Just to mention...my 5th grader (with about 5 or 6 others) helps in the office daily, collating pta newsletters, labeling, sorting and distributing much of the students' mail that comes home...this job is part of the Service Squad (which the kids LOVE, they are becoming SO responsible & are proud to do these jobs).

Now that I'm thinking of it, I've heard nothing of the fate of Service Squad jobs due to the LI...they are typically offered to 5th and 6th graders...700 kids -- that's a lot of jobs to fill...I hope this program doesn't vanish...

Anyway, are you sure the secretary meant a paid helper? Maybe they just need to have something for kids to do each day??

That sure will be alot of jobs to fill. And how are they going to pay for that??? One more new expense under the LI.

I didn't mean the kids fill hundreds of jobs at the schools...Actually what I meant was if they want to give service squad opportunity to 700 to 900 kids (or even half of that, let's say just 5th graders), at the upper els, where will they find jobs for all of the kids? I don't see how every child will get a chance to have a service squad job.

No big deal; just wanted to clarify...

The secretary's helper was a 5th or 6th grader who helps her and she delayed sorting them out so that her helper would have something to do today. It's great that the kids get to help, but she probably should have sent this note home last Friday.

Good question though on the safety and service squad...will the 4th graders be taking up those roles with the younger kids at the K-4 schools? I've also inquired repeatedly about whether the 6th graders at the 5/6 schools will still get 6th grade camp. No answers back on either.

I know what you meant...but the 5/6 do take on many responsibilities at the school. Service Squad, reading buddies, watching kids during indoor recess, helping teachers with little odd jobs, etc. Who will do this when they are gone?

And the answer is.........NO ONE!

If the teachers think they're busy now, wait until they don't have any 5/6 grade helpers, no Service Squad or safety to help in the lunchroom opening cans of fruit and stuff for the 1st graders. No help in the classroom for indoor recess. YIKES! They will be quite stressed out by the end of the day :o

You are right. Teachers need to be doing what they do best-teaching. I feel they will have many added stressors with the LI.

Not to mention that many of them still have no idea what this means to thier careers... another "yet to be determined" result of the LI, and currently in the hands of the central office! <_<
