Transportation Eligibility and Timeline

As a general practice, upper and lower elementary students are bussed to and from school if they live more than one mile from the school. At the elementary level, students are not expected to cross main roads such as Five Mile Road or Middlebelt Road even if the distance is less than one mile. If in the course of walking to school the elementary student would need to cross a main road, transportation will be provided.

Although it is not required, Livonia Public Schools has always provided a midday safety bus run for kindergarten students. This will continue next year. All kindergarten students will be bussed home or to school at midday regardless of the distance they live from the school as a courtesy to our families. In the morning going to school or in the afternoon coming home from school, regular bussing guidelines apply to kindergarten students.

At the middle school and high school level, students are bussed to and from school if they live more than one and one half miles from the school. Secondary students will be expected to cross all roads if they live within one and one-half miles of their school.

These general rules apply unless the Supervisor of Transportation finds the route to school to be hazardous. In that event, transportation will be provided.

There will be no additional bus transfers outside of the current system for Frost MACAT, Webster ACAT, and the parochial schools, which follows the middle school start and end times. (The District currently has a number of students in the programs listed start on one bus and transfer to another to be taken to school or home.) In addition, the current practice of separating the K-6 students from riding the bus with middle school students will continue.

A question and answer column about transportation with more information will be in the upcoming Transition News on March 22.

Timeline

Students who are eligible to receive transportation will receive a postcard in early April stating they are to be transported under the Legacy Initiative. The postcard will tell them that the exact routes will not be finalized until the summer. As is the case every year, the exact time and location of the bus stops and runs will be sent to each student eligible for transportation during the week of August 21, 2006. If students do not receive a second postcard during the week of August 21, 2006, they should call the district transportation hotline 734 744 2500 extension 42184.

Important Dates:

Preparations to Move

The moving information booklet is ready for staff and the packing process has begun. The booklet contains detailed procedures for packing and includes a timeline for moving deadlines. Schools are ordering boxes and packing materials so that staff can begin organizing their moving activities.

5-6 Upper Elementary Specials

The District Transition Team (DTT) has hosted two 5-6 Specials Focus Groups in March, one for elementary parents and one for current 5th & 6th grade teachers.

The 5-6 Specials Focus Group for parents was on Tuesday, March 14 and the 5-6 Specials Focus Group for 5th & 6th grade teachers was held on Wednesday, March 15.

The purpose of these Focus Groups was to give parents and teachers an in-depth look at the 5-6 Specials options. Administration will use input from the parents, 5th & 6th grade teachers, and the elementary principals to make a decision on the specials.

A summary of the data will be disseminated by the DTT in April. The specials decisions and a description of the upper elementary day are scheduled to be announced at the April 12 District Transition Team meeting. This information will be provided to all parents and staff in the District Transition Update on April 13.

Academic Services Department Projects

The Academic Services Department has a number of ongoing projects that are occurring.

Some of these projects include:

• The revision and standardization of elementary student class grouping cards. Student class grouping cards are information cards that are prepared by current teachers and used for placement of students in next year's classes.
• The elementary student placement process. Criteria will be identified which staff and administration will use for student placement in the merging and 5-6 upper elementary schools next year. The criteria will take into account student needs and an equitable placement of students to create emotionally safe and academically balanced classrooms.
• The school day in the 5-6 upper elementary schools. Once special area classes are determined, the details of the upper elementary school day will be finalized.
• The revision of elementary report cards. The elementary report cards will be adjusted to reflect specials classes in the upper elementary school.
• North Central Accreditation (NCA) process. Staff are meeting with North Central representatives to determine guidelines for merging school improvement plans.
• Curriculum department guidelines for materials. Guidelines are being generated for what to do with materials in closed classrooms and the district purchased resources and equipment in closing schools.

I've been asking on this forum about what Academic Services does with 16 employees under Ms. Alles. Apparently they read here. ;)

They will also bus elementary children to school if their subdivision has no sidewalks that lead to their school. I wondered if this has changed?
