We have just begun to fight!
|
Many many many teachers buy supplies for thier classrooms for the children. This is nothing new either, the teachers have been helping to supplement the needed materials they do not get, and spending thier own hard earned moneymaking up for something they never should have to. Many others, like ourselves, have supplied some teachers with "off list" materials for thier classrooms if they have asked and we know the need, at other times some teachers have approached the PTA's for additional materials for thier classrooms, and some PTA's do budget for those requests. Bottom line is, like the cycle of events that got us to where we are with the district, it has been that same cycle that has gotten us to a point of where the supplies, plus some books, and materials are expected to be supplied by the customer. When have you ever walked into a new car dealership and wanted to purchase "that car right there", but it was "suggested" that you would have to bring in your own wheels so you could drive it off the lot? ( hope I'm not giving any car dealerships any ideas here... there would probably be some customers showing up with a set of wheels just to make sure they could drive thier new baby home... setting a precedent that LPS has already done with thier customers )

My kids wrapped the books in cut up paper bags and then drew all over the cover. They loved it and I saved $5 per child. |

In my classroom my parents kept asking me what supplies they needed to purchase. I told them that I was reluctant to request any supplies because I had ordered enough glue sticks, pencils, pens, crayons, markers and scissors for all the kids. I did tell them that some kids like to have their own supplies because the ones I have are community supplies and must be given back to me after they are used so that everyone can benefit from them. I did put out a wish list for sanitizing wipes, kleenex and disinfectant and got a lot of them. |

In 6th grade now it is REQUIRED that each child take either vocal or band. The parents are expected to rent or purchase the equipment (25$ - 55$ per month). I understand that you could choose vocal for no charge but if you have a boy they will be probably the only male presence in choir. Add that to your school supply total. |

So really the only music special offered was vocal music? The "other" is a pay-to-play with a pretty expensive price tag. Interesting....A hidden cost of the LI, passed on to the parents... Or did we pay-to-play in days past in this district? |

The sixth graders at Johnson have to share the science books too!! About four years ago my son had a history book that was so bad I demanded a new one. After waiting three weeks The teacher told me that they didnt have any more books in stock. So I went up to the warehouse located at five and Farmington, walked into the warehouse myself and traded the book for a brand new one! The books had been sitting on a shelf in a box!!!! About 100 of them in all! I will be calling the warehouse tomorrow to see if I can personally pick up the science books that are needed at Johnson! |

Don't forget the "Initial Payment"! Read the fine print folks. The $25-$65 is the monthly fee AFTER the initial payment. I hear a very loud sucking sound coming from my wallet! |

I would just buy an instrument off of ebay. At least you have something when the class is done rather than just renting and having nothing at the end... You could even probably get your investment back if kept in good shape. I am just finding it really hard to believe they are charging for these instruments, when this was offered as some "great" program..."yes people, look at all these great specials we are giving your kids".... If I wanted to pay for music lessons, I would do it on my own. Trombone Trumpet Clarinet Flute Baritone |
