Thank you for your interest in charter schools for your children.

If you have found one in your area, congratulations! If you have not, then the following information is even more important to you.

The Michigan Association of Public School Academies (MAPSA) is dedicated to expand charter school options for all families in Michigan. We believe all children deserve to have a quality education and every parent should have educational choices.

So how can it happen? How can you participate in true educational choice for your children? What can you do?

First, here is a brief story on how charter schools began in 1993.

A law was passed enabling parents, educators, grandparents and community leaders an opportunity to open a public school academy. These schools provide a public choice for parents between the traditional public schools and public school academies (charters). Since public schools are paid for by your tax dollars, there is no tuition.

Due to political pressures from the Michigan Education Association, a limit on the number of charter schools authorized by universities was placed in the law. (A charter school must be authorized and universities are the key to opening up new schools.) That limitation is called the CAP and it limited the universities to 150 total schools in Michigan. As was expected, the CAP was quickly reached; therefore, the opportunity for new schools is severely limited which means your choice for your child is limited.

If you have not found a charter school yet, you are probably on a waiting list for a school opening. You are joining 10,000 other families that are also without an educational choice.

Here is where your help is needed.

If you wish to add your voice to the other parents wanting educational choice, then complete the attached form and send it back to us by fax, email, or regular mail.

We will keep you informed on what you can do to help.

Your participation is vital. Your child’s educational future is their key to future success. Will you partner with us? Your children and the children of Michigan depend on it.
