On the subject of school supplies, I could see me telling my daughter "Honey, we aren't going to buy the things on this list, your teacher will provide them for you, just go up and ask the teacher when you need something". My daughter's reply "MOM, that would be so embarrassing, I can't do that"! So, I go and buy the "suggested" supplies so as not to embarrass my kids and then they come home with homework and guess what? All their supplies are in their desk at school. I get the kids asking "Do we have any crayons?" I tell them, Yeah they are at school. I remember the days when we went to school and on the first day, the teacher would pass out your alloted pencils and reams of paper.

Hey Guys,

I hear what you're sayin'.

BUT, if the class is offered, there should be the necessary books and/or instruments to make the class WORK. If only the well-off kids can afford instruments, that is not PUBLIC SCHOOL.

PERIOD. It's not fair that only families w/cash to spend should be entitiled to band, etc.

Our music teacher in middle school begged us to buy junk or donate cash, so she could buy "instruments." HUH?

She made a BIG point of noting that 5/6 GOT instruments for their classes, but her 7/8 kids did not. WRONG!!!!!!

What is Up BOE?

I agree with Anna. I'm not feeling like I'm in a "premier" district when I have to buy everything (i.e., books, instruments).

The middle school teacher asked you to buy instruments for her class this year? She is way outta line and I wonder if the principal knows she did that?

It is my understanding that the district only provides the large expensive instruments free of charge. If your child choses to play something smaller and more popular such as trumpet, flute, or clarinet----parents must pick up the tab.

Per the State Board of Education:

Quote:

• If band or orchestra is offered as part of the curriculum and a grade and credit are given, then the school district is required to provide instruments free, on a reasonable basis, to qualified students. It does not mean that a school district must consider owning enough instruments to provide each eligible student with an instrument of his or her choice. Qualified only refers to reasonable student aptitude or ability, not availability of instrument. • Any locker fees, instrument, or uniform rental fees collected in advance should be refunded to the students. • Project materials for required or elective classes, such as shop, art, drafting, science, or home economics must be provided to the student at no charge.

Do you have the link for this information?

Is anyone planning on speaking about this issue tonight at the BOE meeting? If we don't address the issue, it will not "magically" fix itself.

Perhaps a call to Mrs. Alles at the central office would make sense. After all, she is in charge of curriculum and materials.

I do believe that they have the ability to charge for insturments to a degree, but I would not think they can charge for any books or music. This document goes into more detail about charges:

Are 6th graders being asked to rent instruments from the district under the new plan?

We're being asked to either rent or purchase an instrument, but not directly from the district. I had no idea how much this is turning out to cost! My son wants to play the saxophone. Rental on that is averaging $50/month! By the time he's done with it, we'll have paid somewhere around $400!!! It's CRAZY!
