LPS, transportation for all
Trustee Rob Freeman outlined items that could each be cut if the district wanted to replace the $1.7 million that the Legacy Initiative would save, such as preschool programs, athletics and half of the non-required busing. "These items put a picture on what that amount of money is," he said.

Remember the "PR" brochure from LPS pre-LI:

Q: What does 1% of the budget represent?

A: One percent is the equivalent of approximately $1.6 million. The plan is expected to save between $1.5 and $2.1 million. From a program perspective, $1.6 million in our budget is equivalent to any one of the following items:
ƒ¤ a reduction of 27 classroom teachers, which would cause increases in class size and elimination or reduction of elective choices in secondary schools;
ƒ¤ the elimination of all elementary and middle school library/media specialists;
ƒ¤ the elimination of the entire budget for general education paraprofessionals in all elementary and secondary schools;
ƒ¤ the elimination of the entire budget for athletic and extra curricular activities;
ƒ¤ the reduction of transportation for our general education students by one-third;
ƒ¤ the elimination of the entire budget for elementary and secondary teaching supplies, office supplies, textbooks, new & replacement equipment, library books and materials, and library on-line services.

What does a 2.8% loss in enrollment represent?

Lets put that to work.

Legacy Initiative saves 1.9 million
Legacy Initiative lost 520 students or 4.3 million
Legacy Initiative in the end loses 2.4 million or…..

30 classroom teachers….
Elimination of all school librarys….
Elimination of all Parapros
Elimination the entire athletic budget….
Reduce transportation by half…
Eliminate the entire budget for teaching supplies

Sounds like a nightmare, but this is now where we are at. Pick one…….Whats your choice? And guess what? This is not sarcasm, this is real.

Did they really end up saving 1.9 million this year when you factor in all the one-time costs?

What is REALLY gut wrenching is the fact that absolutely NOTHING that even compares to these financial and student losses would have happened if they would have taken the year to study other options. You know, the year we couldn't "afford" or "wait" to take?

I'm hoping most of the cuts they are going to be forced to make, happen at the high school level...

My kid is still in k-4. We hopefully could get out of the district by the time high school rolls around.

How about we start at the top?

I wonder just how badly we really need a "communications director".

When is the O/E going to have a real Q & A w/Liepa and the BOE?

...Asking them these very questions: Why couldn't we have waited for more research and consideration?

Let's ask Mr. Varga. I trust he has the same questions.

I'd love to see the O&E hire a cost analyst, have them prepare an unbiased report of how much the LI has truly cost this district.

They should start to recuperate the lost money by cutting the BORED of ed salaries first,
except for King & Bailey.

Next would be the Superintendent, Lieppa salary.
Then the assistants to lieppa, which I think are about four people.

That should save the district at least $800,000 or even $1,000,000. That would be about 37% of the lost $2,400,000.

This brings to mind the round-the-clock pro-LI infomercial that ran before the recall election. The one with the supporters who were so fired up over the new programs that the savings from the LI would fund. I would assume that those new, optional programs will be the first victims of the cost cutting. I'm sure the board will postpone those painful announcements until after the May elections.

Is that anything like measure twice, cut once?
