing out of it.

They turned their attention upwards right after Robert’s foot stepped on Peter’s skull, driving the broken bones into the hard ground of the gas station, creating a sickening sound that nearly made the friends drop their weapons.

“You bastard!” Wallace shouted. “He was our one way out of this island!”

“There’s no way out of this island, Wally,” Rob argued, “but killing.” He threw a punch at Wallace, which sent him flying back into Barry. Wallace was dead now, his forehead being smashed directly into his brain. As Barry struggled to get the dead body off of him, Robert picked up the shotgun.

“You’re insane. You’ve screwed us all over,” Barry moaned.

“Except me,” Robert laughed, aiming. He was a natural marksman, perfectly calm despite the scenes he had created today. “Haven’t heard you talk really until today, you know. Too bad that mouth’s not going to have much more come out of it.”

“You’re going to hell with me!” As Barry threw the dagger, Robert jumped to the side. When the dagger clanged against the metal wall of the gas station, Barry knew there was no hope for him while Robert advanced with the shotgun aimed.

“In about seventy years, though.” When the gun was fired, the bullets spread by the shotgun all impacted on Barry’s chest. As the gun’s wounds had blood pouring out, Barry died, two of the shots puncturing his lungs while another found his heart. Robert loved the sight, imaging the agony his victims must have felt.

Walking over to where the dagger was, Rob grabbed it, turning his attention to the laptop. “In case Pete left any programs running…” He destroyed the computer.

Chapter 9: Not Going to Lose

“I’m serious!” Tom screamed, “I’m not playing the game!”

“Not playing?” Ron laughed. “Well then, where’s that friend you have around you all the time, Andrew? What happened to him? You killed him, didn’t you?”

“No, I didn’t! That bastard Herbert did…” Tom answered.

“Well, you murdered Herbert, then, didn’t you?” Ron pointed out, kicking Tom again. “I’m not taking any chances with anyone that might be da-“ He stopped as a dull electric shock went through his body as it did for everyone else’s. It didn’t harm him, but surprised him enough so that he’d drop his gun.

“That’s odd,” Ron muttered, thinking for a moment. “That didn’t happen before…” He seemed to be growing sort of, well, happy, if the ruthless student could be called that. Picking up his gun again, Ron continued pointing it at Tom. “Anyway, you’re going down.”

“That’s enough!” Candace yelled from behind a tree, coming out. “If he was really playing the game, don’t you think he would’ve hit you when you dropped the gun, Ron?” Candace…good, he could keep his promise, now.

Ron sighed, not dropping the gun but just no longer aiming it straight at Tom’s forehead. “Fine, get up, kid. But Candace, how are you supposed to know what he thinks in that mind of his? You can’t trust anyone in this thing.”

“Thanks, Candace,” Tom sighed as he got up, picking up his pistol and aiming at Ron. “Now, you get the hell away from Mona and your cousin!” He was shaking while doing so, not really intending to shoot Ron.

Ron laughed. “You don’t have the guts. It takes something you don’t have to shoot a gun, and it also means you have to throw something away you know right now. Drop that thing down. It’s never going to happen to me.” Tom gave up, dropping it. “But what was that for?” Candace’s cousin raised his pistol. “I’ll give you five seconds to explain.”

“Andrew made me promise to protect Candace,” Tom quickly explained, “and I keep my promises.” Ron nodded, putting his gun away but not before examining both of their pistols. Seems like they were all semi-automatic like last year, which was always useful.

“Andrew?” Candace asked. Tom nodded. “Before he died? Oh, that’s horrible…” Mona just stood there, not saying anything. “I’m sorry; I know that he’s your friend…”

“I’ll only be sorry if I can’t keep my promise to him, since he died hoping that I would keep it,” Tom answered. “Sorry, Candace, but I don’t trust your cousin enough to consider him safe for you.”

“Go on, kid.” Ron was interested in what he had to say.

“I saw you on the bus. You were trying to open up a window. You seemed to know everything in that classroom. You talk like you’re all that, like you’ve already been through this fucked up game,” Tom continued. “I think you’ve been through this, liked it, and wanted to play again, so that’s why you transferred here. You got lucky, got into the next class, and want to kill all over again!” Ron gave a short laugh.

“It’s all right, Tommy, except that last part,” Ron replied. “I won last year, but I’m not playing again so that I can come out the champion again. No, this year, I think I want to help everyone get out, and get my payback.” Tom decided not to ask what that last part meant by Candace and Mona’s confused faces when they heard that also. He didn’t want to tell, I guess.

“But you said that there’s no way to tell what everyone is thinking,” Tom argued. Ron cracked his neck.

“If I told you there was a way out of this hellhole, would you trust me?” Ron asked.

“Maybe.”

“You’re a smart guy. Come on, I’ll explain it to you while we find others that didn’t go nuts and start the game.”

As Dan moaned as he felt the blinding, intense pain of moving his arm. He was trying to bandage it with the First-Aid kit in his bag, but he felt as if his shoulder was slowly being roasted by an increasingly hot but small, precise, flame. “Ah…damn it…that HURTS!”

“Want me to help?” a voice asked behind him. Before Dan could turn around, a dagger slit his throat. Gurgling blood, Dan died as Robert stepped out from behind the tree Dan was lying on. “Idiot…he made way too much noise.” Robert liked the way things were going. Two daggers, a shotgun, and five kills. But it still wasn’t enough for him.

“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?” Eve sighed as she and Harold stopped at a cliff to camp out for the night. It was sunset, and their daylight was fading as the shades of orange were reflected in the clear, blue ocean. It was hard to believe that they were in the middle of a bloodthirsty competition. “It’s so nice…what does it make you think of?”

There was a rustling in the bushes from behind them. “Blood, just blood,” Harold answered as he picked up his pistol to go look at what was going on.

Chapter 10: Only One

Harold waited for whoever was in the bushes to come out. Stumbling and tripping, with a twig in his hair and his bag around his bulletproof vest which he was wearing, Okami came out of the forest. “Hey, Okami, come with us…” Eve sighed. Both of them knew that Okami was probably the smallest threat out of their entire class.

“Just be careful,” Eve warned. “There’s a cliff here, and it’s a bad fall…are you okay?” Harold and Eve took a good look at Okami. All you could see in his face and eyes were absolute fear, with tears trailing everywhere, as if he was begging for mercy from some punishment.

“It’s alright, man,” Harold reassured. “Don’t worry, we’re not going to kill you…here, we’re going to eat some dinner right now. Want some of my stuff? It’s some clam chowder, and it’s not bad.” He handed Okami a can of soup as a noise sounded all over the island. It was the PA system again.

“Well, maybe you’re not as bad as I thought,” Mr. Kallen laughed over the announcements. “We’re down to 16 people now as the first day ends, and maybe we won’t have to end everything with a mass collar explosion, which has never been needed before. So, the casualties from where we last left off, in order, are…Herbert, Peter, Wallace, Barry, and Dan! New danger zones are…” Harold shuddered, wondering what suddenly drove the outburst of five more kills. Some of their classmates could be bitches at times, but not many seemed like they’d kill…

Then something struck all three of them. “Peter…” Eve whispered. “He was our way out…he could’ve found a way to hack our way out…” She was beginning to cry, and Harold decided to find a way to cheer her up, by remembering better times.

“Yeah…remember that time where he put some “adult” websites on the principal’s webpage on the school site?” Harold reminded her. Eve laughed, knowing what he was talking about. For about two hours, the principal had a red face as he struggled to get it off. Then, as he took a trip to the bathroom, Peter decided to be nice and remove it.

“But he’s dead now…” Eve sighed.

“And remember, fellows, only one makes it out of this thing!” Mr. Kallen ended off. Okami was curled up into a ball, rocking back and forth, letting the words echo in his mind over and over. He knew enough English to know what was going on. Only one…only one…only one…

“Well, I’m going to take a piss,” Harold decided, walking towards the bushes. Eve looked back towards the ocean as Okami’s stare was fixed on Harold’s pistol. Only one…only one… He missed Japan, where he wasn’t a loser. He had lots of friends there, and nobody teased him. But here, there were no friends, no comrades, only people that would get nice to see and stab you in the back so they’d live. Literally. Only one…

“Damn, I really needed that,” Harold muttered as he came back. “After holding something in that long, letting it out feels so gr- Okami, oh god no…”

“What’s wrong?” Eve asked as she turned around, looking at what Okami was staring at. She let off a small scream before running over to Harold. “Harold, is he…?”

“What’s up with you, man?” Harold asked. “Okami, what the hell? What the hell, man?” Okami’s expression was that of pure desperation and fear mixed together into insanity. His legs were shaking as he grabbed Harold’s pistol, holding it and pointing it at them. “Eve, stay back. That thing’s a semi-automatic…he can keep firing until it’s out of ammo!”

“Only one…only one…” Okami was mumbling.

“Okami, drop the gun! We don’t want to hurt you!” Harold yelled. The kid was rabid now. “We’re not going to hurt you! PUT THE FUCKING THING DOWN ALREADY!” Okami shook his head.

“N-no…no two…no three…only one…”

“Come on, you know enough English to understand me, right?” Harold asked. “Okami, if you do this thing solo, you’re never going to survive! No one can handle this thing alone! SNAP OUT OF IT!”

“No solo…no win…no one?” Okami stammered.

“Yes!” Harold felt relieved. “We can do this thing together, not by ourselves!”

“Together…not one?”

“Yes, toge-“ Out from behind them, Michael came out of the bushes, running by himself. He was a nice guy at heart, but always teased Okami. “Mike? Oh hell no…MIKE, GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE! HE’S NOT STABLE!”

Tensing, Okami held the gun up straight, aiming it towards Michael. Something going loose inside of him, Okami fired the gun as fast as it could go, screaming, “ONLY ONE! ONLY ONE! ONLY ONE! ONLY ONE!!!!!!!” Harold had grabbed Eve and took them both out of the way. Okami’s aim was poor, but one of the bullets managed to pierce Mike’s kneecap.

“HOLY SHIT IT FUCKING HURTS!” Mike screamed as he fell down, thrashing around as his hands wrapped around his leg. Okami had stopped firing as soon as the bullet had hit, coming out of his rampage. “SHIT!”

“Mike, you okay, man? Mike, just calm down!” Harold advised as he got out his First-Aid Kit, checking the wound. He had gotten into street fights protecting Eve before and knew how to help a person in need. “Damn, that’s pretty bad…just hold in there!” Eve turned to Okami, who was in tears, now. Something inside of her broke loose, too.

“YOU SEE WHAT YOU’VE DONE, OKAMI?! YOU SEE THIS?! THIS IS WHY WE DON’T PLAY THE GAME!” Eve shouted. “THIS ISN’T REALLY A GAME! THERE’S NO DO OVERS, NO TAKEBACKS, NO ONE WINS! THAT’S THEIR DIRTY SECRET THAT THEY KEEP TO THEMSELVES! NO ONE WINS!” Okami stared at her, horrified.

“No…no one…no win…I can…myself…by self…one win…solo…alone…”

Okami was back in Japan, playing with the birds before going studying. A girl he liked came up to him, and (in Japanese) asked, “What are you doing, Okami?”

“We’re not the only people here…the birds are people, too, you know! Make them happy, feed them, help them, too, not just us!”

“That’s sweet of you…” she had told him.

“It’s so interesting…did you know that while they fly together, they do it in that V formation, so that the birds in the back get a little boost of wind from the birds in the front to make it easier?” Okami informed her. “They take turns in the front, to help each other out…”

“That’s pretty cool. Well, see you in class tomorrow, Okami!” As she walked off, Okami looked at her hair, which was in a ponytail. The wind made it seem as if it was waving to him. He waved back.

Okami looked at the three people in front of him. Eve staring at him, terrified, as Harold helped Michael. “It’s bleeding!” Harold was wrapping bandage around the knee, now. “Just take deep breaths...I know it hurts, and it’s hard to do, but it’ll help…”

“Ah…thanks…man…” Mike managed to say. Tears rolled down Okami’s face. He was alone, here. No one to help him, and to take turns helping each other, with. All his friends…they were back there in Japan. Here, he was alone, and solo. No one could survive solo.

“Hey, what’s…what’s Okami…doing?” Mike grunted. Harold and Eve watched as Okami backed up, still crying. He kept on walking until he hit the edge of the cliff.

“I…alone…can’t do it…no solo…no life...no killing…death…no win…” Okami took off his bulletproof vest, tossing it to them. “Hope…none…”

“Okami, you don’t have to do this,” Harold warned. “We can still work together, right? You freaked out, you shoot Mike, but don’t worry. This thing’s a mind game; it happens. We can still work together, right?” He waited for an answer. “OKAMI, DON’T DO THIS! WE CAN FIND A WAY OFF THE ISLAND!”

“No friends…solo…only one…one wins…only one…” Okami answered, with a teary smile. He looked straight into Dan’s eyes. “Only one…” Thinking of the girl whose ponytail had waved to him, he let himself fall, leaving his troubles behind.

“OKAMI!” they had all screamed as he fell down. Eve and Harold rushed over to see what become of his body. Where it had impacted against the ground, the force had caused Okami’s body to snap in half, letting his organs fall upon the land. The tide was coming closer in, ready to wash his body and organs into the ocean. The smile Okami had given Harold was still on his face. Two tears, one each from Eve and Harold, gracefully plopped on the body.

Eve began to cry uncontrollably and freely into Harold’s shoulder as Mike tried avoiding showing any regret or grief he had, failing to do so. Harold looked back at the spot Okami had fallen, the words still in his head. Only one wins…

Chapter 11: Soulless

“Sir, the tenth student has been eliminated,” a soldier reported. Mr. Kallen gestured for him to go on. “It was the foreign exchange student, Okami Tamashii.” The manager of Battle Royale broke out laughing.

“Okay, I know one of you retards betted on him, didn’t you?! Well?!” One of the soldiers sheepishly raised their hands. “Idiot! He had no chance…no, if you ask me, it’s either going to be Ron or Rob. Both cold-hearted killers with no souls, right?”

“Sir, if you would like to know, before committing suicide, Okami presumably damaged Mike, by how we know Harold and Eve ran to his side, probably with Harold’s semi-automatic pistol,” the soldier informed his boss. “Michael did not die, however.”

“That’s interesting…Okami must’ve went psychotic, then,” Mr. Kallen assumed. “Hm…well, get back to work!”

“Hey, are you sure you know what you’re doing?” Raven asked Eric, who nodded. “What are you doing, anyway?”

“Getting some supplies…you know, for the bomb, wherever it is. To fix the thing,” Eric explained. “This old building has a lot of stuff we can find useful…just keep watch outside, okay? Do you want my pistol?”

“No, keep it…there’s two exits,” Raven replied, walking outside. “Keep the detonation thing with you, too.” He trusted Eric not to shoot him, also. They were friends, Eric was an awesome guy, and everyone knew that. Friends don’t turn their back on each other, no matter what. Besides, Eric hated being ordered around, even by Battle Royale managers. They’d regret picking their class. I mean, come on, Eric was in it.

As he walked around outside, making sure it was clear, a twig was heard snapping. Whirling around, Raven felt dumb as she asked, “Who’s there?” She was backing up, now, but that meant she’d be walking further away from the building, damn it…

Please, let it be a friend… Raven prayed. Someone came out of the forest, in the shadows. The moonlight allowed her to see his face, and the dagger he held. Her stomach twisted in a knot. “…Robert?” The dagger slashed across her face, particularly her chin.

As blood flowed down from her chin, Raven gasped for air as she was consumed by blinding pain. “Bast…ard…” It hurt to talk. “Playing…the game…Eric…plan…escape…you…no soul…”

“No escape but killing.” Robert laughed as he put on his brass knuckles, crushing her skull. Stepping on the fractured bones, Robert looked straight ahead into the building. “Eric, huh? Let’s check on his body, now…”

“Heh, I still got it!” Eric laughed as he worked on creating replaceable parts. He had already deduced the most likely location for the detonator, as well. “Damn, now I’m good, aren’t I?”

“Good girl…” No girl said no to Eric, including parts for a bomb. “Now, let’s s-“ He was cut off by the sound of a gunshot. Turning around, holding his pistol in one hand and bomb parts in another with the detonation device in his pocket, Eric saw Robert.

“YOU FUCKING BASTARD!” Eric shouted. “YOU KILLED RAVEN, DIDN’T YOU?!” Robert only smiled, laughing as he shot his gun. “HOLY SHIT!” He ran behind pillars, letting the bullets clash against metal, Robert firing off without a care in the world. There was that other exit, and it was covered…Eric ran out of it, carrying all his equipment with him.

“Fuck…well, I’ll get him later,” Robert sighed.

Chapter 12: Day 2

“Hey, Harriet, wake up, okay?” Jack whispered in her year. She yawned, stretching herself. “Damn, you fell asleep before sunset. You missed the second death announcements…”

“What? Oh, sorry…hey, who died?” Harriet asked.

“There was Herbert, Barry, Wallace, Dan I think, and um…” Jack found it hard to say.

“Spit it out, Jack!”

“…he’s…well, Peter’s dead,” Jack confessed. “Peter!”

“He was our way out,” Harriet muttered. “Him and his hacking skills…”

“Why the fuck did he have to go,” Jack groaned.

As they went through their normal routine, keeping watch in the cave, Harriet kept looking at Jack. Look at him…so calm…why is he so calm?! What is he thinking about? It’s like he’s absolutely sure I won’t kill him…wait, maybe… She was staring at his gun.

Maybe…he plans to finish me off! No, I’ve got a life to live! Well, he can’t finish me off…he can’t finish me off if…

“If I finish you off first!” Harriet yelled, wildly tossing her rock as Jack turned around. It was a horrible throw, sailing up to the roof of the cave, when Jack realized they weren’t in a cave at all. It was a small hideout made to look like one, but it couldn’t be, since the room was made out of…

As the rock pierced the glass roof, shards came flying down. One of the fragments pierced Jack’s eye. “WHAT THE FUCK?! AH, GOD!!!!” Jack screamed as he pulled it out of his left eye, blood pouring out of it. He pointed his gun at Harriet, but had trouble focusing with the blood coming out of his left eye. “Shit! WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING THIS?! HARRIET?! HARRIET?!”

Harriet stood there, trembling without a weapon. “I’M NOT GOING TO DIE! YOU’RE NOT GOING TO KILL ME!”

“Don’t make me do this,” Jack pleaded. “Please…” Harriet leaped at him. “DAMN YOU! DAMN YOU FOR ALL THIS FUCKING SHIT YOU PULLED!” He shot his pistol point-blank, right before Harriet was about to make contact with him. Blood splattered from Harriet’s body everywhere as it stained the room and Jack’s clothing.

Wiping blood from his eye, Jack took a last look at Harriet before taking his bag and leaving. Holding onto his gun firmly, he thought about his new objective. A new day…a new mission…a new person. He wandered into the forest.

Chapter 13: An Odd Team

As they traveled through the thick forest, Ron stayed alert as he held up his pistol. Mona, Candace, and Tom followed him. “Where are we going?” Tom asked, just realizing he’d been traveling with no idea this whole time.

“Shut up,” Ron answered. Mona and Candace apparently didn’t know, either.

“But-“

“I said shut up.” Ron turned around, tripping Tom and pointing his gun at him once again. He looked at Candace’s face and sighed, turning around again. Mona just watched.

“You okay?” Candace asked as she helped Tom up.

“Yeah…but your cousin, he’s a psycho, you know?” Tom told her.

“He’s the psycho who knows how to survive this game,” Candace reminded him. “He can save your life, you know.”

“He said he’d explain,” Tom muttered.

“Yeah…I don’t think he means it,” Candace sighed. “He wants us to get off this island, though, and I think he has a plan. He just doesn’t want us to screw it up, so he doesn’t tell us it…”

“You three, stay here,” Ron ordered. “I’m going to search the area…rest, and keep your guard up. And Tom…” He grabbed him by his shirt. “If I get back here, and I see you making a move on my cousin, I won’t be afraid to remind myself about what killing is like.” He tossed Tom down, walking on.

“Damn, I’m going to get tired of being tossed around like that,” Tom complained. “Why does he hate me so much, anyway?”

“He’s just serious, you know,” Candace answered as they sat down.

“Why does he want to help us and not go crazy on everyone else like last year?” Tom asked. Candace shook her head.

“I don’t know…partially because I’m his cousin, but I think he might’ve just killed everyone for me, and then shot himself. I think he’s trying to think of a way…a way to win, for some reason. He wants to win, I can tell that, but he wants us to get off safely…” They were quiet for a minute or two.

“So…Andrew?” Candace asked.

“He’s been crushing on you for a while, now,” Tom explained, feeling she had a right to know. “He wanted me to protect you.”

“That was nice of him…and you’re following through?” Tom nodded. “That’s cool of you…” They heard a movement through the forest. Coming from behind a tree was Ron, with a look of shook and worry on his face. The other three calmed down. “You scared…us…” Their eyes opened wide.

Behind Ron was someone else with a gun pointed to his head. “You want him to die? I don’t think so,” the person whispered.

Chapter 14: Eric

Damn, where to begin…how should I describe my life? Well, the best I can do is that it’s perfect. Absolutely perfect. Everyone’s my friend, I’ve got the looks, I’m tough enough to beat up most people, and I rule in sports. My grades are awesome, I can fix or make anything, and you know what? My parents are pretty cool and rich. I can keep a relationship as long as I want, play any instrument, and I rule in videogames, especially anything Halo. How could I not be perfect, though?

I’m Eric.

With barely any time left, Eric looked at the soccer ball and goalie. If he got this penalty kick in, they’d win. He wasn’t worried at all. He was Eric, after all. Giving the goalie a cocky smile that made him want to run up to Eric and punch him, Eric listened to the sound of the cheerleaders screaming. Taking a few steps back, he ran forth and kicked the ball.

“GOAL!!!!” the announce screamed as his teammates, friends, and cheerleaders all crowded over him.

“Amateur,” Eric laughed, talking about the goalie as he let everyone rush for him. Why wouldn’t they? It was understandable…come on, he was Eric.

“Okay, just relax, man…you know where the bomb is, you’ve got the stuff to fix it,” Eric muttered. “Come on…Raven’s dead, but don’t worry…things happen…and it doesn’t effect the objective…come on, you know crying gets you know where…” Eric shook his head, taking deep breaths as he looked around the house he was taking shelter in. He was losing it.

“Come on, current plan…what you want to do…ah, who am I kidding!” Eric chucked a pipe he had at the door. “It’s hopeless! There’s no way I can bomb the school! I might as well die!” He thought about Robert, and how he killed Raven. How he laughed while he was shooting…that made some things come together.

“Damn you, Rob…you’ve been killing everyone, haven’t you?” Eric mumbled. “You’re confident…maybe more then me, and that’s saying something. I’ll beat you at it, though.” He took out the detonation device, looking at it before putting it back. Eric turned his head towards the car keys on the table of the house. It had a garage…

“This one’s for all the students that got killed and need revenge. Rob, you better watch out. I’m hunting you down now!”

Chapter 15: Escape

“You call that a plan?” Tom whispered. He, Mona, Candace, and Ron were forced to sit down as Jack rummaged through their bags for supplies. None of them would admit that they didn’t think Jack as the type to play the game, but he did, and he beat Ron at it.

“Look, do you want to live or not?” Ron sighed. “Because if you don’t, I’ll be glad to snap your neck right now for you…”

“Just do what he said, okay?” Candace pleaded. Tom gave up, hanging his head in defeat. He nodded. He still thought it was a retarded idea, though.

“Hey, Jack?” Tom started.

“Yeah, what is it?”

“I got to take a leak…”

“In your own pants,” came the answer.

“Ah, come on! Just let me take a piss over there, behind that tree, okay?” Tom begged. “That’s all I’m asking from you!”

“…fine. Go ahead, but go too far, and I’ll shoot you,” Jack warned. Tom got up and walked to where he was supposed to, pretending to reach for his zipper. Looking back before taking the next step, Tom made a run for it. “Hey!” Jack heard the snapping twigs and turned to where Tom was, but he was gone. Turning to the others, he saw Candace and Mona had made a break for it, too.

“Damn it!” Then he noticed Ron was gone. Turning around with his gun raised, Jack found Ron pointing a pistol at him as well. “So…how ‘bout them Dodgers?” Ron merely laughed.

Chapter 16: Breakdowns

Mona had panicked and ran the wrong direction, afraid she’d get caught going the other way for some reason. She had separated herself and was crying as she ran through the forest. As she came into the clearing, she stopped. There was someone else there, with his or her back turned against her.

Turning around, the person showed his face. It was John. “H-hey, John…” His face showed fear and desperation in it, making a wild expression. “John? What’s wrong? John?”

“S-S-Stay back!” he warned. He had a gun. “Back from me! Don’t come any closer!”

This won’t be easy, Mona thought. He’s broken down…

“So…” Tom muttered.

“So…” Candace answered. “What now?”

“Damn, I think he forgot to tell us that…come on, let’s check the map,” Tom suggested. “Hm…any idea where our next destination was supposed to be?”

“Not a clue…wow, there’s more buildings then I thought, here. At least three houses…”

“Okay, so we’ve got no idea where to go, and we’ll get killed if we go back…come on, let’s get to one of the houses,” Tom decided.

“Why?”

“I have Andrew’s pistol, because Jack forgot to take it, right? Well, that’s more useful when we have a car to run over people with if it misses,” Tom answered. “Don’t give me that look…I’m not playing the game.” He stared at the direction where the closest house would be.

“I’m not breaking down, and I’m not going insane. I’m keeping you safe for my best friend and your cousin.”

“I can keep myself safe, you know,” Candace reminded him.

“I know. But I still have a promise.”

Chapter 17: Saved by Perfection

“It’s an entire town,” Eve whispered as they managed to enter the area, having traveled the whole morning. She helped support Mike while Harold went ahead with his pistol, keeping his eye out for any others. He seemed to be going faster and faster, picking up the pace, leaving the other two behind. “Harold, could you slow down a moment? Mike’s a bit heavy to carry…”

“Hey, my knee’s busted and screwed up!” Mike argued. “And I have big bones and muscle, not heaviness…” Eve rolled her eyes as she struggled to keep up. “Come on, I can’t keep up for real!”

“We’re almost there,” Harold answered. “Just hold on, okay?” Eve didn’t believe she just heard that from Harold.

“What’s wrong?” she muttered to herself as they reached the center of the town. “Hey, what are these pipes and things doing here?” She had walked into a small house. Harold checked, knocking them off the table.

“Someone was here, but they’re gone, now. Doesn’t matter anymore, for now. Hey, get Mike on the bed, okay?” Harold picked up a mirror to look at an eye he had hit an a tree branch earlier that day. His eyes opened wide.

“Yo, Harold, what’s going on?” Mike asked as he got on the bed. “I can’t see from here.”

“GET DOWN, EVE!” Harold tackled her down as a hail of gunfire hit the wall and table. “Mike, roll off the bed!” As they took cover from the bullets, Harold began giving instructions. “Eve, take Mike and go out the backdoor into the next house. Run for it if you can.” He took his pistol, look out the window which was now shot open. It was Robert, wildly shooting as he turned the corner. Damn him.

Harold kicked the door open, walking outside. He held his pistol up, thinking, Can’t let him get to Eve…anyone but Eve… He whirled around, only to find Robert pointing a shotgun at him.

“Hey, how long has it been since we last talked, Harold?” Rob cheerfully greeted. “How’s Eve and your mom?”

“Shut up, Robert. You’ve been killing everyone, haven’t you?”

“Good job! What’s going to be your next brilliant discovery, Harold? The sky is blue?” Robert taunted. “Always slow, Harold…I wonder how you can get decent grades.”

“One word out of you, and I’ll fire!”

“Harold, come on. We both know that’s not going to happen.” Robert shook his head. “Have you ever killed someone? I don’t think so, judging by how you’re shaking. Have you ever seen someone die? Yeah, right…”

Harold opened his mouth, but nothing came out. He realized Robert had a point. He never killed anyone…but he saw Okami die. “Okami…” No one deserved to die here, did they? “No…never…” His arms were limply dangling to the sides, now, with the pistol there as well.

“Sucks for you.” As Robert was about to shoot his shotgun, a pipe came flying at him and knocked the gun out of his hands. “What the fuck?” There was the sound of a car behind them. “Shit!” Both dove for cover.

As Harold got up, there was Mike in the passenger’s seat and Eve in the back, but there was no driver. What was going on? “Hey, get out of here!” Eric’s voice shouted. “Keys are in the car. Go!” Harold needed nothing else to convince him. He jumped in, flooring it. They speeded out of the town.

Eric walked out from behind a corner, staring into Robert’s eyes. Both of them had a gun and wanted to take the other down. “It all ends here, you son of a bitch!”

Warning: Extreme hardcore badassness.

Chapter 18: Showdown

“Any questions?” Mr. Marcellus had asked. “No? Well, let’s proceed to…” As he droned on, turning back to the chalkboard, Larry gave Dan a paper airplane. Aiming, he threw it at Okami’s head. It curved at the last moment into Robert’s neck.

Immediately, before it could drop down, Robert turned around, crumpling the airplane into a piece of paper. Getting out of his chair, he walked to the back where Larry and Dan were. Everyone but Mr. Marcellus was watching. “You threw this at me?”

“What are you going to do about it?” Dan challenged.

“Hey, chill down. That was for someone else,” Larry added. Robert was turning back. “Yeah, that’s right,” Larry muttered to Dan. It made it to Robert’s ear. He turned around, smashing his right fist into Larry’s face. “Fuck!”

“WHAT IS GOING ON?!” Mr. Marcellus yelled.

“So, Eric, this is it, isn’t it? We’ve both got a good weapon to kill each other, and neither of us are green or whatever it is,” Robert chatted. “Want a smoke?”

“Sure. Go take them out.” Robert laughed.

“Nice try, but it’s not going to work.”

I need to get the bomb, Eric thought. How am I going to reach it? He was slowly backing away as Rob made advancements. Robert had a shotgun and needed to stay close up for an ideal shot. As they hit a corner, Eric made the run for it. Firing too late, Robert missed.

Taking the turn, Robert immediately jumped back. Eric had attempted to take a shot, and nearly made it, too. Damn, that kid was smart. Rob entered a house and went through the back to catch up. He saw Eric entering a room. Running, Robert took a shot at him. The door closed just in time.

“If this keeps up, I’ll be out of ammo,” Robert grumbled, realizing it. “Shit…” Standing there, he thought for a few seconds before remembering what he was supposed to be doing. Eric had gone inside the house, through another damn door, and continued running until he got gotten back to the street they were on. Firing two bullets at Robert, the second one would’ve hit if he hadn’t dodged at the last moment.

Following Eric, Robert took out a knife. He saw him nearing a car and threw it at him. Eric had been back pedaling and dived under the vehicle, letting the army knife clash against the metal. Rolling out, he scrambled back to his feet, getting into a warehouse. As he got in, Eric knew he wouldn’t be able to kill Robert in a straight shot. So he’d need a different tactic…

Finding his bomb, Eric ran for it. If he was tricky enough, he’d be able to lure Rob near him, drop it, and run out of the way before getting shot or blown up. It’d take a miracle, though. “Found you.” Grabbing the bomb, Eric dived out of the way. The warehouse had a group of cars and had a second room through a door he was right at.

“Where are you…” Robert mumbled, looking around. Eric was gone.

Crap, I missed the chance! I should’ve let it back there, gotten out of the warehouse, and blown him up! Eric thought. Oh shit, I panicked…and I failed…there’s no way I can be safe now…oh god no… He was losing it. Eric was sweating. Failed to bomb Robert…failed to beat him in a regular shootout…he snapped.

“AHAHAHAHA! YOU’VE RUN! YOU’RE NOT HERE! I BEAT YOU! YOU’RE GONE!” Insanity took him over. “I’M WIDE OPEN AND YOU’RE NOT HERE, ARE YOU!” He heard footsteps. “CAN’T CATCH ME, CAN YOU!” Eric ran up the stairs in the room to the roof. “I’M RIGHT HERE!”

“I know.” Eric turned around. Robert shot his shotgun as much as possible, unloading the bullets into his body, piercing various areas. Taking out his dagger, he slashed Eric once in the mouth and stomach.

“Gah!” Eric spat blood out of his mouth as he grabbed onto Robert, grappling and wrestling until he was knocked off the roof. I’m sunk… His organs were showing, including his intestines which were partially sticking out of him. Blood freely flowed from his body as pus oozed out of his body. It was a beautiful sight for Robert, who walked from the roof back out of the warehouse into the streets.

“That was a dumb move, Eric. You’re not as perfect as I thought,” Robert sighed. “But I have to hand it to you…you did better than anyone else. You know, if I wasn’t here, I would’ve been rooting for you. Betting everything I had on you, even. Before today, you were a god, perfection, Eric. But you’re dead. Too much perfection ruined you.” He readied his shotgun to fire.

Eric clenched his teeth as his hand strayed for the detonator. He wanted to be with his plan when he died. I’m sunk…I’m dead…he’s… Everything suddenly came back to him. He knew where the detonator was, and he noticed they were right in front of the bomb.

Come on…let me see your face when I blow you up…I hear everyone cheering for me. Eric, you’re the man! You’re the sexiest person I’ve ever made out with! You seriously rock! Teach me your moves, Eric! Eric! Eric gave a wide, cocky smile. The one that people would have to love or hate.

Hey, you all…you guys all rocked. Barry, I never got to know you, Wally, or Pete well, but you guys seemed pretty cool…and Larry, your and your friend rock…Raven, wonder why I never asked you out…Charlie…yeah, you’re pretty cool, too. Guess…guess it’s my turn…to show how cool I am. Eric was thinking about everyone that he knew had died.

“Eric…I just knew you’d go down smiling and laughing,” Robert remarked. “You think it’s funny…it is. I can’t wait to laugh when I can see your brains, right over that thing you used to smile with.” His finger was on the trigger now, tapping it.

“Y-yeah…I like…to laugh…”

“So, your death is funny, isn’t it?” Robert asked. Eric struggled but managed to shake his head. It hurt like hell.

“N-nah…our death is funny…” Eric replied. It was getting harder for him to concentrate, now. Robert suddenly realized what Eric had been carrying on the roof, and where it probably had dropped. He looked behind them. There was the…it must be a bomb. And Eric’s fingers were on the detonation device

“No…” Robert whispered. Eric kept that cocky smile up as he laughed, tears in his eyes. “MAKE IT STOP, RIGHT NOW!” Robert was experiencing something he hadn’t yet in the Battle Royale: fear. It made him panic, not realize that he should just shoot Eric right there, hoping that his hands wouldn’t push down the button. “STOP IT!”

Eric stopped laughing but kept the smile on his face as he closed his eyes. “Game over, mother fucker.”

The town became a fireball.

I find it sad how a lot of this is just a total rip-off of the original Battle Royale, though. Doing Battle Royale scenarios is interesting, but only if you do it originally.

Parallels between your fic and canon:

Winner from last year being in this year's class
One person who plays the game and plays it brutally well(more of a parallel in the movie version)
A group of idealistic pacifists who join with last year's winner
Many people cracking under the strain
A deserted town on the island

The first and third similarities are the most striking.

Chapter 19: Recount

“Sir, we have just received a report that a massive explosion took place in the deserted town after a detonator was set off,” a soldier reported to Mr. Kallen. He sprayed out the coffee he was drinking, smashing the mug. The soldier took a few steps back, startled by his boss’s reaction.

“What?! An explosion? These are kids! They’re supposed to be eating chocolate and playing the copy of Halo 2 they got for Christmas, not building bombs! What the fuck is wrong with this class?!” Mr. Kallen screamed. “I want to know who the hell was there!”

“There seems to have been five kids there, but three left before the explosion. The remaining two were an Eric and a Robert, apparently,” the soldier answered, backing further up into the wall, eyeing the shattered mug.

“Well, print me a new death sheet, alright?!” Mr. Kallen demanded.

“But, sir…it’s hard to tell, with the interference from the bomb, but one of them…one of them apparently survived. His pulse is incredibly weak, though,” the soldier informed him, slowly sliding to the ground, afraid of how the Battle Royale manager would react to this new piece of data.

“What?! These kids aren’t made out of metal, are they?!” Mr. Kallen yelled. “Next time, you’re going to tell me the one who set off the damn bomb took cuts from a dagger and point-blank shotgun shots, falling off a roof, before doing so!” He looked at the soldier for a distaste as he crouched down on the floor. “Well?! Survival or not?!” The soldier walked out for a few minutes before coming back.

“Here you go, sir.” Mr. Kallen laughed as he read the paper the soldier gave to him. “Sir?”

“This may be the best Battle Royale there ever was,” Mr. Kallen sighed. “You are dismissed.” As the soldier walked out, he made a mental note to find out what exactly was in that coffee Mr. Kallen was drinking. It made him a bit too edgy…

“What was that?” Mike asked as he sat in the car in the passenger’s seat, unable to turn around with his leg’s condition to find out what had caused the giant booming sound.

“It was…an explosion. Probably from the town,” Eve replied. “You don’t think…”

“Let’s just hope Robert died,” Harold muttered. The PA system was going off, again. “We’ll find out soon enough.”

“Students, there are no death zones this announcement! But we have 4 more people down. In order, Okami, Raven, Harriet, and finally…Eric.” Mike clenched his fists, as Eve started crying. Harold’s face was expressionless as he drove on.

Chapter 20: Without a Word

“…can we finish this?” Jack asked. His eye was still uncomfortable from its destruction this morning.

“It’ll be resolved once you drop the gun,” Ron answered. He had been still since they had their guns pointed at each other, from the very start. Until now, he hadn’t moved. The guy didn’t even blink.

“…you’re going to shoot me, aren’t you?”

“That’s a stupid question, isn’t it?” Ron laughed. Jack decided to give it a last shot.

“…Ron, if I told you I knew a danger zone that would lead us out of this island, would you drop the gun?” Ron raised his eyebrows, interested. The danger zones didn’t work now, judging by that dull, electric shock that happened before. He didn’t exactly have a plan for his cousin from there, only knowing what he wanted to do. “Ron, would you?”

“Maybe.” The former killer gave a smirk.

“John? John? John, get a hold of yourself!” Mona pleaded as she backed away from the deranged, terrified student. He was shaking as he held his pistol. “I’m not going to kill you…there’s no reason to, right? I just have a fork…”

“You…you swear…you promise you don’t want to kill me? You swear you won’t?” John asked. Mona nodded. “Show me your hands, and don’t cross them…say it…”

“I swear.” John covered his face as he walked over, not wanting to show her the expression he had. “John, are you okay?”

“I’m just afraid…that’s all…you…you can understand…right?”

“Of course. Don’t worry…” They hugged each other. When Mona tried to break off, John wouldn’t let her. His grip was too firm as he pressed their bodies together. “John, what are you-” She was broken on when his tongue entered her mouth. What is he doing? Mona could feel a bulge as John took one of his arms off of her, wrapping the other around more tightly. With his free hand that held the pistol, John shot her, throwing her down.

Mona was beyond screaming, now. She remembered something from her past as John leaned over her…

“I see…this happened when, exactly?” the police officer had asked her as she sat down. She put one leg on top of another and bent down, as if to cover herself. Her long hair was wild as she tried hiding her face under it.

“Right…right after school,” she answered, whispering, looking up for a moment. The officer saw that her eyes were red, probably from crying.

“I see…this is the gang that had killed a certain Ray Xu, Evelyn Xu’s brother several years ago, am I correct?” the police officer asked. “Were you there that day, as was with the student in your grade, Joe?”

“Yes…I said nothing…I said nothing…” Mona responded, thinking about that day. She was also brought along, as her brother had to take care of her. They had taken her as they ran away. The gang…Joe’s brother, her brother, a person she didn’t know, and the person who killed Ray was Harold’s brother. Harold, that person who always watched out for Eve…

“Well, that’s all in the past, though we have more charges against them now,” the police officer sighed as he took notes. “Miss Mona, don’t worry. Plenty of people face issues like this…we will deal with them. Violence is not what four responsible young adults should be doing to girls like you. Physical pain amounts to nothing...”

“…they didn’t just hurt me like that,” Mona whispered, barely audible. “That wasn’t all…”

“I’m sorry, I don’t understand,” the officer admitted. “Continue on…”

“…they hurt me. I got through pain. But they didn’t just use normal violence.” The officer was catching on, now.

“You mean…they…raped you?” the police officer choked. “Including your brother?” Mona looked up again, her hair falling away from her face. Tears were in her eyes. “It’s…it’s okay…you’re not…you’re not the only girl who has this done to her…” She was standing up, now. Her knees were trembling as she curled her hands up into fists. “Miss Mona?”

“I DIDN’T RESIST! I LET THEM DO IT! I TOOK IT, AND I STAYED QUIET! I DIDN’T RUN AWAY, AND I DIDN’T CALL FOR HELP! IF WE WEREN’T SPOTTED, THEY WOULD HAVE GOTTEN AWAY WITH IT!” Mona screamed as her voice rang throughout the building. “I TOOK IT ALL WITHOUT A WORD!” The officer had never seen someone more broken and hurt in his life.

“Is everything alright, here?” someone asked, opening the door. “I have a call, Mr. Cor-“

“Hold it.”

“Excuse me? Walter-“

“I said to let the damn phone call wait!” the police officer, Walter James Corrinal, ordered. Confused, the person walked away, closing the door.

All…without…a word… Mona thought as she looked up in the sky. Her hand moved a bit, brushing past her fork. Not…not this time… John was kissing her neck, moving down, now. Grabbing her fork firmly and screaming, Mona knocked him off. Struggling to her feet, ignoring the pain she was feeling with the bullet wound in her, she lunged at John.

As she landed on him, she stabbed his right eye with her fork several times. Howling in pain, John tried getting out of her reach, but Mona’s grip was too firm as she kept him down. She continued to stab his eye with the fork until, feeling weak, fell to the side. Turning away from the sight of John clutching his eye in pain, Mona looked back into the sky.

Mona gave a sigh as she closed her eyes. It didn’t matter anymore. This time, she didn’t let him do it.

Chapter 21: Too Late

“So, when’d you and Mona meet in the first place?” Joe asked. I remember when I did…damn my brother. Well, I’m not going to be like him. When we’re out of this place, I’ll be a new man…if we get out of this place.

“We…uh…ran into each other,” Sean answered, feeling lame as he said it. “We walked into each other, and helped pick up each other’s stuff…that’s all.”

“…and that turned into a crush how?” Joe wondered. “Oh, wait…right, it’s Mona.” He laughed, and Sean managed to give off a weak smile. There was a scream up ahead. “What the hell was that?!”

“Mona!” Sean yelled as he looked at his tracking device. “John’s there, too!” As he ran forward, leaving Joe behind, he came into a clearing. There was John, clutching his face in pain. Besides him, holding a bloody fork, was Mona, dead. Joe came up from behind, silent.

“MONA, WAKE UP! I know you’re just sleeping…you’re just taking a nap,” Sean sobbed as he ran over. His tears fell on her body as Joe just looked away, saddened. He also guessed what was going to happen next, and it would just be worse if he was trying to stop. He had seen the thing lying on the ground. There were some things people would die trying to do, after all.

“You did this,” Sean accused, looking at John. The teenager stopped clutching his face and turned around. Sean bent down, grabbing the pistol that was there.

“Ah, please, man…I’m sorry…” John moaned as his head stayed in pain. Sean looked at him, face filled with rage.

“You killed her, you selfish bastard. You thought of no one but yourself. Go to fucking hell! For killing her, and for preventing me from reaching my goal!” Sean shouted. Joe closed his eyes as he heard the gunshot. When it was over, he turned around, finding out he had assumed correctly. There was Sean, holding the pistol, and a dead John…that was a good shot, too.

“MY GOAL OF TELLING HER HOW MUCH I LOVED HER!” Sean screamed as he fell to his knees. “YOU’RE BELOW HELL!” Taking Joe’s crowbar out of his hands, he beat John’s corpse over and over, swinging vertically at the dead body’s head.

“He’s dead already! Isn’t it bad enough that people have died in this? Do you have to ruin their bodies, too?” Joe asked as he ran over.

“BUT HE KILLED HER!” Sean yelled.

“It’s done…both of them are gone, now,” Joe told him.

“ALL I WANTED WAS TO TELL HER! WAS THAT SO HARD TO DO?!” Sean bellowed into the skies. “WAS IT SO HARD, HUH?!” He was staring up at the clouds. “WHY? WHY COULDN’T YOU LET ME!” Joe was starting to wonder how long this crush had been, exactly. He walked around to the other side of John’s body, bending down.

“We’ll get through this, man…I’ll help you…I’ll be here to- GET DOWN, SEAN!” Joe pushed him out of the way as a gunshot was heard. As one of the Big 3 fell down to the ground, Sean turned around, recovering from his madness.

“Well, if it isn’t Sean.” Robert turned his eyes on him, not even caring if the shot on Joe would finish him or not.

Chapters may come slower, as I need to rethink my ending. Damn, it's too similar to the original...

Chapter 22: Murderers

Joe held onto the groans of pain he wanted to let loose. Closing his eyes, he focused on the conversation in front of him. He'd like to help Sean, but he'd only make things worse now. Good luck, he thought. Take mine. Damn...only got hit on the side. Barely.

"So, Sean, is that Mike dead? And Mona...now I fired Joe down, too. So, did you kill those two?" Robert asked. "Congrats, you're a murderer along with me!" He raised a pistol at Sean.

Sean stared in horror at Robert's face. His face seemed half-melted and looked as if it hung loosely, ready to fall off at any moment. His right eye seemed to slid down to the right every now and then. Robert's entire body gave off a strange odor; charred flesh. "What...what..."

"See you don't like my new look, Sean. Oh well. So, here we are...we both have a gun, and it's the Battle Royale. We've both murdered. Only question is why you didn't murder Joe yourself. How come?"

"...I'm...I'm not a murderer..."

"But you killed, didn't you?" Robert reminded him. "That makes you a murder, like me."

"N-no..."

"Oh, I get it. These two and Joe were fighting it out, Joe won, and you strolled in, ready to side with him like a sissy, right?"

"N-no...I...wouldn't kill...Mona...no...but..."

"Oh...I get it. So you killed John? Well, you're like me, then."

"I AM NOT LIKE YOU!" Sean screamed. "YOU HAVE BEEN KILLING FOR FUN! EVERYONE DESERVES TO LIVE, NOT JUST US! I WILL NEVER BE LIKE YOU!"

"No one deserves to win and live more than me," Robert muttered as he shot Sean in the forehead. "Moving on..." He grabbed the pistol before walking away. Five minutes later, Joe got up.

Chapter 23: Keeping and Breaking Promises

"How are we going to get through this?" Candace sighed. "Neither of us stand a chance of survival without my cousin...there's no point in the car if someone's just going to shoot us from behind because we've got no chance of hitting them!"

"Don't freak out, Candace...come on, I promised my friend I'd keep you safe, and I will," Tom suggested.

"How can you trust me?! How can I trust you?! How do we know neither of us are going to kill the other!" Candace shot back, falling down to the ground. "It's hopeless!"

Don't worry...I'll think of a way. I promise, Tom thought.

As they drove onto a strip of the beach not yet a danger zone, Harold stopped the car. "What are you doing?!" Mike shouted as he got out of the car to look at the ocean. It was his best chance, but should he do it? Yes, he would. Turning around, Harold pointed the gun straight at Mike's chest.

"What are you doing?!" Mike yelled.

"Eve, get out of the car, and go behind a tree, so you don't have to see this," Harold ordered.

"Harold, this isn't funny!" Eve cried. "What's going on?!"

"Eve, run! He's playing the game!" Mike warned. Harold shook his head.

"No, I'm not. I'm keeping Eve safe, though. You're in this for yourself, Mike. You'll kill her! I'm not letting you do that!" Harold remembered his promise to himself. Protect Eve...that's all that matters...she's been through enough. Brother, you watching? You killed her brother, and that's not going to happen with me.[/u]

"Harold, don't do this," Eve sobbed. Mike leaped out of the car and on top of Harold. They were wrestling for the gun. "Both of you, stop this!"

"I'm not going to die!" Mike screamed as he tried grabbing the gun. As he grabbed it, Harold threw Mike off of him and reached out to take it. Struggling for the gun, Mike tried keeping it pointed away from him. Eventually, Harold gained control of the weapon, pointing it at Mike as he still met resistance. Right before the trigger was pulled, Mike changed the direction.

As the gun fired, Harold and Mike stayed where they were in shock and silence as blood splattered all over the car from Eve. She collapsed onto the car floor as she died a quick, merciful death. Both remained fixed in their positions, but Harold recovered quicker, realizing he had the gun.

"YOU FUCKING BASTARD!" Harold lept onto Mike. "SHE DESERVED TO LIVE! YOU KILLED HER! KILLED HER!" In his fit of rage, Harold pressed the gun down onto Mike's throat, cutting off air. "GO TO HELL!" For twenty minutes Harold stayed there before noticing Mike had choked to death already.

"Eve...I'm sorry...I'm sorry..." Harold tossed the gun away as he cried.

Chapters will start to pick up the action again after this one.

Chapter 24: Teams

“Alright, so let’s go find Candace and Tom, then go onto the next part of the plan,” Jack suggested. “Come on, I think they went that way.” He pointed in the direction behind Ron, who just started laughing. “What’s so funny?”

“You really think I’m that stupid?” Ron challenged, keeping his pistol right on Jack’s body. “I know which way they went, and it wasn’t behind me. Trying to get me off guard after all this friendly talk, right?” Jack did not hesitate as he nodded, walking backwards, gun still aimed at Ron. “You shoot me, I shoot you. Get the hell out of my sight so I can kill you next time.”

When Jack was gone, Ron sighed. Damn it, I blew it, right there. Must be going soft, since I have to keep Candace and her little boyfriend alive… He knew what he had to do next. Even if Jack didn’t know it, his false advice on a way out was actually true. He just didn’t know that someone had already helped them get rid of the only issue.

First step, got to find the two of them. Ron listened to the announcements of new deaths.

Oh fuck. Seven people left. We’re down to the serious players now.

Near a house

“Tom?” Candace started as they walked through the forest. “If we manage to survive until the last few…what are you going to do?”

“I promised to keep you alive, didn’t I?” Tom replied. “I’d rather die over breaking my promises…why? Would you kill me?” Candace shook her head. “I don’t know. This place can do some strange things to your head.”

“Tom!”

“Look, I’m a regular kid. I’m an idiot, unlike you and your cousin. I don’t know who to trust, who not to, so I have to choose one or the other, like most people here. The first one gets people killed,” Tom said. Candace looked worried, ready to run away. “So I’ll be dead soon, being the first kind.”

There was the sound of someone nearby.

“Sooner than I thought. Come on, let’s go!”

At The Beach

“Hey there, Harold,” Joe greeted as he walked onto the beach. “Where’s Evelyn?” Then he saw the two dead bodies. “Harold…you didn’t!”

“I did,” Harold answered, sitting down against the jeep. “I should kill myself right here…but how did you know to find me here?”

“I knew someone was here,” Joe replied, showing Harold the tracking device. “It belonged to Sean.” Instantly, Harold aimed his gun towards Joe. “Not me, Robert.”

“Robert…he’s been killing everyone,” Harold explained. “He nearly killed us, but…Eric…saved us. Eric tried to kill Robert in an explosion. We could still see it while we were driving. Eric died, not Robert, somehow.”

“The lucky bastard,” Joe muttered.

“So where’s Mona?”

“Dead.”

“So it’s just us two and Robert now?”

“Yep, the gang’s younger siblings…two of us died now, haven’t we? The two girls, Mona and…” Joe halted, hesitating.

“Evelyn.”

“So what are you planning to do now?” Joe asked. “Just mope around?”

“What else? I’m not a killer.”

“You said it yourself. Robert’s been killing everyone. I’m betting he killed Peter, who was our best way out. He got Eric killed, our next hope. There’ll be a lot less chance of getting out now, but we have to, some way.”

“So you’re saying…” Joe grinned.

“Yup. A little reunion…” Joe looked inside the jeep. “Hey, is that a bulletproof vest?”

“Yeah, why?”

“I’m going to be needing it with what I want to do.”

Book doesn't have enough to worry about already, so I'm needlessly bumping this.

I'm holding a vote. First 5 answers get taken.

Would You Rather First See:

An attempt made on Candace and Tom while they're in the houses.
An uber martial arts and various other pwnage fight like Eric vs. Robert except maybe even better

The chapter after this will contain EXTREME violence.

Chapter 25: Attack

“Into the house!” Tom told Candace. “Right now!” He tried to open the door for her, but the doorknob refused to budge. “Damn it, it’s locked!” Forcing his weight against the door, he hoped to knock it down but it wasn’t working.

“Hold on, I was given a lockpick,” Candace remembered, having Tom make room for her. “Let’s see…”

“Footsteps growing louder!”

“It won’t move!” Candace constantly kicked the door while trying to pick it. The first gunshot sounded, missing Tom off by a few yards. “Come on!” Success…the door opened, allowing them to take sanctuary within the building. “Go, quick!”

As they shut the door behind them, locking, they continued down the hallway. “It was a pretty big house…we have to find some door on the other side or something,” Tom muttered, now sweating nervously. “Candace, watch it!” On instinct, he grabbed her and dragged her to the room next door, a dining room.

A gunshot sounded, probably at the door. Others followed… “Before he can get through the door, we have to go somewhere,” Tom told Candace. “We got to get up.” Then he realized he was on top of Candace. “Eheh…sorry.”

When they were back on their feet, another gunshot sounded, along with the sound of something following. Both ran but in separate directions. Tom went right, up the spiraling staircase. Candace went forward, into a series of various rooms connected by doors.

“Now where are they,” Jack muttered as he stepped over the ruins of the door.

Upstairs, Tom carefully snuck over to the ledge of the upper floor, which stopped right before the entrance. There was only space above the entrance. Peering downwards, Tom’s shaking hand held the pistol. He was about to shoot when Jack looked up. Quickly, Tom pulled back as Jack fired.

“Where’s your friend, Candace?” Jack taunted. Tom had done the dumbest of things, gone upstairs where there was no exit. But…it was a spiral staircase. He might get killed on the way up. Finding Candace would work first. While he was gone, Tom would just wait there, thinking Jack was hoping he slipped…

Jack walked forward, past the stairs, opening a door to find another room, with 3 doors. “Who the hell builds a house like this?” He tried two doors, to find that they were locked. “Damn it!” He walked to the other and, to his liking, found it was opened. Candace left whatever doors she went through unlocked, being in a hurry…

He stepped into the next room, gun ready. Then he laughed. One of the doors was left wide open. As he casually strolled towards it, he was about to enter, when the door slammed in his face.

From the other side of the door, Candace locked the door and ran, not knowing where to go. But she was out of the house, now. The sound of something else was nearing…it was like, what, a jeep?

“Damn it,” Jack groaned. He shot the door open, but to find no one there. He had lost Candace in the forest, damn it! He went back, to finish off Tom.

Tom was a wreck, gun pointed at where Jack would come from, his hands shaking wildly. Any moment now, Jack would appear…footsteps! Jack appeared, gun ready, and Tom wildly fired three shots before falling on his back. The shots all missed, but they had startled Jack, who dropped his gun. But when Tom got back up, Jack was ready again, and Tom could only run, trapped between the ledge and Jack.

“Well now, I can’t kill Candace but at least I know you’re dead,” Jack remarked, gun fixed on Tommy. Damn…those gunshots…who knew Tommy had the guts.

Candace is still alive? A surge of hope went through Tom’s body, reviving his spirit and giving him new energy. But there was no way out, unless…

Tommy jumped, and Jack fired. Jack missed, and Tommy landed unharmed on the bottom of the first floor. Tom ran through the doorway, back outside, letting out a sigh of relief. But Jack was following him…Tom sped up his pace, running wildly as he heard Jack fire in the distance.

“Tommy!” someone screamed. Candace! He turned, to see Harold driving a jeep, with Candace in a seat. “Hop on!”

He felt like singing when he escaped with them.

Meanwhile, Jack headed back to the house. Circling it, he noticed the garage, open. A jeep…perfect.

Somewhere else in the forest

Payback time, Joe thought as he neared Robert. You’re going to hell, Robert.
