My daughter also said there was a Livonia police officer at Riley, walking around at lunch time.

So is there any follow-up to this. Does anyone know if the child/adult who wrote the threat was caught? Why did they do it? How have they dealt with this person?

Between a bomb threat at one 5/6 and a gun threat at another 5/6, this is really out of control. I am afraid to ask "What's next?" :(

Again, with the disportionate amount of kids the same age under one roof--

Discipline problems and bullying can be magnified. There is no longer any balance in age groups.

Just too many kids of one age--under one roof--exaggerates behavior issues.

Let's say that there are usually only 6 kids in 5th and 6th grade, who tend to bully--based on historic numbers.

Now, there are 12 kids, who tend to bully. I'm not a stats expert, but this seems on pont.

Can someone help me out here?

Bomb threat at Cooper a hoax
By Rebecca Jones
Staff Writer

A bomb threat written in crayon at Cooper Upper Elementary was a hoax, police and school district officials said.
The note, described as graffiti in orange crayon, appeared on a girls' bathroom stall Nov. 8 right before school dismissal.
"It indicated that on Nov. 10 that there would be a bomb," said Jay Young director of community relations.
Westland police brought a bomb-sniffing dog through the school and found no evidence of explosives.
"They determined that it was probably a hoax and had no reason to believe it was a credible threat," Young said.
After school School Age Child Care programs were disrupted during the investigation, but the building was not evacuated during school hours.
Westland police also provided extra security at Cooper on Nov. 9 and 10.
School officials followed the district's Crisis Response Plan.
The school district sent home a letter with students the next day informing them of the threat and to reassure them that school was safe, Young said.
The letter asked parents to discuss the incident with their children.
"Please encourage (students ) to always talk with a Cooper staff member should they see/hear anything related to this type of incident," the letter stated. "It is important that, as a community, we send a message that we will not tolerate threats of any kind."
"Bomb threats occur occasionally, but it is typically at the older schools," Young said.
Police are still investigating. They have no suspects.
The school, on Ann Arbor Trail, has an enrollment of 750 fifth-and sixth-graders. Cooper reportedly had more absences than normal Friday, but exact figures were unavailable at press time.

This is the quote of the year, and it comes from Jay Young. Thanks for making our 10 and 11 year olds "older schoolers".

I have had it with this whole Legacy Initiative thing. First we have a loaded land mine at the old Cooper School that is probably going to explode on it's own from all the toxic garbarge in it and now we have 5th and 6th graders with crayons threatening to blow up the school AND kids that bring guns to school. For Gods' sake the diesel fumes from the buses is a big enough health issue as it is. I know this because my kid has asthma and the doctor said the fumes are dangerous. I knew when this legacy thing first started I should moved my kid out of LPS but I waited too long and the waiting lists for all the catholic schools are filled up. I AM NOT SENDING MY KID THERE NEXT YEAR !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In fact, if I can get my kid out sometime this year I will. I am now a scared parent. I do not want my kid in a school with guns, bombs, and who knows what else. I am FED UP! I am going to write or go to a board meeting and tell them all to fix this mess they have gotten us into. Fire the appropriate people and restore OUR district to it former glory. Does anyone know if they will listen to me? WE ARE THE PARENTS! These are OUR schools not the Board of Educations' or the administrations. All the voters need to vote the Board of Ed out as soon as possible. Hopefully the new Board will get rid of the idiot Superintendent and staff who are responsible for this! Out of basic decency the Board and Superintendent should step down and apologize for this DEBACLE! LOOK AT WHAT THEY HAVE DONE TO OUR SCHOOL SYSTEM AND OUR CHILDREN !!!!!

I don't know if they will ever listen to us parents! It is like talking to a brick wall. They are so stubburn that I don't think they will ever admit they were wrong. Our schools are being run into the ground. Something needs to be done immediately before something very serious happens!

EVERYONE THAT HAS A KID ON A SCHHOL BUS OR STANDING IN OR AROUND A SCHOOL BUS, I URGE YOU TO READ THIS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Diesel Pollution Primer:

soot formation, emissions, dispersal, and health effects:

At some point or another, we’ve all gotten caught behind an 18-wheeler, a garbage truck, a tractor, or a bulldozer and seen, smelled, and even felt the clouds of soot coming from their tailpipes.

But how and why does diesel fuel produce this haze of soot, or particulate matter (PM), and how does it affect the bodies of those who breathe it in? In this backgrounder we take a look at the lifecycle of soot and explore its implications for your family’s health.

The Birth of Soot:

Soot, or particulate matter (PM), begins its life in the belly of both gasoline and diesel-powered engines. These engines create chemical and organic compounds from the combustion of hydrocarbon-based fuels (fossil fuels). These compounds then cluster together in particle form to create soot, which is released into the air as exhaust. Soot may also come to life as the indirect byproduct of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulfur dioxides (SOx) reacting in the atmosphere. Soot’s composition often includes hundreds of different chemical elements, including sulfates, ammonium, nitrates, elemental carbon, condensed organic compounds, and even carcinogenic compounds and heavy metals such as arsenic, selenium, cadmium and zinc.1

Children—and their developing lungs—may also suffer more acutely from breathing in diesel soot. Outdoors more often and breathing in more air per body weight than adults do, children suffer disproportionately from asthma and other respiratory conditions. Asthma is the most common chronic disease of childhood and a leading cause of disability among children; today about one in thirteen children have asthma.

my kids mom, I empathize with you and understand you emotion.

I heard all three Middle Schools have one policeman stationed throughout the day. It's unbelievable if this is true.

The extra transition, large numbers at the mega UE schools and Middle Schools having older kids together sure doesn't seem to be creating the safest school climate. :(

The more time our kids are are on the bus the more danger it is to our kids. The more time they around the bus while it waits to fill up with kids, the more fumes, and more health problems. This whole bussing thing is the worst part of the legacy plan. The money issue is beyond a debacle.......how did they ever think this plan had merit?
They all need to have their heads examined. They have cost OUR district BIG BUCKS!!!!!! and the health cost to our children is beyond dollars...........TAKE BACK OUR SCHOOLS! Move out of Livonia if you can, that's what we plan to do, at the first possible opportunity!

The 5/6 schools will need an officer stationed @ the schools next. Very scary.....a handful of people have ruined our city/schools for nothing!!! Shame on them!!!

Does anyone know if there were officers stationed @ the middle schools last year?

I share your concern about the bus fumes. LPS drivers always leave the buses idling while they are waiting for kids to load.....the fumes build up, accumulate inside the bus, and reach questionable levels before the kids even board the bus.

From the State Of Michigan:

http://www.michigan.gov/mde/0,1607,7-140-6...39296--,00.html

School Bus Emissions/Idling

Michigan Department of Education
Pupil Transportation Best Practice

School Bus Emissions/Idling

School bus emissions need to be kept to a minimum for the health and safety of students and adults. In addition, limiting emissions conserves fuel and is friendly to the environment. The Michigan Department of Education, upon the recommendation of the Pupil Transportation Advisory Committee, recommends the following Best Practice be implemented by all Michigan school districts.

Recognizing that school bus exhaust emissions may be potentially harmful to the health and safety of adults and school children, school buses are to limit engine idling time to the minimum possible. Further, when buses are at a school site and waiting to load or unload students, the engine is to be immediately turned off and restarted only when ready to leave the site. Exceptions may be necessary for some special education buses operating lifts and other specialized equipment and in situations where insufficient warmth for students cannot be achieved without the vehicle engine operating.

Isn't it great that this plan exposes more children to those unhealthy emissions?

It means..........No matter what happens, no matter how bad we screw things up, no matter how bad we ruin LPS, no matter how low our property values sink, no matter what laws we break, no matter how much danger we subject the kids to......."It's OK it's normal".

I like LI
I believe it means typically at the 7/8 and 9-12 schools. That may be a question that is asked at the next BOE. Maybe they'll need to do a little searching to see how many bomb threats have occurred at those schools and when they occurred, which school years.

Yes the middle schools have Police liaisons as do the high schools. The middle school officers though split their time between two schools. That was when there were 4 middle schools; two officers split between the four middle schools.

The high schools each have their own officer.

Security I'm sure will increase as the years go on. I know mulitple and numerous cameras are at the middle and high schools inside and outside the building.
