Based on everything I’ve heard on the recorded message phone calls I’ve received over the last couple of weeks, our two gubernatorial candidates are the Anti-Christ and Satan locked in a pitched battle to see who will get the opportunity to destroy Michigan. Our political campaigns in this country have seriously fallen off the deep end. The commercials are either incredibly negative or ridiculously general and fluffy. I hate how much money is being blown on these campaigns. It is absolutely nonstop on the TV, radio, and over half the time my home phone rings. I hate when they claim to support things that they have no control over in the first place. Saying they support it guarantees absolutely nothing. It tells you how they might vote on something in the unlikely even that the opportunity arises. For example, I sincerely doubt that our next governor is going to play a big part in the future of stem cell research one way or the other. It’s just a hunch. I think they’d be better off stating their positions on flying cars. At least the Big Three might be involved in that. I hate how some of these elected officials seem to disappear completely between campaigns. After all the election hype most of these people are just going to sit in a big room and vote the party line. At least when the votes don’t interfere with their fund raising and campaign schedules. I hate that politicians aren’t blocked by the Do-No-Call list. Feel free to add your frustrations but please keep it non-partisan. This thread is meant for venting, not to inflame. |

My mailbox has at least a half dozen mailers in it every day. Nice large glossy ones, that I know cost a fortune. Boy I wish we could have done half as much when we were doing the recall. Also the signs that sprout up everywhere. One day theres one the next day 10. I have had to call twice to complain I could'nt see to get out on to Newburg from my own street because of the signs. Believe me I will not vote for someone who's sign caused me to get in an accident. |

I forgot to mention email! I just got an unsolicited email from one of the campaigns. There is a big paragraph on this candidate's stance on abortion. I know this is a huge political hot button. People have very passionate views about the subject. But can someone please tell me what current or future role the Governor of Michigan will have in decisions made by the United States Supreme Court on abortion? Their stance on this issue means absolutely nothing to the governorship. They might as well tell us the rest of their likes and dislikes, turn-ons and turn-offs, favorite colors, etc. Of course that would do nothing to inflame people’s passions and get them out to the polls. Did the candidates for Secretary of State weigh in on the stem cell debate? I want to be really sure I know where they stand before I pick up my next set of license plate tabs. |

If the Supreme Court should rule that the decision regarding abortion should be determined by each individual state, than our governer's position on abortion WOULD matter. I would think it would be important to know what opinion they hold on a variety of issues: they are in a position of leadership and could have higher poitical aspirations. Governer one day, Senator or President another. If you vote for them not knowing their stance on these hot-button issues, they COULD end up in a leadership position where they are making the decisions on these matters. |

The current lack of honesty or intellectual observance is that any politico can do whatever they please, including lying about their previous positions, to garner votes. Only the voters can change this course. This is what our founding fathers had in mind when they separated Church and State. Please know that any preacher on the pulpit can risk their "non-tax" status by supporting a candidate on the pulpit or prosthelyzing. AK |
