Awesome. I love these books; They're quite literally my favorite series ever, along with the Mallorean, since they're so deeply connected and all. |

Oh, good, I'm not the only one who's read them. As for anyone who hasn't, I suggest you check out your local library to see if you had them. Anyway, the following is in my own words, and is a summary of events in a series written by David and Leigh Eddings. I hold no claim over the series it describes, the Belgariad and the Mallorean. There are seven gods. Eight, actually, but one is generally not counted, due to the fact that his people tend to keep to themselves in caves. These seven gods conspired to create the world, but the eighth god, thier father, forbade it. However, they still created the world, and all of it's creatures, from Algeroth to man. They made beatuiful creatures, such as the unicorn; but they also made terrible things, like Basilisks. Upon realizing their folly, the gods attemptd to unmake these things; but the eighth god forbade them, saying "Behold, what thou hast wrought thou mayest in no wise unmake, for in thy folly thou hasttorn asunder the fabric of the heavens and the peace thereof that thou might bring forth this world of thine to be a plaything and an entertainment. Know, however, that whatsoever that ye make, be it ever so monstrous or unseemly, it will abide and be a rebuke unto the for thy folly. For in the day that one thing which is made is unmade, in that day all will be unmade." The other gods didn't like that much, but the idea of the universe being unmade wasn't particularly appealing to them. And, so, the world and it's people was created. This world had a part in a much larger destiny; the destiny of the entire universe. There were two destinies, actually. For, in fact, long ago, before the gods had existed, there was a great cosmic accident. Things were going just fine and dandy, everything doing what it was supposed to when it was supposed to, until there was an Accident. A certain star exploded a bit before it was supposed to, and this explosion set off other stars. In fact, the chain reaction pretty much blew a hole in the universe. And from that hole came a different destiny, a darker destiny. The original destiny didn't like that at all; it was kind of planning on staying. The second destiny, however, decided that it was going to be the way the universe was going to go, and the two had a bit of an argument about it. Knowing that a direct confrontation between two all powerful forces would blow themselves and the rest of existence up, the desided to channel their powers into vessels, who would change often. These two would have their vessels have at it, and while it was not always a direct confrontation, or a fight, they would have more subtle contests, such as one person making one decision. Finally, the two had come close to what the two now reffered to as their "game," and they decided to have at it on a new little platform. And so, they tweaked the gods a bit, and gave them the idea of making a world. And so the world came into existence, and the final battle, a battle that would span thousand of years, began. The gods are Alorn, the bear god, Torak, the dragon god, Nyssa, the snake god, Chaldan, the bull god, Mara, the bat god, Nedra, the lion god, and Aldur, the owl god. This leaves the final, unaffiliated god, UL. He is the father of the gods, the one who remained apart when they created the world. He, too has a people, although he didn't plan on it originally. Now, sometime when the world was realatively new, Belgarath was born. I'm not going to get terribly deep into his history yet, buthe's important. He is the first deciple of the god Aldur, who originally had no people. Others came later; Beldin, the hunchback, and Belzedar, the apostate. As you may notice, they all have Bel in their names; this is something Aldur added when he declared them his diciples. His diciples were the first known people to use the Will and the Word; the world's only form of "magic." (Excluding summoning, but we might talk about that later.) The Will and the Word works like this: the person focuses their will on the idea of something doing something, or moving somewhere, and releases their will with the word. It can be any word, really, but it sounds more profesional if you say something that makes it sound like a command. ;) Now, the diciples had to use this power for Aldur, who had them do all sorts of things. To keep it short, the diciples ran about doing the work of Aldur, who worked for the original destiny. Now, eventually, Aldur found a rock, and he began to roll it around in his hand. He kept rolling it for hundreds of years, for, in fact, those with the power of the Will and the Word continued to live until they fufilled their destiny. After a while, the rock became perfectly round, and gave off a blue glow. The rock was now known as Aldur's Orb, and it possesed great power. The diciples gave this thought, but shrugged it off, for their master had told them not to mind it, but Belzedar continued to obsess over the Orb. The others shrugged this off as well, although they find it much more peculiar in rertospect. Now, Aldur's brother Torak coveted the Orb. One day, he visited Aldur in his tower, and he struck him down and stole the Orb. That pissed the diciples off pretty badly, but Aldur stopped them from giving chase, and instead told them to alert the other gods. The gods and their people conspired, and they formed plans for a great war. Althou they had many more nations, they were still out numbered, because Torak's people, the Angoraks, bred like freakin' rabbits. Still, they made war, and did pretty damn nicely. In the final battle, when the Angoraks were about to lose, Torak held up the Orb in desparation and cracked the earth. I don't mean he put a little canyon between himself and his enemies, I mean he made a whole new friggin' ocean. Of course, he had just dumped freezing water on boiling rock. That isn't really advisable, seeing as how the rock explodes. So, there was a massive exp, osion, and although millions of Angoraks were killed, they survived and fled. Torak, however didn't get off scot-free. The Orb didn't like being used to rip open the face of it's mother. (You must remeber that it's still a rock, no matter how powerful.) So, it pretty much ripped Torak's pretty-boy face open and filled the gaps with a fire that could never be extinguished. Not to good. So, now, the world looked like this: ![]() With an ocean between themselves and Torak, Aldur's diciples had plenty of time to set some more things up. There weren't all that many important things, but the important things were REALLY important. They were: The Recovery of the Orb- Now, Torak may have had his face burned by it, but he still had the orb. So, eventually, the king of Alorn and his three sons found a way across the ocean to Torak, but they had to do it during that particular winter. Belgarath, although anxious to leave his newlywed wife while she was with child, went with them across the sea to recover the orb. To make a long story, they did so. He also split up Aloria between the king of Aloria and his sons. His youngest is the only person who can tough the orb without bursting into flames. However, when he crosses back over, he learns to terrible things; the gods have decided to leave the world and guide their people in spirit, and that his wife died during child birith. He goes temporarly insane, but not before meeting his two new baby girls, and touching the firstborn's head, putting a white lock in her jet black hair and giving her the gift of the Will and the Word. After he recovers from his insanity, the first thing he does is go on a drinking and sex spree. He returns to the Vale of Aldur only after having his ass kicked by Beldin. The assassination of the royal line of Riva- Riva, the kingdom of the son of the aforementioned king of Aloria, the island fortress, is penetrated by Nyissian assassins pretending to be merchants, who assassinate the entirety of the royal family. The assassins claimed the the kings youngest child jumped into the ocean, and was saved by a giant white owl. However, dur to the fact that Nyissian are prone to ingest any particular berry or root will make them "happy," the idea is pretty much discarded. The Battle of Vo Mimbre- Torak goes on a campaign to retake the. Once again, a long story short, He is stopped short at the city of Vo Mimbre, where is challenged by the Rivan Warder, Brand. Brand defeats him with a stab in the face, but does not kill him. He put into a coma, and Zedar, who is revealed to be a traitor, takes his body to a cave where they won't find him. And so, these are the major historic events in brief. I will post the different races in a moment. (Did I leave anything out?) |

Umm . . . Actually, there are different forms of magic aside from the Will and the Word, or sorcery. For example, witchcraft (like Vordai, witch of the Drasnian Fens) involves the use of spirits, while the pagan people of Karanda summon demons. The people of Kell use the stars to foretell the future. Specifically, their Seers can 'see', but no one knows how exactly they do it. The Ulgos have a special group of people called 'Diviners' who can travel through solid rock. I don't know if this is magic or just a racial feature. Also, in important events, I think you should put down the annihilation of the Marag people by the Tolnedrans supposedly due to their cannibalistic practices (but really because there was gold there), and the subsequent reducal of Mara to a weeping spirit that drives all who enter Marag insane. Beltira, Belkira, Belsambar, and Belmakor were disciples of Aldur as well. The latter two are deceased, having committed suicide due to their reluctance to live any longer in such a despairing world. The Twins are still alive, however. There's a little more, but I'm not sure where you're setting the plot, and it might just end up being spoilers because it's about events that happen during the Belgariad/Mallorean. |

Right after we've got all the current history covered, so we can figure out what the bloody hell we're doing. Now, the countries and the races: (I didn't write any of this. It's being copied from a book called the Rivan Codex, by David and Leigh Eddings.) Tolnedra The Geography Tolnedra, to state the obvious, is one of the larger of the western kingdoms. Its northern border is formed by the lower reaches of the River Arend and proceeds easterly thence around the southern tip of Ulgoland, then southeastely along the rim of the western Algarin escarpment...bleh. I'll finisyh this later. Anyone who's read the series, feel free to do some of the other races. |

Let me try. Tolnedra: The land of merchants. The people there value money above all else and are exceptionally shrewd at manipulation in business dealings. Merchants beware when entering this land. Guarded by their god, Nedra, the Tolnedrans have always enjoyed great prosperity. As a side note, the Tolnedrans invented the concept of money. They also have the most organized military force in the world, the Imperial Legions. Unfortunately, due to their greed, the upper classes of Tolnedra are constantly battling to gain control of the throne. (The Honethites, the Vorduvians, the Borunes, the Horbites, and the Ranites.) As of the present, the Borune clan leads Tolnedra. An interesting note about the Borunes is that in years and years ago, Belgarath the Sorceror manipulated them into an agreement: If he managed to place them in power, they would have to agree to marry off their sons to the Dryads, who lived in the woods in southern Tolnedra. Of course, Belgarath was looking into the future to ensure that Ce'Nedra would be born. Aloria: No longer in existence, Aloria was broken up into four parts when the Orb was recovered. All Alorians worship the Bear God, Belar. Cherek Bear-Shouders founded Cherek in the north, a land now famous for its warships. It should be noted that the Bear Cult, a group of fanatics who want to conquer the world and make it serve Belar, is based in this country. His first son, Dras Bull-Neck, founded Drasnia, a horrific place filled with marshes, frigid in the winter and sweltering in summer. Drasnia is famous for its spy system, and it's a good bet that a Drasnian spy is placed on all peoples of any importance in the world. Due to their mass espionage web, Drasnians communicate in a secret sign language with their fingers. Algar Fleet-Foot founded Algaria, a land now populated by the nomadic Algars. The Algars have a close connection with their horses, and every once in a while, a man called a Sha-Dar is born, a man who can communicate with horses psychically. The most interesting physical feature in Algar is the Algarian Stronghold: their Murgo neighbors constantly wanted to war, but found it difficult to do so due to the nomadic nature of the Algar people. So they built a large fortress where nobody lived for the sole purpose of keeping the Murgos happy. Riva Iron-Grip sailed to the island of Riva, wet, dreary isle protected by the other three nations. The isle itself really isn't very important, but the Rivan King is also automatically the Overlord of the West, as the Rivan King is the only man who can touch the Orb without getting incinerated. Sendaria: Going east from the Isle of Riva, the mainland is Sendaria, the land of farmers. Their first king, according to legend, was a rutabaga farmer who was lucky enough to be the most well-liked man in the community and was thus crowned king. At any rate, the Sendars are now for their solid, practical, good sense and their level-headedness, as the Chereks are known for their brashness, the Drasnians for their sneaky ways, the Algars for their taciturn manner, and the Tolnedrans for their greed. The Sendars worship all gods equally, even Torak. Arend: Arendia is . . . retarded, basically. They're the people of Chaldan. Arendia was once made up of three major parts: Vo Wacune, Vo Astur, and Vo Mimbre. Think of Vo Astur as Robin Hood and Vo Mimbre as the wealthy knights and you basically have it. They've been in civil war for thousands of years and even an attempted bridge between the two didn't help (Korodullin, duke of Mimbre, and Mayaserana, daughter of the Asturian duke got married.) Unfortuntely, Vo Wacune got caught up in the struggle and was completely wiped off the map. Polgara the Sorceress was uncommonly fond of the city and described it almost as a fairy-tale land where all was bright and pure. Due to their pigheadedness, it is common practice among the other people to roll their eyes and mutter, "Arends" whenever they become belligerent. Nyissa: Located to the south, the Nyissans worship the snake-god Issa. They live in a swamp, basically, and have discovered that certain plants have certain properties that allow them to go off into happy-dreamland world. Basically hallucinogens. As a result, 99% of the Nyissan population is high at any given time. Except when they're sleeping off the high. Swamp plants also have potent poison inside of them, and the Nyissans are master assassins using subtle poisons that make you die in horrific ways. Religiously, the Nyissans are probably the most devoted to their god: They worship snakes, quite literally. Politically, the Nyissans always have a queen named Salmissra. Dozens of young girls are taken every year to see if they match what Salmissra is supposed to look like. The one that matches closest is crowned queen and the rest are slaughtered. Very bad practice. Marag: Belgarath the Sorceror was uncommonly fond of this nation, a mostly desert people. The Marags were sexually promiscuous, and it was to Marag that Belgarath traveled after discovering that his wife had died in childbirth. He proceeded to sleep around for several years before being dragged back home by Beldin. At any rate, the most interesting feature of the Marags was their cannibalism. This came about due to a mistake: They misread a sacred text and thought that Mara wanted them to . . . eat each other, basically. The Tolnedrans used this as an excuse to invade and wipe out the Marags, although a few were sold into slavery. As of the present, there is only one Marag left in the world. Mara, however, thinks that all his children are dead and so continues to weep in the desert, driving all who enter into madness. Angaraks: The people of Torak. There are four types of Angaraks: Thulls, Murgos, Malloreans, and Nadraks. The priests of Torak are called Grolims. Thulls are extremely idiotic. Though this makes them less evil than the others. Nuff said. Nadraks are merchants. A decent bunch, in general. Murgos and Malloreans are warring due to some mistaken assassinations and such. Probably not too important. Both are of the upper class - warriors, aristocracy, etc. Godless People: The Dals, Melcenes, Ulgos, Karands, and Morindim are people without gods. They get along pretty well, considering. Karands and Morindim are the demon summoners, Dals are mostly Seers and Necromancers, and the Melcenes are an extremely advanced race, very good at technology and architecture, and they fight with an army of elephants. The Ulgos found UL and had one guy plead with him until he would accept them as his people. UL also later accepted the 'monsters', as well, like the dragon, the Algroths, etc. As stated earlier, Ulgo diviners can go through rock. |
