Today I was looking for information out on the LPS web site and I noticed something that I had not really thought about before. Here is a link to the November 14 presentation given by Dr. Liepa to the BOE: 11-14-05 LI Presentation. It might take a while to open for you, but be patient. On page 23 of the PDF file, you will find the K-4 Plan's anticipated savings. Anticipated Cost Savings Administrators 400,000 Secretaries 100,000 Custodians/Building Supervisors 900,000 Paraprofessionals 240,000 Professional Teaching Staff (including Media Specialists, Learning Specialists, Reading Recovery and ESAP staff) 785,000 Utilities 300,000 Subtotal 2,725,000 Costs Additional cost per bus /run 400,000 - 800,000 Annual lease cost for buses 221,000 - 441,000 Assumes 15 - 30 add. buses Subtotal for 20 buses 828,000 Net Projected Savings 1,484,000 - 2,104,000 $1,897,000 in savings using the 20 bus cost figure Look at it. Think about it. Are we really just trading all of these other jobs listed above for more buses and drivers? Only $300,000 in facilities related costs? Help me understand why we would do this????? Why not keep the buildings open??? |

Considering that this plan was sold as being the plan that saves jobs, a concept that even many of us LI-opposers have bought in to, it sure doesn't look that way to me. Looks like quite a few will lose jobs. Did anyone notice that the cost of adding specials teachers for the enhanced specials at the 5/6 schools is zero? Unless the regular classroom teachers or the librarians, secretaries, custodians and parapros they are laying off can teach instrumental music, technology or foreign language, seems to me they are planning to layoff teachers, too. Do the math. There aren't enough classrooms for all of them. Not to mention all of the teachers that will lose there jobs because many people will leave LPS entirely. Seems like to jobs saved by this plan must all be at the central office... |

I understand union leadership was at the table when this plan was being created. Are they fighting for your jobs now? They ought to be helping with the recall efforts considering how many will be out of a job due to this ill-conceived plan! Join us! |

The LEA's comment on the specials selection process: Carolyn Norris-Deyell, president of the Livonia Education Association, voiced concerns Wednesday. "What I'm hearing is we could lose our teachers and hire foreign language teachers," she said. "The idea is not to lose staff." |

We have just begun to fight!

I agree that the figures sure show that at the cost of jobs at the educational level, and at the service level, that the are being offset by the retention of jobs in the central office, as well as the additional outlay for equipment ( busses ) and the goods to run that additional equipment. Isn't there a better way to make sure we retain teachers? By retaining more classrooms and facilities ( look at the meager savings projected for closing them! ) we could have more money in the classroom and less on the roads burning fuel and expending capitol equipment. |

My 5th grade teacher at Clay was named Carolyn Norris. Carolyn, I don't know if you are the same person, but I am happy to hear you are realizing that this plan is not in the best interest of teachers or students! Teachers: It is time to speak out. Do you think that laying off Paraprofessionals, Media Specialists, Learning Specialists, Reading Recovery and ESAP staff, Secretaries, Custodians/Building Supervisors, Administrators and Classroom Teachers while spending so much more on transportation, hiring new Bus Drivers and "Specials" Teachers makes sense? Your voices should be heard! |
