If K-8 were not successful I would agree 9th graders would be better off not yet in High School. Therefore, slight change from choices earlier in the thread.

K-8, 9-12
K-7, 8-9, 10-12
K-6, 7-9, 10-12

Anybody like the K-7, 8-9, 10-12 configuration? Here's an unconventional one....k-9, 10-12?

Personally, I would like it if they eliminated 2 year grade spans at any grade level.
I prefer spans of 3 or 4years to those with 2.

Ninth grade is included in hs because the grades earned in ninth grade are considered when applying for college. When ninth grade was in jr high (yes that's how old I am, I remember jr high school) many people did not realize that it was considered part of high school by colleges.

When I was in 9th grade in 1974/1975, eveyone I knew understood that your grades "count" for college.

When I entered Frost it was a JH, with grades 7-9. There were sport programs for only 8th & 9th graders. There was a lot of "stuff" going on down the path, in the bathrooms, etc.

When I started 8th grade, LPS made the move to bump the 9th graders into the HS's. That's when the MS's started and they also offered NO sports for the 7th or 8th graders. The school completely turned around without the 9th graders. There was no more smoking down the path by the YMCA before school or in the bathrooms during passing time, if you skipped a class there was a note for the teacher to send you to the office at the following class. This was the year that Lowell JH(now called Johnson) was closed. It was surely a different environment without the 9th graders.

FYI, 64% of the country has K-5, 6-8, 9-12.

After putting my daughter in a K-8 school this year I can't even begin to tell you the differences in the 7th & 8th graders there vs. the kids at LPS M.S.'s. I'm all for keeping the kids young longer! I have also witnessed the benefits of kids being in one school for longer periods of time. The research stating the effects of the "family/staff connections" is so true! Switching schools every few years is terrible for everyone involved, especially the kids. The Legacy stinks and had nothing to do with the kids! :ph43r:

After reading the Observer today and Liepa's comments -- I am more convinced then ever that the LI is here to stay. Get used to K-4, 5-6, 9-12 -- I have seen no evidence that anyone is willing to change it back. It is nice to fantasize about what we would want but I don't think it will ever happen. Maybe is 1000 kids had left...

If we get new BOE members in and fire LIEpa, along with other administrators, it won't be up to him anymore ;) . And hopefully get someone in that is more qualified running a large district.

Ultimately, if they continue to lose $$$$$, they will be FORCED to listen to their customers. They won't have a choice if they want the district to continue to be "a lighthouse district, a beacon of excellence offering exceptional educational opportunities to all children and serving as a source of pride for our community."

If they wish to maintain their status as "premier" district, they will "have to do something."

I agree, but will a change of 2 this May be enough to make things happen soon enough?

If the current BOE takes ownership of the problems and the loss of students, perhaps we can see positive changes for next school year. If not, we can have 2 new trustees who will be seated in July, so unfortunately we may be stuck for another year.
