Do you think that this means 5/6 schools will get officers also? That would kind of be the last nail in the coffin for the" 5/6 schools are not middle schools" argument wouldn't it?

Gee, Mr. Young, maybe it's just that the 5/6 schools create an "older school" climate?

"Bomb threats occur occasionally, but it is typically at the older schools," Young said.

What does this mean??? Other than this guy has no real purpose....

Really? I try to watch or read the news every day and I truly cannot recall a bomb threat made in ANY of our Livonia schools.......EVER!

Will someone please correct me if I am wrong? Has there ever been a bomb threat in any Livonia schools before Cooper?

I graduated from Stevenson in 2001, there were several bomb threats while I was there. I in high school around the time of Columbine. There were tons of copy cat incedents. There were signs left up after school and all sorts of stuff. I have a younger cousin who is in high school in Michigan who actually had a bomb at his school. I am only posting to let you know this is probably more common that you think.

Neutalizing this type of incident with ideas that it's just a "common" occurance really serves to diminish it's importance and seriousness. We are talking about an elementary school here not a high school.

Why is it that anything and everything that happens in LPS these days is portrayed in that manner? Nothing really matters and everything is just an "ineveitable reality" from bomb threats to student loss and so on....does anything really matter anymore? Does anyone in the admin. really care about anything?
Why is there continually encouragement to just shrug things off? Randy is a prime example....his thoughts on student loss--"people come and go" No big deal, huh?

They are not common at the elementary level (excluding Detroit).

The police have determined that the bomb threat @ Cooper was a hoax.....but this is still disturbing news coming out of an elementary school in LPS.

I've had elementary-aged children in LPS for the past 6 years and I have been a resident of Livonia since 1997. I don't remember there ever being a bomb threat in the elementary schools before this year.

I am not trying to diminish what happened at all. I am an educator, and I do teach at a school with 5th and 6th graders. It is a scary thing sometimes knowing that these things happen. With that being said. My school has emergency procedures in place for things such as bomb threats and intruders. This was not something that occured when I was in school, we never even thought of these things. As a teacher the thought of being in one of these situations is incredibly scary. Unfortuately, it is what is going on in our world today. When my mom and dad were in school they were hiding under their desks because of the Cuban Missel Crisis.

With all due respect Joc, I appreciate your opinion.......but....... some of us can't help wondering if the large elementary schools are contributing to this type of behavior in Livonia.

I'm sorry if I am mis-reading your posts, joc, but in one post you said you graduated from SHS in 2001 and there were several bomb threats. The next time you post you wrote 'This was not something that occured when I was in school, we never even thoght of these things'? Which is it? Did it happen or didn't it? And why was it never reported so the people of Livonia would know what is going on?

Either way, I find it unacceptable for Jay Young to be so relaxed about such a thing. Say what you will, but to say this is just a sign of the times is unacceptable as well. Why does he act like kids are talking about egging someones house?

Read the research. Large schools with narrow grade spans will normally have more discipline problems.

I do not think parents should accept broken aspects of our society. This tolerance attitude is learned by the kids who do these things.

I read the post as emergency procedures for bomb threats did not occure when he was in school.
I have been in Livonia for over 40 years and have heard of bomb threats and students threatening teachers. Unfortunately this is a part of our society today and we should be activitly searching for ways to put a stop to this type of behavior. I am glad that my children's school have intruder and bomb procedures in an attempt to keep my children safe, I grieve that it is necessary.

I would also like to know what actions are being taken with the child that made this threat? Will there be a suspension? An expulsion perhaps?

Something needs to be done so this child understands that writing threatening notes on a wall (or anywhere) is completely unacceptable no matter what age! He/she (along with the parents) need to take responsibility for their actions. If they are old enough to make a threat like that, they are old enough to understand punishment is in order.

Police are still investigating. They have no suspects.

The school, on Ann Arbor Trail, has an enrollment of 750 fifth- and sixth-graders.

Good luck at trying to figure out 'who did it'.

So true, fyi. With that many kids it may be impossible :ph43r:

I really don't mean to sound so harsh with my comments, but something needs to be done to ensure other kids of all ages understand that this is just not acceptable behavior :(
