I am truly worried for our kids.

Our kids, our community, our home values, our desireabilty as a place where families want to move to....

...everythings gone... gone... gone

Might as well change the city motto from "Families still first" to "Last one out please turn off the lights"

I have never witnessed such an inept, clueless, arrogant and deceitful administrator as Dr. LIEpa. He makes Matt Millen look like a genius !!!!!

A few new Livonia slogans:

"I'm beautiful inside"

"New low price"

"Make offer...PLEASE!!"

Hello, Kim from the City of Taylor here. Just found out today from our Superintendent that out of our 400 student loss, 207 moved out of state or out of the city, 101 went to the new Charter school and the others are a mixture of various reasons.

With the economy, I have to wonder just how many people moved out of your city and how this also may have affected the enrollment. Not sure if you could get a straight answer from your administration, not sure if I did either but this is what I was told. I find it a little hard to believe that all those people were able to sell and move. Although there are many many foreclosures nowadays?????

Thanks for the information kimmie which helps put the Taylor numbers in perspective.

Numbers like this need to be viewed very carefully though. I assume the 400 student loss means there are 400 fewer kids this year than last year. But that doesn't mean that 400 moved out and zero moved in. It might mean something like 800 moved out and 400 moved in, or 1500 moved out and 1100 moved in.

Which leads to the same question about the 207 that moved out of state or city ... what exactly does this mean? Does it mean that exactly 207 moved out, or that when the number moving out and moving in were compared, that the difference was 207? I suspect it means exactly 207 moved out and the district doesn't know or didn't report how many moved in... but I don't know that for sure.

Can you see why this makes a difference in what inferences are drawn from the numbers? If you look at the numbers one way, it seems that half the student losses are due to people moving out. But it doesn't give a true picture of the balance between students moving out and those moving in. Nor does it give a true picture of what proportion of students leaving the district left because their families moved, because kids moved to charter schools, or because of any other factor.

I raise these points because in Holland, the district frequently cited these types of "partial" statistics to detract from arguments made by people like me that the focus schools were the predominant cause of enrollment losses. I will grant them the benefit of the doubt and not accuse them of intentionally trying to mislead. It is quite likely that the administrators and board members saying these things in Holland 2 or 3 years ago sincerely believed what they were saying was true. Unfortunately, sincerity does not lead to good decisions when it is applied on behalf of incomplete information and illogical inferences.

Didn't Liepa say 12 students moved out of state?

If what someone posted in a previous thread was correct, his statement said that 12 more than in previous years moved out of state.

I highly doubt that 0 families left for out of state last year. So if that post was correct, it woudn't be 12 families total.

I think the point is that 12( or 12 more than last year) is not a significant amount when compared to this year's enrollment loss---500+.

I understand your point and agree with your post.

I was just answering the question of "didn't Liepa say 12 left for out of state?" The answer is no he didn't say that.

Garfield, you support the LI, correct? In the face of a 500 student loss and budget cuts looming, what do you think should be done? Forge ahead with the LI? lose it?

Well it was nice to see Livonia CARES disbanded (or disbanded as a PAC) now that it is over and the damage is done. I would like to see some of those same people at the podium now explaining how this is still a good idea.
